1. After fifty five years
I wish to reunite with my beloved's eyes

2. Alas! My neighbor at the foot of the hill
Blames the one who makes peace, blame me

3. When fear leaves the heart of a coward
Sleep has certainly left the eyes

4. And I have wasted the blossoms of wishes
The dark night is always my companion

5. Is there any good in the dawn that is hoped for?
To break the form of anguish lying in wait

6. As if the night were a bridled steed
With its rider at the battles of misfortune

7. Repeating its kick to further wound
And it neighs so he takes to calm

8. O bright-eyed maidens! I confess
I am infatuated with the languid-eyed one

9. And your people, O daughter of nomads, I
Have become crazy for the Turkish girl

10. I lisped so I began to indulge
In my love for her with murmuring clay

11. If not for the birthmark, she would be like a gazelle
And if not for the moles, she would be like a willow

12. So why, her arousing anklet, have you
Fallen silent and do not murmur?

13. Was your passion like mine until
You wearied of the whispers of cheeks?

14. O captive of the shackles, is there a protector
For the prisoner of chains and open desert?

15. Alas! For a spring I used to indulge
In it with gazelles, hares and ostriches

16. My youthful spirit and good state
My home and carpenter are now gone from me

17. If only his voice sounded recalling
My years though my years are gone

18. I wish for his praise but detractors
Forbid it, in these grim times

19. If only its men saw my condition
And poured out my worries in their gatherings

20. Alas! O neighbors living in Karakh
Why have you abandoned me to the missionaries?

21. After your distance, rascals estranged me
If they were honorable, they would not have abandoned me

22. And tale-bearers and backbiters said
I fear and avoid their envy of me

23. If they visit without me in my home
They have cut off the cord of connection from me

24. Yet I pardon them out of nobility and forbearance
And for fear that you would blame me if you saw them

25. They are my people though they have made me their enemy
They are my party though they do not support me

26. There is no joy in conflict between us
Though concord is with the disdainful

27. What do enemies deny of me?
My glory has settled atop the two noble hills

28. What do the poets think little of me?
For I have surpassed the age of forty

29. I have suffered in this time with every blood-price
Pride and glory toss me about, though below me

30. An ignorant fool who has never ceased to slander me
With no dignity or known lineage

31. You are permitted by him to a violation he did not protect
And he roams your inviolable honor

32. So you who intend my ruin and disgrace
And whose sole purpose is not to see me

33. I am the light by whose rising you walked
To the heights from the worldly and the religious

34. I am the protector if you are ignorant
Of the precedents of my nature, you will come to know me

35. I am the son of glory and the rising of the stars
When I don the turban, you will recognize me

36. Alas! O rider who spurs his mare
And traverses the plains with the mourning beasts

37. If you pass the left side dune north of
A hill in the valley of ignorance, to the right

38. And stop by the water-holes, then let loose
A heart its eyelids have spilled over

39. And inform my neighbor that I
Still keep the promise I made to them

40. For keeping their promise is my nature
I have made the loyalty of Abdullah my faith

41. A noble imam, a deep ocean
Lofty of purpose, fierce lion of the thickets

42. The brother of determination, whom you see
Deem every danger easy, of smooth and gentle manner

43. Whose opinions almost shine until
They suffice instead of the radiance of lamps

44. A penetrating intellect in all matters
Hits the point before its time

45. He deliberates what would weary thousands
And produces every clear guidance

46. He plunges into the sea of meanings with his mind
And brings out nothing but precious pearls

47. He captures complex issues and does not avoid
Dressing them in the garb of the commoner

48. He has ambitions greater than foundations
He has a nature of the finest character

49. A purity that was of purified water
While others were of tainted water

50. He is the son of prophets, the son of Taha
He is the son of the pious, the son of Hussein

51. O son of Muhammad! Glory is sustenance
And God has protected you from falling with the eye

52. You are the master of the summit of glory
Surpassing the glorious in every eye's view

53. To describe you as beautiful, every abode
Has a mention, in seen and in eye

54. In Iraq and every abode
And in Mother of Vegetation and Head of the Eye

55. You are, in our time, especially in
The sanctuary of Zawra, the best of every eye

56. I wish to visit your club, for I
Am happiest when I see you with my eyes

57. You have arrived, and the people of your home well,
For they are generous, the best of eyes

58. Your benevolence flows in every soul
That befriends you as the eye flows

59. And the eye of whoever opposes your elevation
And hates you has been struck by all eyes

60. You have surpassed Hatim al-Ta'i when
You connected with every newcomer with an eye

61. If the Friend had seen you before
He would have deemed his Book of the Eye worthless

62. And every group that befriended you
Even if they were the pupils of the best eye

63. You are generous with what you see valuable even if it is precious
And you grant whom you wish with every eye
