I swear by God, I am fit for buffoonery
ولما التقينا قرب الشوق جهده
When we met, yearning intensified its efforts
خبروني اليوم أني في غد
They told me today that tomorrow
يا آسي الحي هل فتشت في كبدي
Oh stricken with passion, have you searched in my core
إن الذي أبقيت في مهجتي
What you left in my heart,
لكسرة من رغيف خبز
A crumb of bread
قالت الأشغال لما
My work is done when you are through
سعيد أهلا وسهلا
Welcome, happiness
لا القوم قومي ولا الأعوان أعواني
My people are not my people, nor are supporters my supporters
إذا سيق تبر إلى مسمع
When pure amber is brought to the ear
نحن لله ما لحي بقاء
We belong to God, and to Him is the final return
سابا اتق الله وخل الأسى
Fear Allah and remove sorrow
أداعي الأسى في مصر ويحك داعيا
Roaming in Egypt, I mourn my sorrows
أناعي ماهر لم تدر ماذا
I lament, O skilled one, you knew not what
قم أدر يا خليل شعرك فينا
Rise, O Khaleel, and let your poetry flow through us
الحلو لما انعطف
When beauty leaned
محبك في هنا وسرور
My beloved is here, and joy
في عابدين سلطان
In Abdeen, a splendid sultan,
أصبحت في حيرة وهم
I am in confusion and worry,
يا بنت روما لا تكوني كما
O daughter of Rome, be not like
يا أيذا الفيصل المزجى زواجره
O Faisal, when his anger is aroused
شمس المعالي كعقود الجمان
The sun of glories like necklaces of pearls
ما أعجب النيل ما أبهى شمائله
How lovely is the Nile, how charming are its banks,
وافاك يا زينة الدنيا وبهجتها
I met you, O beauty of the world and its joy
قد ألفت عصب اللصوص
The gang of thieves have appointed judges in every division
قلت لنجل الصافعين احترز
I said to the son of warriors, "Beware
تزود من الأقمار قبل أفولها
He gathered provisions from the moons before their setting
إن هيم الشعراء الثغر والريق
If poets were enthralled by the lips and mouth
أبى الجهل إلا أن يهز أريكة
Ignorance insisted on shaking a throne
عش للعلا مولى وذخرا
Live for the Most High as a master and treasure
أي صوت حيته بالأمس باريس
What voice did I greet yesterday, O Paris
نح كأس الغرام إني سقيت
Pour me a cup of love, for I have been
أمطري يا سماء في كل يوم
Rain, O sky, every day
تبسمت عن جوهر العقد
Smiled from the essence of the necklace
أستفغر الله من عصر تكنفني
I seek Allah's forgiveness from an era that surrounded me
أخلق بمثلك أن يفوز برتبة
It suits the likes of you to gain high rank
يا لواء الحسن أحزاب الهوى
O banner of beauty, the factions of passion
سفرت فلاح لنا هلال سعود
The crescent of Saud* journeyed happiness to us,
العيد عاد بما تشاء بشيرا
The feast has returned with whatever you wish, harbinger
الفضل أصبح زائلا في إثر من
Virtue has faded away after one
يا راحة القلب يا شغل الفؤاد صلى
O comfort of my heart, O preoccupation of my soul be blessed
أين سابا أين سابا يا ترى
Where is Saba, where is Saba, I wonder
قلت يا صالح ارم دل
I said, "O Saleh, throw a bucket,
أين صبري من يذكر اليوم صبري
Where is my patience now, who remembers my patience
توفيق مصر العام وافى سعده
The year has brought Egypt good fortune and happiness
مولاي وافاك عام مشرق بهج
My Master, a year dawns bright and joyous
هل بالخيرات عام مشرق
A year of blessings dawns
زكي يا صفوة أبناء العرب
O excellent one, cream of the Arabs’ sons
يا غرة العام جوزي الأفق صاعدة
O first blossom of the year, soar to the horizon
يا آل مراكش وفد الغناء أتى
O people of Marrakesh, the convoy of song has come
فؤادي كما شاءت لحاظ غزالي
My heart is wounded as my gazelle-eyed beloved desired
أصلب أنت قل لي حار أمري
You are unyielding, tell me I'm confused
أقصر فؤادي فما الذكرى بنافعة
My heart, be brief, for reminiscence is useless,
يا حاجبا عن عيوني طيف صورته
O one who veils from my eyes the image of his form
بالله يمم يا نسيم الصبا
By Allah, O passing breeze of the morn
أبثك مابي فإن ترحمي
I confide in you what grieves me, so have mercy
أبرق يتوج هام الربا
Lightning crowns the heights of the hills
إن بناء الخزان أنهكني
Building the reservoir exhausted me
ديوان أوقاف مصر نادي
O my longing for Egypt’s Waqf Bureau’s director
أبعدوا أحمدا وجاءوا بثان
They banished Ahmed and brought another
أهلا بسعد وسهلا
Welcome, O wise philosopher
بعض هذا الجفاء والعدوان
Some of this estrangement and hostility
خشيتك حتى قيل إني لم أثق
I feared You until it was said that I did not trust
ألا يا تجار العصر هل فيكم امرؤ
O merchants of the age, is there among you
حي الأهله في الأعلام
The people celebrate you in the media,
معشر القبط يا بني مصر في السر
O Copts, O sons of Egypt, in secret
إنني أستغفر الله لكم
I ask Allah's forgiveness for you
أطلع الكاس كوكبا في ازدهاء
Raise the goblet like a disdainful star
خلي صدودك وهجرك
Let go of your rejection and abandonment of me
ألا من لمقروح الجوانح ساهر
O who keeps vigil for the wounded at heart
أي غصن في الروض هز نسيم
Which branch in the garden did a breeze shake,
يا وامض البرق كم نبهت من شجن
O lightning that flashes, how many yearnings have you awakened
إن ما بت تشتكي منه داء
The illness of which you complain
أشوقي لقد نلت ما تشتهي
My longing, you have attained what you desire
يا راميا من تحت أج
O you who casts stones beneath the shade of Providence, who do you shade?
يا صريع الأكف صدغك أمسى
O slain one with calloused palms, your temple
كلامكما إن كان مثل سهام
Your words, if they are like arrows
مولاي قد وافى حماك مهنئا
My lord, your protector has come to congratulate you
يا دواة اجعلي مدادك وردا
O inkpot, make your ink into roses
مولاي إن الزمان صاف
My Lord, time is clear
أجل أنا من أرضاك خلا موافيا
Yes, I am the one who pleases you when I am obedient
مولاي في مثل هذا اليوم قد قرنت
My Master, on a day like this hopes were linked

The fox saw the raven on a branch of a flowering tree,
ألا فاعذروني إن قنعت من الورى
Excuse me if I'm satisfied with the glory I've gained
يا مصر سيري على آثارهم وقفي
O Egypt, follow in their footsteps and stop
أسست هذا على أس التقى
She built this upon the foundation of piety
الوصل نسّاني العتاب وكان كتير
Reunion made me forget reproach though it was much
تعالى الله لا يعل
Come, God's essence none can tell
يا فتاة الحي قد أذكرتنا
O girl of the lively one, you have reminded us
أيها الناطقون بالضاد هذا
O speakers of the emphatic dhad, this is
يا ظبية من ظباء الأنس راتعة
O gazelle of companionship's gazelles wandering
إذا فتح العداة عليك حربا
When your enemies wage war against you
أمطري يا سحائب الفضل ما شئ
Rain down favors, O clouds, as much as you wish,
يا مقر الغزال قد صح عندي اليوم
O dweller of the gazelle, truly with me it was made evident
لهف الرياسات على راحل
The zeal for leadership on a noble steed
خبري القوم يا سمية إسكن
Tell the people, O Sameya, resident
إذا كان ورد الموت ضربة لازب
If death's stroke is the doom of the unprepared,
غاض ماء الحياء من كل وجه
The waters of modesty have receded from every face,
لا والهوى العذري والوجد
No, not by longing or passion or sorrow,
لا تكلني إلى الحوادث وانهض
Do not abandon me to misfortune, and arise
يا من أقام إذ تملكه
O you who stood steadfast amidst the ardors of longing and grief
أدك أمير الأغصان
You lead the branches
كم تهيم كم تجب
How often you rave, how often you become confused,
إذا كنت يا زين زين الأدب
If you, O ornament of literature,
يا سرحة بجوار الماء ناضرة
بعلاك يختال الزمان تبخترا
لو أن أطلال المنازل تنطق
ملأت زوايا البيت بنت محمد
روحي على دور بعض الحي حائمة
يا موردا كنت أغنى ما أكون به
أميرة الغانيات أهلا
لم يدر طعم العيش شببان
إنا إذا سلبت وظائفنا
أين شكور هل العلياء
عباس طبت منابتا ومناقبا
يا رب أين ترى تقام جهنم
أنا يا إلهي عند بابك واقف
أغرتك الغراء أم طلعة البدر
طاب الزمان وهذي مصر قد شربت
لك ألفاظ إذا احتجت إلى
يا أميرا عليه من رونق المل
يا خير مولى بندى كفه
شوق يهيجه نواك

إن سئمت الحياة فارجع إلى الأرض
مقابر من ماتوا مواطن راحة
يا موت هأنذا فخذ
إن الليالي من أخلافها الكدر
هي الدنيا وإن جادت بخيله
وهبتك يا دهر من تطلب
يا مالىء العين نورا والفؤاد هوى
عز الكرام وشاطرهم رزيتهم
أَيصيخ لي الملك الهمام قليلا
لهف سارى الدجى لقد أفل البد
في ظل أهداب عيونك وود خدك آل
