2. And lo, tremendous, grave events occurred,
Which shake pleasures and dazzle sights.

3. O Time, you have attained what you sought,
By my life, you have won the treasure of existence.

4. So is this my covenant after having been part of its throng?
What ingratitude! What has transpired?

5. How could you be so heartless?
Though it did shine radiantly.

6. And yesterday it had such strength,
As to resist importunate events, rather repel them!

7. And whence, O foe, did you gain access to him?
For lions of combat guarded him.

ูˆู‚ุฏ ุญุฑุณุชู‡ ู„ูŠูˆุซ ุงู„ุดุฑู‰

8. And whence did you espy him asleep?
While he was watched by the highest Heaven.

ูˆุจุงู„ู…ุดุฑููŠุงุช ู‚ุฏ ุณูุชู‘ุฑุง

9. And whence did the frailty of the vessel make daring?
You entered against him, though you would not make bold.

ูฉ. ูˆู…ู† ุฃูŠู† ู‚ูˆู‘ุฉ ู‡ุฏู‘ ุงู„ุทุจุงู‚
ุฏุฎู„ุชูŽ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆู„ู† ุชูุฐุนูŽุฑุง

10. So your right hand is severed for betraying
The most noble lord, the most faithful trustee.

ูกู . ูุดูู„ู‘ูŽุช ูŠู…ูŠู†ูƒ ู…ู† ุบุงุฏุฑ
ุจุฃูƒุฑู… ู…ูˆู„ู‰ู‹ ูˆู…ูŽู† ุฃูู…ู‘ูุฑุง

11. Why did you not take others in ransom?
A thousand victims, and you would not be blamed.

12. So who now remains for the widows after him?
And who for the guests and who for the neighbors?

ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ู„ุถูŠูˆู ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ู„ู‚ูุฑู‰

13. And who for the delegations and distribution of wealth?
And who for the beggar when he is needy?

ูกูฃ. ูˆู…ู† ู„ู„ูˆูููˆุฏ ูˆุจุฐู„ ุงู„ู†ู‚ูˆุฏ
ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ู„ุบู†ู‘ูŠ ุฅุฐุง ุฃุนุณุฑุง

14. And who for the swords and despite the noses?
And who will restore affairs if they are disordered?

ูกูค. ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ู„ุณูŠูˆู ูˆุฑุบู… ุงู„ุฃู†ูˆู
ูˆู…ูŽู† ูŠูˆุฑุฏ ุงู„ุฃู…ุฑ ุฅู† ุฃุตุฏุฑุง

15. And who for expenses that remove affliction?
And who for fears that come to pass?

ูกูฅ. ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ุตุฑูˆู ุชูุญูู„ู‘ูŽ ุงู„ุนู†ุงุกูŽ
ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ู…ุฎูˆู ูŠุญู„ู‘ ุงู„ุนูุฑุง

16. And who for the administration of Iraqโ€™s affairs?
And lifting discord and benefitting society?

ูกูฆ. ูˆู…ูŽู† ู„ุงู†ุชุธุงู… ุฃู…ูˆุฑ ุงู„ุนุฑุงู‚
ูˆุฑูุน ุงู„ุดู‚ุงู‚ ูˆู†ูุน ุงู„ูˆุฑู‰

17. And who to man the frontier garrisons
And guard the country and fortify the villages?

ูกูง. ูˆู…ูŽู† ุฐุง ูŠู‚ูŠู… ู„ุณุฏู‘ ุงู„ุซุบูˆุฑ
ูˆุญูุธ ุงู„ุจู„ุงุฏ ูˆุญุตู† ุงู„ู‚ุฑู‰

18. And who to spread justice among the people
And forbid tyranny and wrong?

ูˆู…ูŽู† ูŠู‚ุจุถ ุงู„ุฌูˆุฑ ูˆุงู„ู…ูู†ูƒุฑุง

19. Alas, none can match his example,
For he surpassed Aaron and Caesar!

ูˆู‚ุฏ ูุงู‚ ู‡ุงุฑูˆู† ุจู„ ู‚ูŠุตุฑุง

20. Noble in qualities, pure in ancestry,
Beautiful in traits, lofty in lineage,

ูขู . ูƒุฑูŠู… ุงู„ุดู…ุงุฆู„ ุฒุงูƒูŠ ุงู„ู†ุฌุงุฑ
ุฌู…ูŠู„ ุงู„ุฎุตุงุฆู„ ุณุงู…ูŠ ุงู„ุฐูุฑู‰

21. He is the sea running to newcomers
With waves above the ground - most glorious.

ูขูก. ู‡ูˆ ุงู„ุจูŽุญุฑ ูŠุฌุฑูŠ ุนู„ู‰ ุงู„ูˆุงูุฏูŠู†
ู…ู† ุงู„ุชุจุฑ ููˆู‚ ุงู„ุซุฑู‰ ุฃุดู‡ูุฑุง

22. So how, O grave, could you hide him?
When was it licit for the sea to be concealed?

ูขูข. ููŠุง ู‚ุจุฑู‡ ูƒูŠู ูˆุงุฑูŠุชูŽู‡
ู…ุชู‰ ุณุงุบ ู„ู„ุจูŽุญุฑ ุฃู† ูŠูุณุชูŽุฑุง

23. And how could you eclipse his brilliance
And obscure that splendid visage?

ูขูฃ. ูˆูƒูŠู ูƒุณูŽูุชูŽ ุฏุฑุงุฑูŠู‘ูŽู‡
ูˆุบูŽูŠู‘ูŽุจุชูŽ ู…ู† ุดูƒู„ู‡ู ุงู„ู†ู‘ูŽูŠู‘ุฑุง

24. His position was above the clouds,
Pacing the stars, as you can see.

ูขูค. ูˆู…ุฑูƒุฒู‡ ูƒุงู† ููˆู‚ ุงู„ุณุญุงุจ
ูŠุฌุงุฑูŠ ุงู„ู†ุฌูˆู… ุนู„ู‰ ู…ุง ุชุฑู‰

25. If they had buried him according to his merit,
It would have been fitting by a star to bury him.

ูขูฅ. ูู„ูˆ ุฏูู†ูˆู‡ ุฅู„ู‰ ู‚ูŽุฏุฑู‡ู
ู„ุญูŽู‚ู‘ูŽ ู„ุฏู‰ ุงู„ู†ุฌู… ุฃู† ูŠู‚ุจุฑุง

26. He became pure when washed according to the sunna,
Not because he needed purity.

ูขูฆ. ู†ูŽู‚ูŠู‘ูŒ ุบุฏุง ุบุณู„ู‡ ุณูู†ู‘ูŽุฉู‹
ู…ุญุจู‘ูŽุจูŽุฉู‹ ู„ุง ู„ุฃู† ูŠูŽุทู‡ูุฑูŽุง

27. Else, who soils the seas
And pollutes the vast oceans?

ูขูง. ูˆุฅู„ุงู‘ ูู…ู† ุฏูŽู…ู‘ูŽุซูŽ ุงู„ุบุงุฏูŠุงุช
ุจุดูŠุกู ูˆู…ู† ู†ูŽุฌู‘ูŽุณูŽ ุงู„ุฃุจุญุฑุง

28. His honor blanketed the Highest Company,
And the celestial ranks will not look upon him.

ูขูจ. ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุชุดูŽุญู‘ูŽุจูŽ ูˆุฌู‡ู ุงู„ุนูู„ู‰
ูˆุนูŠู† ุงู„ู…ุฑุงุชุจ ู„ู† ุชูุจุตูุฑุง

29. It is our right to rend our bosoms
In place of our garments and complain.

ูขูฉ. ููŽุญูŽู‚ู‘ูŒ ุนู„ูŠู†ุง ู†ุดู‚ู‘ู ุงู„ู‚ู„ูˆุจ
ู…ูƒุงู† ุงู„ุฌูŠูˆุจ ูˆุฃู† ู†ุถุฌุฑุง

30. For patience has become hateful,
And who can bear to be patient?

ูฃู . ูู‚ุฏ ู‚ุจุญ ุงู„ุตุจุฑ ูˆุงู„ุฅุชู‘ุณุงุก
ูˆู…ู† ุฐุง ูŠุทูŠู‚ ู„ุฃู† ูŠุตุจุฑุง

31. And O eye, be miserly with your tears,
Pour upon him crimson blood!

ูฃูก. ูˆูŠุง ุนูŠู† ุฃู† ุบุงุถ ุจุญุฑ ุงู„ุฏู…ูˆุน
ูุณุญู‘ูŠ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุฏู…ุงู‹ ุฃุญู…ุฑุง

32. And O heartโ€™s anguish, melt in sorrow!
And O heart, itโ€™s time you ruptured!

ูฃูข. ูˆูŠุง ู…ู‡ุฌุฉ ุงู„ู‚ู„ุจ ุฐูˆุจูŠ ุฃุณู‰ู‹
ูˆูŠุง ู‚ู„ุจ ู‚ุฏ ุขู† ุฃู† ุชููุทูŽุฑุง

33. And O nightโ€™s darkness, do not leave,
For dawn has been buried beneath the soil!

ูฃูฃ. ูˆูŠุง ุธู„ู…ุฉ ุงู„ู„ูŠู„ ู„ุง ุชุจุฑุญูŠ
ูู‚ุฏ ุบููŠู‘ุจูŽ ุงู„ูุฌุฑ ุชุญุช ุงู„ุซุฑู‰

34. So who will inform Jarir
And alert al-Farazdaq and al-Shanfara

ูฃูค. ูู…ู† ุฐุง ูŠุฎู‘ุจูุฑู ุนู†ูŠ ุฌุฑูŠุฑุงู‹
ูˆูŠูู†ุจูŠ ุงู„ูุฑุฒุฏู‚ ูˆุงู„ุดู†ูุฑู‰

35. That gifts of poetry are rejected in this market -
They are neither sold nor bought?

ูฃูฅ. ุจุฃู†ู‘ูŽ ุงู„ู‚ุฑูŠุถ ูˆู‡ูŠ ุณูˆู‚ู‡
ูู„ูŠุณ ูŠูุจุงุน ูˆู„ุง ูŠุดุชุฑู‰

36.
And that praise has become worthless,

ูฃูฆ. ูˆุฃู† ุงู„ู…ุฏูŠุญ ุบุฏุง ูƒุงุณุฏุงู‹
ูู„ู† ูŠูู†ุธูŽู…ูŽ ุงู„ูŠูˆู… ุฃูˆ ูŠูู†ุซูŽุฑุง

37. So today it will neither be composed nor scattered?
And that eloquence has locked its house

ูฃูง. ูˆุฃู† ุงู„ุจูŠุงู† ุนูŽููŽุช ุฏุงุฑู‡
ูˆุจุงุจูŽ ุงู„ุจู„ุงุบุฉ ู‚ุฏ ุณููƒู‘ูุฑุง

38. And the door of rhetoric has been shut?
For he who granted eloquence has died

ูฃูจ. ูู‚ุฏ ู…ุงุช ู…ู† ูƒุงู† ูŠูˆู„ูŠ ุงู„ู†ุธุงู…
ูˆูŠู‡ูˆู‰ ุงู„ู…ุฏูŠุญูŽ ูˆู„ู† ูŠุถุฌุฑุง

39. And loved praise without tiring.
He who gave discourse its order has vanished

ูฃูฉ. ูˆุบููŠูŽุจูŽ ู…ู† ูƒุงู† ูŠูˆู„ูŠ ุงู„ุจู„ูŠุบ
ู…ูƒุงู† ู…ุฏุงุฆุญู‡ ุงู„ุฌูˆู‡ุฑุง

40. And in place of his eulogies, pearls.
So arise and lament him in Tay

ูคู . ูู‚ููˆู…ุง ู„ู„ู†ุนุงู‡ ููŠ ุทูŠุฆ
ูˆุนูŽุจุณู ูˆู†ุจูƒูŠู‡ ููŠ ุญูู…ูŠุฑุง

41. And in 'Abs and let us weep for him in Himiara:
That the noble one was brother to Hatim

ูคูก. ุจุฃู†ู‘ูŽ ุงู„ูƒุฑูŠู… ุฃุฎุง ุญุงุชู…ู
ูˆุนู†ุชุฑุฉ ุงู„ุญุฑุจ ูˆุงู„ุฃุฌุณูŽุฑุง

42. And Antarah of war and boldness,
And crown of kings, father of justice -

ูคูข. ูˆุชุงุฌ ุงู„ู…ู„ูˆูƒ ุฃุจุง ุนุงุฏู„ู
ุฏุนุชู‡ ุงู„ู…ู†ูˆู† ูู„ู† ูŠูุฏุจุฑุง

43. Death called him, but he will not return.
And blissful abode called him to join it,

ูคูฃ. ูˆู†ุงุฏูŽุชู‡ ุทูˆุจู‰ ุฅู„ู‰ ูˆุตู„ู‡ุง
ูู„ุจู‘ู‰ ุงู„ู†ู‘ูุฏุง ูˆุฅู„ูŠู‡ุง ุณุฑู‰

44. So he answered the summons and set forth.
And in eternity he embraced the maidens of Paradise

45. And with favors he was indeed gladdened.
And from God he met with grace,

ูˆุฎูŠุฑ ุงู„ุฌุฒุงุก ูˆุญูุณู†ูŽ ุงู„ู‚ูุฑู‰

46. And the best reward and beautiful lodging.
Thus he came not to a palace,

ูคูฆ. ูู…ุง ุตุงุฑ ุญู‚ุงู‹ ุฅู„ู‰ ุญุถุฑุฉ
ูˆู„ุง ุญู„ ููŠู‡ุง ูˆู„ุง ุฃู‚ุจุฑุง

47. And did not dwell or was buried in it.
Rather, since the day of his birth,
