1. Your affection, that a thing is remembered through its association
So do not wonder, O fair one, that I have become sad

2. I saw at Al-‘Ashshār’s a little girl
Like my Zamzam, her face changed

3. So when she saw me coming over my room
With my advanced age, she started to stumble

4. Out of fear of me yet in her heart was her love
A gracious one whose heart cannot forget

5. So the heart’s passion was provoked, disturbs its calm
And rivers streamed from the eyes to the face

6. Zamzam, I have not forgotten you an hour
Of time, am I of concern to your heart?

7. Zamzam, if you have forgotten me
For play, then I will remember your aloofness

8. Zamzam, if I saw all my tribe
I am their father, I do not forget and belittle

9. If the play of fate made you forget your father
I do not forget even if I am buried

10. Would I forget your weeping when you left one evening
Over me? This memory splits the heart

11. We will both pass away, but you are vulnerable
Weakness comes not to you, to trouble you

12. And from my passion and burning for you
I have become frail, maybe invisible

13. You forgot the Roman coins, how I sought
Them for you, nor was miserly toward you

14. Each day you got a Roman quarter
Your hands breaking and buying your freedom

15. I traveled dangerous seas you knew
Bringing your emancipation, not boasting

16. My heart’s daughter, that was no favor
Upon you, but to remind you I did

17. Why didn’t you stay, daughter of the soul, with us?
Your food mixed with milk and sugar

18. I have the hilal wheat, mighty is its dough
Syrian burghul, bigger in volume

19. And I have, my daughter, much clove
And plants not found in Egypt, memorable

20. And I have wondrous sweetmeats
And I have fabrics from India preferred

21. All that has passed is stored for you
If you come, I will bring that and more

22. Do not give ‘Ā’isha a grain of mustard
Or safety, all is reserved with you
