    حِ فَلا تَلحَني وَلا تَلُمِ

    There is no life but with Malik ibn Abi al-Samh;

so do not reproach me or blame me.

Fair as the full moon, or like lightning flashing

    in pitch-black darkness.

One who does not disobey you if you act rightly, nor

violate Islam's rights and sacred bounds.

He partakes of a noble man's pleasure, and is not

ignorant of the verses on permission and prohibition.

Ah, many a night was ours, like the hem of a cloak,

and a day like it that did not last.

I lived in bliss then with Malik ibn Abi al-Samh,

    noble in character and disposition.
