أَلمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنّيthat I بَينَماwhile أَناI آمِنٌsafe
يَخُبُّtrots بِيَcarrying me السِندِيُّthe Sindhi mount قَفراًbarren wilderness فَيافِياdesert expanses
Did you not see that, while I was safe,
Did you not see that while I was at peace
With the Sindhi mount carrying me at a trot through barren desert wastes,
The Sindhi betrayed me, going to a barren desert?
تَطَلَّعتُI looked up مِنfrom غَورٍa hollow فَأَبصَرتُand I saw فارِساًa horseman
فَأَوجَستُso I felt مِنهُof him خيفةًfear أَنthat يَرانِياhe might see me
I looked up from a hollow and saw a horseman,
I looked out from a cave and saw a knight
And feared that he might see me?
So I was afraid he might see me
وَلَمّاand when بَداbecame clear ليto me أَنَّماthat ... only هُوَhe فارِسٌa horseman
وَقَفتُI stood لَهُfor him حَتّىuntil أَتىhe came فَرَمانِياand he shot at me
And when it became clear to me that he was only a horseman,
And when it was clear he was but a knight
I stood awaiting him until he came and shot at me.
I stood still for him until he threw at me
رَمانيhe shot at me ثَلاثاًthree times ثُمَّthen إِنّيindeed I رَمَيتُهُI shot at him
فَرَوَّيتُso I slaked مِنهُfrom him صَعدَتيmy spear وَسِنانِياand my spearhead
He shot at me three times; then I shot at him,
He threw at me three times, then I threw at him
So I slaked my spear and spearhead with his blood.
I showed him my firmness and my spears
