1. Why do I mix the pureness of life with bitterness
And the events of my time intertwined with my life

2. And why do I rush to drink from the spring of calamities
The cup of worries appeared easily in fate's hands

3. It's as if I and the turns of fate are watching me
A prey between the fangs and claws of the hunter

4. Who will help meaning when aid is little and disappointment
Pervades the seeker, with no protector from harm

5. Who will help me, who will support me today, after a year
That conspired against me, leaving no trace or remnant

6. I have no money, no wealth to fight against it
Except the just father, victorious and triumphant

7. Help for the crying, refuge for the seeker through him
Rain for the poor, whether female or male

8. Delight of delegations when they arrive in his courtyard
With abundant generosity, horses, and full moons

9. If a tenth of what settles in the land from his comfort
Existed, it would make him needless of traveled roads or rain

10. The blossoms of his blessings were always fresh
And the birds would sing his praises in the trees

11. His fingers exceeded the endless sea, just as
The beauty of his features is matchless

12. Time did not meet him except as a dispenser of endless
Praise, connected from the land and from settled areas

13. As if he was created to be generous
Since human nature cannot bear his gifts

14. His forefathers mastered glory and nobility
And through him they mastered the world without doubt

15. In the sheath of a star his platform is tied
As his fate was above the sun and moon

16. The Zawra lost its way when it relied on him
To protect it from misery, misfortune, and bitterness

17. From the house of Othman he became the pillar of its glory
Without him the Exalted would not have given it prominence

18. He attained the ministry as fate had decreed
Just as Moses came to his Lord at his ordained time

19. Brave hero, courageous and mighty king
In battle when he faces the enemy and in small numbers

20. In peace his way is always gentle
In wars he is harder than solid rock

21. Ask the non-Arabs and Bedouins what they faced
From his war, for they know more about this

22. How many raids he raided while night still reigned
Bringing violent death to his enemies at dawn

23. The vigorous youths delight in the ringing of swords
Or the melody of strings more than any tune or poem

24. They will never refrain from battle and strife
Until they spill the blood of enemies on the dust

25. When they face their opponents it's as if
They have the strength of an unshakable mountain

26. The sniffing of snorting steeds when they descend, O Hejaz
Fulfilling the rights of the hissing, jingling sword

27. Under armor over horses they repelled with
White and bay weapons against white and bay warriors

28. From their dwellings, rather their tongues, pours
Poetry of foes, whether composed or scattered prose

29. The faces of warriors by whom Baghdad was protected
From every evil and harmful thing

30. So it prided itself over all cities from
Egypt to the West and to the East

31. From a young age they possessed all facets of glory
And in adulthood they strengthened their grip over it

32. They surpassed all people in serving the crown of kings
The elite masters, unique pearls

33. Protectors of the land, sharp swords, sparkling blades
Whose strength in battle is more penetrating than fate

34. Protecting, observing in the house of guards
Deserving thanks for defending frontiers

35. What I have said is only a tenth of his virtues
My praise is not falsehood or fiction

36. If I tried to gather and record his traits
And devoted my lifetime to compiling them

37. Take them, O just father, from your poet
As an untamed gift I present to you

38. So let my life be the prize for praising you
Or the thirty golden dinars from you

39. As time has made me destitute and my hands are calloused
So I will wash them with your fresh golden water

40. I have a family in dire poverty
And children who if they remain in hardship will despair

41. So favor them with enough to heal their sorrow
And adorn them with gifts, for poverty is like patience

42. May the seven spheres forever envy your lofty position
As the eyes of the stars watch over you sleepless

43. And may you remain in safety and joy
While your enemies remain wary of you
