ياO مَنwho لِقَلبِfor a heart فيin الهَوىlove مُتَشَعِّبِtorn apart
يا مَن لِقَلبِ في الهَوى مُتَشَعِّبِ
بَلrather مَنwho لِقَلبٍfor a heart بِالحَبيبِby the beloved عَميدِlove-stricken
بَل مَن لِقَلبٍ بِالحَبيبِ عَميدِ
Ah, who will aid a heart torn apart by love?
O you whose heart is infatuated with love
Nay, who will aid a heart stricken by the beloved?
Rather, whose heart is devoted to the beloved
سَلمىSalma هواهُits love فَلَيسَso it does not يَذكُرُremember غَيرَهاanyone other than her
سَلمى هواهُ فَلَيسَ يَذكُرُ غَيرَها
دونَto the exclusion of الطَريفِnewly acquired wealth وَدونَand to the exclusion of كُلِّall تَليدِinherited wealth
دونَ الطَريفِ وَدونَ كُلِّ تَليدِ
Salma is its love; it remembers none but her,
My passion has overwhelmed it, so it remembers no other
To the exclusion of newly acquired wealth and all inherited riches.
Beyond the meadows and every custom
إِنَّindeed القَرابَةَkinship وَالمَوَدَّةَand affection أَلَّفاboth have brought together
إِنَّ القَرابَةَ وَالمَوَدَّةَ أَلَّفا
بَينَbetween الوَليدal-Walid وَبَينَand between بِنتِthe daughter of سَعيدِSa'id
بَينَ الوَليد وَبَينَ بِنتِ سَعيدِ
Indeed, kinship and affection have formed a bond
Indeed, kinship and affection have brought together
Between al-Walid and the daughter of Sa'id.

ياO قَلبُheart كَمhow much كَلِفَhas been enamored الفُؤادُthe heart بِغادَةٍof a tender young woman
يا قَلبُ كَم كَلِفَ الفُؤادُ بِغادَةٍ
مَمكورَةٍfull and shapely of leg رَيّاwell-fleshed العِظامِthe bones خَريدِa shy virgin
مَمكورَةٍ رَيّا العِظامِ خَريدِ
O heart, how deeply the heart has been enamored of a tender young woman,
O heart! How much has love burdened the heart with Ghadah
Her legs shapely and full, her bones well covered in flesh—a shy maiden.
