تَلَعَّبَ بِالخِلافَةِ هاشِمِيٌّ

تَلَعَّبَ بِالخِلافَةِ هاشِمِيٌّ

بِلا وَحيٍ أَتاهُ وَلا كِتابِ

بِلا وَحيٍ أَتاهُ وَلا كِتابِ

A Hashemite toyed with the caliphate,

A Hashimite played with the caliphate

Without revelation that came to him, nor any scripture.

Without any revelation or scripture coming to him

تُذَكِّرُني الحِسابَ وَلَستُ أَدري

تُذَكِّرُني الحِسابَ وَلَستُ أَدري

أَحَقّاً ما تَقولُ مِنَ الحِسابِ

أَحَقّاً ما تَقولُ مِنَ الحِسابِ

You remind me of the reckoning, yet I do not know

You remind me of judgement, though I do not know

Whether what you say about the reckoning is really true.

Whether what you say about judgement is true

فَقُل لِلَّهِ يَمنَعُني طَعامي

فَقُل لِلَّهِ يَمنَعُني طَعامي

وَقُل لِلَّهِ يَمنَعُني شَرابي

وَقُل لِلَّهِ يَمنَعُني شَرابي

So tell God to withhold my food from me,

So say to God, my food prevents me

And tell God to withhold my drink from me.

And say to God, my drink prevents me
