فيinto غِبِّthe aftermath of أَمرِthe affair of عَمودِthe pillar of الدينِthe faith لَوif وَقَعاit fell
Alas for my troops, who faltered and gave no thought
To what would follow if the pillar of faith fell.
أَلقَحتُهاI made her conceive ثُمَّthen شالَتshe raised [her tail] عاقِداًpregnant أُنُفاًnewly

I made her conceive; then she raised her tail, newly pregnant.
They did not help her calve and so find a spring-born calf beneath her;
وَلاand not اِرتَقواthey rose (reading unclear) مِنfrom صَميمِthe very essence المَحضِpure, unmixed milk آوُنَةًat times

Nor did they ever [sip] the pure, unmingled milk;
But they gather the bitter plants ṣāb and salaʿ.
ماnot كُنتُI was أَجزَعَهُمthe most fearful among them مِنof عَركِthe grinding of كَلكَلِهاher chest
حَتّىuntil تَدَرَّshe pours out نَجيعاًgore أَحمراًred دُفَعاin spurts
I was not the most fearful among them of her chest's crushing force,
Until she poured out red blood in spurts,
مِنfrom كُلِّevery لَيثٍa lion شَتيمِgrim الوَجهِthe face ذيpossessing زَبَدٍfoam
ضَرغامَةٍa fierce lion يَحذَرُdread الآسادُthe lions ماwhat صَنَعاhe did
From every grim-faced lion, foaming at the mouth:
A fierce lion whose deeds the lions dread,
غَضَنفَرٍa burly lion أَهرَتِwide الشِدقَينِat both mouth-corners قَسوَرَةٍa mighty lion
كَأَنَّهُas though he ظالِعٌlimping نَقباًfrom sore feet وَماand did not ظَلَعاhe limped
A burly lion, wide-jawed, a mighty lion,
As though he limped from sore feet, though he had no limp.
يَلقاكَhe meets you فيin اللَيلَةِthe night الظَلماءِpitch-dark مُنفَرِداًalone
كَأَنَّas though فيin رَأسِهِhis head نَجمَينِtwo stars قَدalready طَلَعاboth rose
He meets you alone in the pitch-dark night,
As though two stars had risen in his head.
