O Salm, you were like a garden that had enticed,
O Salma, you were like a garden whose bounty
With its branches—its fruit near and set low—
Made greedy those who coveted it, a paradise whose place
أَربابُهاits keepers شَفَقاًout of concern عَلَيهاfor it نَومُهُمtheir sleep

تَحليلُ مَوضِعها وَلَمّا يَهجَعوا
Its keepers; anxious for it, their sleep
Whose lords watched over it with care, their sleep
Was but a brief halt upon its ground; they had not yet slumbered.
Disturbed by thoughts of its destruction, so they did not rest
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen فَسَحَbroadened الرَبيعُspring ظُنونَهُمtheir hopes
حَتّى إِذا فَسَحَ الرَبيعُ ظُنونَهُم

نَثَرَ الخَريفُ ثِمارَها فَتَصَدَّعوا
Until, when spring broadened their hopes,
Until, when spring had spread its guesses far,
Autumn scattered its fruits, and so they dispersed.
Autumn scattered its fruits, and they crumbled into dust.
