وَلَقَدand indeed صِدناwe caught غَزالاًa gazelle سانِحاًcrossing our path
فَأَرَدناso we intended ذَبحَهُto slaughter it لَمّاwhen سَنَحit appeared
And indeed we caught a gazelle crossing our path,
So we meant to slaughter it when it appeared.
فَإِذاthen behold شِبهُكِyour likeness ماnot نُنكِرُهُwe deny it
حينَwhen أَزجىit cast طَرفَهُits gaze ثُمَّthen لَمَحit glanced
Then behold, your likeness—we could not deny it—
When it cast its gaze and then glanced.
فَتَرَكناهُso we let it go وَلَولاand were it not for حُبُّكُمlove for you
فَاِعلَميso know ذاكَthat لَقَدindeed كانَit would have been ذبحslaughtered
So we let it go; were it not for love of you—
Know this—it would surely have been slaughtered.
فَاِغدُso go forth in the morning فيamong الغِزلانِthe gazelles مَسروراًjoyfully وَرُحand go forth in the evening
You, O gazelle, are free and safe;
So go joyfully among the gazelles, morning and evening.
