May God let me see you, Salma, throughout my life,
May God let me see you, O Salma, throughout my life,
and on the Day of Reckoning, just as I see you now.
and on the Day of Reckoning, just as I see you.
أَلاwill you not تَجزينَyou reward مَنone whom تَيَّمتِyou enslaved with love عُمراًfor a lifetime
وَمَنand one who لَوif تَطلُبينَyou called for him لَقَدsurely أَتاكِhe would come to you
Will you not reward one you have enthralled for a lifetime,
Will you not reward one whom you have enslaved with love for a lifetime,
one who, were you to summon him, would surely come to you?
and one who, if you called for him, would surely come to you,
وَمَنand one who إِنif مِتِّyou died ماتَhe would die وَلاand may not تَموتيyou die

One who, if you died, would die—may you never die—
and one who, if you died, would die—may you never die—
and, were his appointed end deferred, would mourn you;
and, if his allotted lifespan were prolonged, would mourn you,
وَمَنand one who لَوif قُلتِyou said مُتdie! وَأَطاقَand he could endure مَوتاًdeath

one who, if you said, “Die,” and dying lay within his power,
and one who, if you said, “Die!” and he could endure death,
would taste death then and never disobey you;
would then taste death and would not disobey you,
وَمَنand one who حَقّاًtruly لَوif اِعطِيhe were given ماwhat تَمَنّىhe wished for

and one who truly, if granted all he wished for
and one who, truly, if granted all he wished for
in all the wide earth, would choose none but you?
of the wide earth, would not pass you by?

Reward this love-mad, impassioned, tormented man,
Reward a lovesick wanderer, infatuated and tormented,
who, whenever his leg grew numb, would call your name.
who, when a foot of his grows numb, calls out to you.
