قَتيرُflecks الشَيبِof gray hair وَالحلمُand sound judgment
Will you not be turned from Salma
Does my fortune mock me now?
by flecks of gray hair and sound judgment,
Once raven hair is silvered o'er,
وَأَنَّand the fact that الشَكَّdoubt مُلتَبِسٌtangled
فَلاso no وَصلٌunion وَلاand no صُرمُseparation
and by tangled doubt—
When doubt and age at once impend,
neither union nor separation?
Shall friendship soothe my spirits more?

No, by God, Lord of man-
No, by the Lord of all mankind!
kind, you suffer no wrong at our hands.
Thou shalt not in our dwellings stay.
وَكَيفَand how بِظُلمِby wronging جارِيَةٍa maiden

And how could one wrong a maiden,
Can I a gentle maid upbraid?
when from her come gentleness and compassion?
Her softness stills my soul's dismay.
