أَرانيI see myself قَدalready تَصابَيتُI indulged in youthful folly
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI had been تَناهَيتُI had desisted
I find I have indulged in youthful folly,
I find myself turning away
though I had already desisted.
Though once I was so restrained
وَلَوand if يَترُكُنيleaves me الحُبُّlove
لَقَدsurely صُمتُI fasted وَصَلَّيتُand I prayed
Were love to leave me,
If only love would let me be
I would surely fast and pray.
In silence I would have remained
إِذاwhen شِئتُI wished تَصَبَّرتُI forced myself to be patient
وَلاand not أَصبِرُI endure إِنif شيتُI wished
When I wish, I make myself patient,
When I wish, aloof I stay
yet I cannot be patient, even if I wish.
Yet I cannot help but yearn

No, by God, it cannot endure—
By God, I have no patience
the fish in the trackless desert.
For this lifelong frustration
سُلَيمىSulayma لَيسَthere is no ليfor me صَبرٌpatience
وَإِنand if رَخَّصتِyou gave permission ليto me جيتُI came
Sulayma, I have no patience;
Sulayma, I have no composure
and if you give me leave, I will come,
If you allow, I will come to you
فَقَبَّلتُكِthen I kissed you أَلفِينِtwo thousand
وَفَدَّيتُand I offered myself as ransom وَحَيَّيتُand I greeted
then kiss you two thousand times,
A thousand kisses I would give
and offer myself as your ransom and greet you.
All my love and praise imbue

Ah, how dear is a visitor who has come—
Can I profess, with such deceit
from Salma, in Beirut:
Love for Sulayma, from Beirut?

a gazelle with wide, dark eyes,
A gazelle, with darkening eyes
with neck and neck-side unblemished.
Pure brow and shining light
