تَذَكَّرَremembered شَجوَهits sorrow القَلبُthe heart القَريحُwounded
فَدَمعُso the tears العَينِof the eye مُنهَلٌّstreaming سَفوحُpouring freely

أَلاbehold طَرَقتكَshe visited you by night بِالبَلقاءِin al-Balqa سَلمىSalma
هُدُواًin the still of night وَالمَطِيُّwhile the mounts بِناwith us جُنوحُleaning forward
Behold, Salma visited you by night in al-Balqa,

Loitering, while my camel walked with heavy steps
فَبِتُّso I spent the night بِهاwith her قَريرَat peace العَينِof eye حَتّىuntil
تَكَلَّمَspoke ناطِقُherald الصُبحِof dawn الفَصيحُeloquent
So I spent the night with her, my eyes at peace, until
I lay awake there with teary eyes until
dawn's eloquent herald spoke.
The eloquent voice of dawn began to speak
