Your heart, O Walid, has become love-stricken,
Your heart, O Walid, has become a pillar,
a longtime lover, an avid hunter of beautiful women,
An ancient passion for singing eulogies.
مِنfrom حُبِّlove of واضِحَةِgleaming العَوارِضِthe side teeth طَفلَةٍa tender maiden

for love of a tender maiden with gleaming teeth,
For the girl with the clear features, a child
who appeared before us, heading toward the church on a feast day.
Who came out to us towards the church for Eid.
ماnot زِلتُI ceased أَرمُقُهاI watch her بِعَينَيwith the two eyes of وامِقٍa lover
حَتّىuntil بَصُرتُI caught sight بِهاof her تُقَبِّلُshe kisses عوداa piece of wood
I kept watching her with a lover's eyes,
I kept staring at her with my loving eyes
until I saw her kissing a piece of wood.
Until I saw her kiss a pole.
فَسَأَلتُso I asked رَبّيmy Lord أَنthat أَكونَI might be مَكانَهُin its place
وَأَكونَand I might be فيin لَهَبِthe flames of الجَحيمِHell وَقوداfuel
So I asked my Lord that I might take its place,
So I asked my Lord that I take his place
and be fuel in the flames of Hell.
And in hellfire be burning wood.
