أَناI الوَليدُal-Walid الإِمامُthe imam مُفتَخِراًboasting
أَنعِمُI ease باليmy mind وَأَتبَعُand I pursue الغَزَلاromance
I am al-Walid, the imam, speaking proudly:
I am Al-Walid the imam, boasting
I ease my mind and pursue romance.
I enjoy my health and pursue love
أَهوىI love سُلَيمىSulayma وَهِيَwhile she تَصرِمُنيcuts me off
وَلَيسَand it is not حَقّاًright جَفاءُshunning مَنone who وَصَلاjoined in love
I love Sulayma, though she cuts me off;
I adore Sulayma though she disdains me
And it is not right to shun one who has joined in love.
It's not right that one connected should spurn
غَرّاءُradiant فَرعاءُlong-haired يُستَضاءُone is illumined بِهاby her
تَمشيshe walks الهُوَينيgently إِذاwhen مَشَتshe walked فَضُلاin a single garment
Radiant and long-haired, she is a source of light;
A doe, so graceful, giving light
She walks gently when she walks in a single garment.
The lovers walk when she steps forth
أَنقُلُI move رِجليmy foot إِلاto (apparently intended: إلى) مَجالِسهاher gatherings
وَلاand not أُباليI care مَقالَthe words مَنone who عَذَلاreproached
I turn my steps to her gatherings,
I only go where she holds her gatherings
And I care nothing for the words of those who reproach me.
And care not what the blamers say
ماnot العَيشُlife إِلّاexcept سَماعُlistening to مُحسِنَةٍa skilled songstress
وَقَهوَةٌand wine تَترُكُleaves الفَتىthe young man ثَمِلاdrunk
Life is nothing but listening to a skilled songstress,
Life is but to hear a singer
And wine that leaves a young man drunk.
And coffee that leaves the lad sated
لاnot أَرتَجيI hope for الحورَthe houris فيin الخُلودِeternity وَهَلand does...?
يَأمَلُhopes for حورَthe houris الجِنانِof Paradise مَنone who عَقَلاhas sense
I do not hope for houris in eternity—and does
I hope not for houris in eternity, nay
One with sense hope for the houris of Paradise?
Can one who reasons hope for houris?
إِذاif حَبَتكَshe grants you الوِصالَunion in love غانِيَةٌa beauty
فَجازِهاthen repay her بَذلِهاher generosity كَمَنlike one who وَصَلاjoined in love
If a beauty grants you union in love,
If she loves you, be generous when united
Then repay her generosity as one who has joined in love.
Like one who attained the wish he sought
