وَلَقَد بِتُ شَجِيّاً لَم أَنَم
Whoever was free of pain slept.
Name who was free from pain
And indeed I spent the night sorrowful, without sleep.
Though I slept in distress, sleepless

بِأَكُفِّ القَومِ تَغشاني الظُلَم
I watch the star as though I were supported
I watch the stars as if leaning
By the people's hands, while darkness shrouds me.
Against the palms of people, darkness covers me

Indeed, Salma—and from love of her we have
Verily Salma's love for us
An abiding devotion in the heart as long as the acacia grows green—
Is a religion in the heart before the lote-tree turned green

She has captivated me in her spreading love
And incisors unmarred by chipping.
Whose branches trouble could not break

Judge our union, since it has been entrusted to you;
Unite me with her since you are her ally
Taking a life is no part of an arbiter's justice.
Killing the soul is not just judgment
