My sorrow was stirred when the doves died out
أسالم من صرف الهوى من أسالم
I submit to the one who turns love from submitting
أبعد الخمس فوق الأربعينِ
After fifty five years
لله منزلنا على الزوراء
Our abode was in Zorah, where the winds blew
سأرحل عن بلاد ذوي النفاق
I will leave the land of the hypocrites
سفرت فهيجنا الصباح الثاني
She traveled, so the next morning we were stirred
سحرا زارني من الأنس ظبي
A magical visitor from the human race graced me,
إلى الله أشكو مصاب الورى
To God I complain of the ills of existence,
هي الظبي لولا عقدها والخلاخل
She is a gazelle, without her necklace and anklets
بشراك يا مفضال يا ذا الرفعة
Congratulations, O exalted one, O noble one,
وذي شطاط كصدر الرمح معتقلٍ
With a valley like the neck of a spear, detained
ألا بشرى على رغم الأعادي
Behold, good tidings despite the enemies!
الحمد لله المعز الخافض
Praise be to Allah, the Exalter, the Abaser
إلام أمزج صفو العيش بالكدر
Why do I mix the pureness of life with bitterness
بشراكم بسعادة وهناء
I bring you glad tidings of happiness and delight
الشوق لم تحصه الأوراق والكتب
My longing cannot be contained in papers and books
وقائل دع عنك حمل الهوى
A speaker said: "Cease carrying the burden of passion
أرى الناس في خفض من العيش راغد
I see people living in ease and comfort
وبمهجتي أفدي ظباء الكرخ من
With my passion I ransom the gazelles of Al-Karkh from
على الجيل فافرح بالمكارم وارفل
Rejoice in this generation with generosity and grace
سليمان باشا حين شيد قبة
When Suleiman Pasha built a dome
علاك علا السماكين أرتفاعا
Your loftiness towers above the highest heavens
الله أكبر زاد فيك يقيني
God is Greatest, certainty in You increased in me
يا كوثرا وصفين الجود منه غدت
O Kauthar, describing generosity, from which
حمدت نجيبا لا تشان بريبة
You were praised as an honorable man without reproach
وعائشة الخير قد عمرت
And Aisha of goodness has lived long,
لولا ابتسامك لم تبك العيون دما
Had it not been for your smile, eyes would not have shed tears
لك البشر حمدا فالورى لك تشكر
You deserve all praise from mankind, for you are always victorious.
يا ذكيا بحلمه أحنف القوم
O wise one with his dream, most upright of people
الجبن والتمر والبطيح يصحبنا
Cheese, dates, and carpets accompany us
أيها الجاهل حبي
O ignorant one, my love
يا حسن الفطنة يا نيرا
O wise and brilliant one
ولي طير أمرنه زمانا
I had a bird I'd trained for years
أحبكم فوق الذي وصفتم
I love you more than you have described
أكذا يكون جزاء صب موجد
Such is the reward of an ardent lover stirred,
لا تعذليه فإن العذل يولعه
Do not blame him, for blame inflames him
بشراك بدر قويم المجد قد طلعا
With your bright fortune the glory has risen
مزج الإله بترب هذا
God mixed with the soil of this grave many kindnesses
من لدهر عني عمي فدعاني
When time blinded me and called me
محمد خير بني آدم
Muhammad is the best of Adam's children
حنانيك أن الشيء بالشيء يذكر
Your affection, that a thing is remembered through its association
قد بنت هذا البناء المحكم العالي الرصين
She built this strong, lofty, firm edifice
خليل قلبي بحر الشوق منسرِح
My heart, Khailil, is an ocean of longing set loose
أعلى الهوان مدى الزمان مقامي
My status is the highest disgrace throughout time
ما بال شجوك ظاهر لم تخفه
Why is your yearning apparent, you do not conceal it
ورب ذات حمار دونها رجل
Many a lesser man than I
بمثل فخاري فليجئني المفاخر
With my poetry let the boastful come to me,
يا ليالي الهنا ووقت السعود
O nights of bliss and times of joy,
عرج على الكرخ وأنزل في مغانيه
I visited Karkh and stayed awhile in its taverns
لا زلت من شكري في نعمة
I still give thanks for the blessing
عذبتني بالهجر عذبتني
You tortured me with estrangement, you tortured me
يا كوثرا قد رقى في الجود مرتبة
O generous one who has risen to the highest rank of generosity
بشراك تم بفعلك الفضل
Your deeds have brought great merit
بجانب الكرخ من بغداد عن لنا
Beside the Tigris, from Baghdad he appeared to us
قالوا قعدت فلم تخرج فقلت لهم
They said, "You sit still and do not go out," so I said to them,
وما قصدتك الطير من كبد السما
The birds did not aim for you from the liver of the sky,
ألا قل لمن بالهجر أصبح ظالمي
Tell the one who tyrannized me with estrangement
خليلي إن يممتما أرض بغداد
My two friends, if you go to the land of Baghdad
يا سميري قم بالعشيرة ناد
O Samiri, go around the tribe and announce
حزمت العلم من صغر إلى أن
I pursued knowledge from a young age until
لم يعرفوا السلطان بل لم يسمعوا
They knew not the Sultan, nor even had they heard
بشرى فإن النصر وافانا
Good tidings, for victory has come to us,
يا من له قلبي أحب
O you who has my heart's love
حل قلبي تصحيف اسمك لما
My heart misspelled your name when
غيري إلى العين يصبو قلبه ولها
Others' hearts yearn for her eyes, and for her
لك البشارة فاغنم غاية الأمل
You have good tidings, so reap the utmost hope,
مولاي صبرا فإني
My Lord, have patience, for I
قل لمن قد سبى فؤادي
Tell the one who has captivated my heart
خميلة الفضل أضحت وهي باسقة
Khameelah Al-Fadl has grown tall
متى ما زرت قبر الشهم موسى
Whenever I visit the grave of the noble Musa
لنا البشرى فأهل الربع عادوا
We have good tidings, for the people of the land have returned
ولا تظنن أني غير منتبه
I'm not unaware or inattentive,
لك البشر في فخر وعز وسؤدد
For you humanity boasts honor and might loftily upheld,
عليك دلائل الأفضال لاحت
The signs of favors have appeared on you
يا أيها المفضال دمت مؤرخا
O you who are preferred, may you remain a historian
بلغ سلام محب أيها الساري
O messenger, convey loving greetings
فليلاي قد أصبحت صبيتي
My nights have become like mornings for my lover
وليلة زاد اشتياقي بها
A night when my longing for her grew
بشراك هنيت يا ذا المجد والظفر
I congratulate you, O one of glory and victory,
يا ذا المصاب توسل كلما انفدحت
O afflicted one, plead continuously whenever calamities befall you
بشير الخير إلى العراق
Harbinger of good tidings to Iraq
ما اسم له رأس يرى في السما
What name has a head seen in the sky
سلطان بيك أبا الفخار الأعظم
Sultan Bey Abu al-Fakhar the Greatest
سل السماء عن الولهان هل رقدا
Ask the sky about the infatuated one, did he sleep
للباء سر عظيم لو أبوح به
The baa has a great secret, if I divulge it
أشمس أضاءت في الحنادس أم ليلى
Is it the sun that shines in the sparrows, or is it Layla?
فلم تنفعهم الحلوى
The sweets did not benefit them,
يا من إذا الرسل عدت أنت أولها
O you who were first of messengers in creation
يا عين نلت المنى فاستبشري وسلي
سقى حي الأحبة من مراد
يا من قضى الفضل له
أمحمد الأفعال يا ذا السؤدد
إنما محبوب قلبي
كيف اصطبارك والأحباب قد بانوا
قتل المحب قد استباح بشرعه
من في العراق من الخطوب يقيني
توسل بالنبي فكل خطب
يا قطب هذا الكون غوثا فقد
عجبت لذي طرف فتنت بسحره
ذات طرف ناعس
سلام مثل زهر الروض أضحى
مر والصب كان يخفي أواره
ألا يا رجال الله غوثا ونجدة
مطالع آمالي أنرن على حالي
إليك توجهي ولديك فكري
بضة كحلاء أزرت بالغزال
طلل دارس وآخر بالي
ألا بشرى فقد حزت الصوابا
وظبية من ظباء الكرخ غانية
غيري بألحاظ الجآدز يسحر
رماح القد لا تشك
لعمرك أنت اليوم باني المناصب
سميك ذو النورين كان كصحبه
أيها الظبي شاقتي منك قرب
غبطت الطرس إذ يحظى بكف
أيها العادل عنا
إني إلى العلياء جل مقصدي
لما اتكلت على إلهك دائما
ما لذي العين لا تمل الدموعا
ما بال حبك للتجافي حامل
علام فديتك هذا الغضب
هل بعد هجر الدار تسعة أشهرٍ
