ما لِسَلمى تَجَنَّبَت
وَصلَناunion with us اليَومَtoday مالَهاwhat ails her
وَصلَنا اليَومَ مالَها
What is it with Salma? She has shunned
What ails Salma, that she has shunned
our union today—what is it with her?
Union with us today—what ails her?
كَمhow much دَلالٍcoquetry تَدَلَّلَتshe acted coyly
كَم دَلالٍ تَدَلَّلَت
وَاِحتَملناand we endured دَلالَهاher coquetry
وَاِحتَملنا دَلالَها
How very coyly she has played the coy!
How much coquetry she has shown,
And we have borne her coyness.
And we have endured her coquetry.
وَصلُunion with سَلمىSalma هُوَit is المُنىall that is wished for
وَصلُ سَلمى هُوَ المُنى
لَوif only رُزِقناwe were granted وِصالَهاunion with her
لَو رُزِقنا وِصالَها
Union with Salma is all we desire—
