ظَبيَةٌa female gazelle أَدماءُpale, gray-tinged مِثلُlike الهِلالِthe crescent moon
She visited me by night while my companions slept—
A shy doe with friends alarmed,
A pale gazelle, like the crescent moon,
Bloody red like the crescent moon,
مِثلُlike قَرنِrim of الشَمسِthe sun لَمّاwhen تَبَدَّتit appeared
وَاِستَقَلَّتand it rose فيat رُؤوسِthe summits of الجِبالِthe mountains
Like the sun's rim when it appeared
Like the horn of the sun when it rises
And rose above the mountain peaks.
And ascends over the mountain tops.

عِندَناamong us سَلمىSalma أُلوفَfond of الحِجالِthe curtained chambers
She braves terrors to reach me, though she was
It cuts through the terrors towards me, and was
Salma, as we knew her, fond of curtained chambers.
For us a peace amongst the numerous wars.
كَمhow many أَجازَتshe crossed نَحوَناtoward us مِنof بِلادٍlands
وَحشَةٍdesolate قَتّالَةٍdeadly لِلرِّجّالِto men
How many lands she crossed toward us—
How much it has crossed towards us from lands
Desolate, deadly to men!
Wild, murderous to men.
