1. Praise be to Allah, the Exalter, the Abaser
When the pious slept in humble dwellings

2. The Believer, the All-Powerful, the Veiler
And the Omnipotent King, the Vanquisher

3. I praise Him while free of all
That a servant praises for the blessings he bestowed

4. He who saved us from all evil
And from the oppression of His Might that spread

5. Then infinite peace and blessings
Upon the one whom I highly praised

6. Whose gifts made him blessed
By his Lord, and victorious in his youth

7. When serious matters loomed
And the horns of calamities gathered

8. Muhammad, of noble traits and loyalty
And his family of perfected honor

9. And his companions whom His favor distinguished
In prose and authentic poetry

10. They strove to champion God's religion
And defended it without doubt

11. At the Battle of the Trench when foes besieged
See how many they left in distress

12. While he was tried with every affliction
His heart frightened, plans few

13. How they protected and manned the outposts
Until the religion remained supported

14. They stayed up through the night in garrisons
Until the dawn broke from the darkness

15. Their excellence spread in order
Their status soared over both near and far

16. Among all people no companion
Was worthier of virtue than the Siddiq

17. His superiority to the first caliph
Distinguished like the best father

18. Similarly Al-Farooq, the brave
The just, eloquent, and able

19. His favor surpassed his peers
His deeds have passed as praised

20. If you seek gain, O youth
Always put them first

21. Also the Possessor of Two Lights and benevolence
The pure-hearted, collector of the Quran

22. And every word carefully composed
Like the pure-hearted, beautiful externally

23. He has the greatest right, my friend
As his tongue's favor has declared

24. Similarly the Prophet's cousin
The valiant, firm, our Master Ali

25. I state at Ohod he felled
The unbelievers like the son of Ubayd, Al-Wadee

26. So be prejudiced against no other
Appraise him highly and beautifully

27. Similarly the remainder of the companions and kin
The people of certainty and marksmanship

28. Their excellence is supreme
In confirmed accounts and clear command

29. As long as Islam remains supported
Throughout the ages and times

30. After abundant greetings
Upon the noble, vigilant, insightful

31. The most eloquent of his time
More articulate than Qays and Suhban

32. I long to meet him
And wish to see him

33. Until his virtues became manifest
Beyond the describers' enumeration

34. One said, "Hearing praise is better, my friend
Than seeing, O Suwaydi."

35. I said, "What do you mean, and his merits
Are verified to me, thus he spoke."

36. I have ended praising him in detail
Only briefly conveying what was transmitted of him

37. O excellent one, O elevated
Embodying all favors and precedence

38. What is this delightful
And pleasant Arabic ode?

39. It almost surpasses Al-Awfee's thousand lines
Eclipsing the poetry of eloquent Arabs

40. And the prose of the literary
Without extra words or terse phrasing

41. Every carefully selected word
Contains a perfect statement

42. And it comprises rhetorical aims
While including grammatical meanings

43. It is therefore unparalleled in its superiority
Worthy to be written in gold

44. You mentioned the Battle of the Trench
It accurately depicts it without doubt

45. You spoke truthfully
Which I know to be correct

46. Yes, the transgressing armies came upon you
And the tyrannical factions resolved against you

47. They entered your towns with ill intent
And captured the women under your protection

48. They left no latecomer or early vanguard
No weak or strong

49. They besieged you
And directed their arrows at you

50. They were embroiled and cunning
Launching shafts in multitudes

51. Then they approached seeking victory
At the most pressing and dire hour

52. While you stood firmer than mountains
Stationed atop the walls

53. Your chieftain urged you in the garrison
"O son of my mother, O son of my uncle, there is no escape"

54. So you rose like angry lions
By God, you are like she-lions protecting their cubs

55. The smashing of skulls against skulls persisted
And every defiant unbeliever attacked

56. The battle raged under its lords
While you knew it best

57. You felled the unbelievers with bright swords
And polished lethal blades

58. You removed the helmets from the bodies
Of the enemies in the arena of battle

59. In a hall where blood flowed
Like springs before their eyes

60. A dreadful, dusty melee
Its ground and sky the color of carnage

By God, you were granted victory

62. So all harm was removed from you
The enemies fled from you in escape

63. Without gaining any ground
The King's sorrow intensified

64. While he remained hidden on the elephant
Earlier in wars he was indeed

65. Victorious, though undeservedly
But now the religious and noblest

66. Opposed him, so he came to his senses
The treacherous villain

67. The immoral combatant, the unjust aggressor
Thought he would overcome by power and might

68. And seize the land up to Mosul
Enslave women and children

69. And kill men and youths
His hopes failed throughout time

70. It only led him to loss
O foreign barbarians

71. Transgressors, scoundrels, be fair!
Are you like the Ottoman's sons?

72. Or know war and spears?
Such that you refuse their challenge

73. To battle and duel in the fray?
Your scorpion stung the viper

74. The chicks arrogantly challenged the hen
The people of Mosul the Humped

75. Brought you utter ruin
Most of you dwell in holes

76. Wretched, while few of you suffer
How if legions came upon you

77. Like mountains and bastions
As if they were lions emerging for spoils

78. Whose army on battle days cannot be defeated
Those who on days of war

79. Spilled seas of red blood
God granted them victory

80. And protected them from all evil
Rejoice, you have obtained from your Lord

81. A reward for this deed you have done
You protected Islam with Islam

82. Nay, with spearheads and swords
You shielded your honor from harm

83. So it remained untouched by filth
With spears and polished blades

84. You guarded the throat of a maiden or spirited youth
May God reward you and your town

85. Your chief Abu Murad, your bold one
How he made the enemies drink the cup of death

86. When they approached you without stealth
Neither seditions nor calamities frightened him

87. Rather, he persistently endured hardship
Similarly his minister, the perfect

88. Lethal lion, valiant hero
They joined in protection and guarding

89. And seriousness, discretion and politics
They continue to strive

90. Lowering the foe with resolve
Serious in guarding the lovely slave-girls

91. With every polished and sharp sword
They are only like a fierce lion

92. Protecting its cubs from all
They still stand against spears

93. With the brown spear, strong-toothed
And burning muskets

94. And shining, splitting swords
Until the fray intensified and spread

95. Shouting "For God!" attacking on both flanks
They turned to the battlefield while the enemies

96. Fled when blood was spilled
I distinguished them with merit and praise

97. While joining others with kinship
You mentioned their superiority, O keen-eyed one

98. Though you did not cite the famed
Congratulations, your aftermath is praised

99. And your misfortunes have been dispelled from you
Boast for eternity

100. Over all cities and lands
Except over us, O people of valor

101. Do not boast in this profession
For you were taught by us

102. We opened this door for you
No doubt in this and no uncertainty

103. And some people may be specifically mentioned
When this door was with a different people

104. Do not grieve at the boasting, nay, at all traits
For complete merit is due to precedence

105. Our steadfastness on the greatest siege day
Did you see its like in eras?

106. When the enemy surrounded the city
And bricks besieged us, thundering

107. We repelled them with spears
And bricks defended our eminence

108. Their bricks and projectiles did not cease
Breaking our enemies, every hero

109. Each day we are in combat
With two horsemen or footmen

110. We were in the melee below the dust
With Heraclius’ and Alexander's resolve

111. We were in this most difficult siege
Guarding the wall for seven months

112. Provisions ran out and most died
Of hunger, yet we did not weaken or tire

113. We ran out of two handfuls of rice
And some honey and dates

114. So we fed our horses, camels
Donkeys and mules with it

115. As for the lesser siege, we saw in it
Every discord, yet no weakness or waning

116. Rather, ever guarding the wall
How can we fear the enemies' snarls?

117. When we have the valiant, resourceful one
And the generous man among us

118. How can we fear their flock if it approached
And the Prophet's follower is with us?

119. How much can we boast to the enemies?
We are only followers of Ahmad

120. Your steadfastness in this great siege
And your war against all the tribes

121. Is the way of the best minister, Ahmad
And every clan emulated his traits

122. Your boldness in this deed, the good deed
Observed the proper sequence, so it was deemed good

123. Ahmad's deeds in what he instituted
In every case he was most conforming

124. He surpassed every king and minister
In good conduct and management

125. Therefore the Sultan heeded his merit
And entrusted him with everything

126. He chose what the son of Hassan chose
Ahmad of singular acts in the age

127. Be it peace or war as duty required
And he was originally selected for both

128. He embodied three traits not found
In others, so he was unique in them

129. The sword, management, and nobility
The three necessitate a binding decree

130. So be devoted to him, singularly
Praise and gather others, yet single him out

131. If you wish to enumerate prey with good traits
Noble lineage and generosity

132. Then start by mentioning the favored King
And put the most intimate first in order

133. He who risked himself to protect us
And opposed all who showed enmity to us

134. He who guarded us from harm
Prevailed over the enemies, grasping

135. So hear of his feats, proven to you
And what is narrated of his manner toward his Lord He assaulted his enemies like a massive mountain

136. And his right hand held the swords
On the day of battle with the Persian king

137. How many heroes he destroyed and broke!
It cannot be fathomed, from what is reported

138. How much he has in verse and prose on battle!
How often he made them drink the cup of death and calamity!

139. When he came upon them thundering
Like the best saying, "Ahmad is with you"

140. When he entered the fray like a planted mountain,
The King fled and took cover behind his horse

141. Everyone escaped without hesitation
Like Al-Fadl, Al-Harith and Al-Nu'man

142. How many invasions of rebels did he conquer!
How often did he defeat the transgressor with a patrol!

143. He emulated his father in battle and nobility
One who resembles his father is not unjust

144. Baghdad flourished when it felt secure through him
While other cities envied it

145. If you want a description of this Imam
From these lines and prose,

146. A tenth of his merit I have not attained
Though many attributes have been stated

147. But I wanted to make truth from me dependent on wisdom
Not fully disclosing the blessings

148. For every king and prey compared to him
Are like the mob and few contrary to what I presented

149. Or for certain people remain protected
Throughout time from every resentful weakling

150. Then infinite prayers and peace
Upon the noblest Prophet

151. Muhammad, blessed with tranquility
And all who were present in Medina

152. Their followers successively
And the composer of this ode

153. Seeking the reward of the Benevolent King
The worshipper, son of Suwaydi

154. When the cavalry stood for the struggle
To champion the religion of God in contest
