ألا رب طاه جاءنا بعد فترة
Oh ardent soul that visited us after absence
لي كل حين من أحباي حين
Every moment I have with my loved ones is a moment
يا مالكا ما برحت كفه
O generous friend whose hand
قولا لطغريل ولا تقصرا
Tell Tughril, do not be remiss -
لي حبيب قده قدد
I have a lover as tall as a palm tree
ليت شعري إلى متى أنا في الشعر
I wish I knew for how long I'll be in poetry
يا ابن الرماح والظبا
Son of spears and gazelles
ومهفهف خطراته خطر
His charming gestures are full of charm,
ذر المقام إذا ما ساءك الطلب
Leave the place if seeking there brings you distress,
قلب المحب إلى الأحباب مقلوب
The lover's heart is overturned towards the beloved
خرف الخريف وأنت في شغل
Autumn has passed and you were busy
لقد حسنت به اليوم المراثي
You have composed fine elegies today
كتبت إليكم أشكو سقاما
I wrote to you complaining of illness,
قال وحيش لي في منزلي
Wuhaysh said to me in my house
في آمد السوداء بيض ما انثنوا
In the dark night's bosom there is a whiteness that never grows dim
لصوص الشام توبوا من ذنوب
Robbers of Damascus, repent from your sins
إلى ابن بران وابن رزيك مقصدي
To Ibn Buran and Ibn Ruzzik is my aim
قلت لحسادك زيدوا في الحسد
I said to your enviers, increase in envy
أقسمت يا لائمي فيمن بليت به
I swear, O blamer, by the one I've been afflicted with,
وحسبة نالها شريف
A noble man attained glory
دب العذار بخده فتعذرا
The sadness showed on his cheek, so we excused him
لا تلمني على الدموع الجواري
Blame me not for shedding tears of sorrow,
قلت وقد أقبلت بخال
I said, as she approached with a mole,
وهل هم يوما شيركوه بجلق
Never once did Sherkoh desire
يا حابس الكأس خيل الورد قد وردت
O withholder of the cup, the horses of roses have arrived
أأحداق بيض أم حديقة نرجس
White narcissus or white eyes
بكى لي حاسدي مينا وأدري
My envious rival shed crocodile tears for me
نتفت السواد من العارضين
I plucked the blackness from my temples
إلى كم أبيد البيد في طلب الغنى
How long shall I annihilate myself seeking wealth,
لي حبيب يزيد في كل يوم
I have a lover who grows dearer day by day
يا أحسن العالمين أفعالا
O the best of both worlds in deed
إن كنت بالأسمر الزيني معتنيا
If you cherish the one with the glossy dark locks
قل لصلاح الدين رب الندى
Tell Salah ad-Din, Lord of the dew,
زد علوا في المجد يا ابن علي
Rise higher in glory, O son of Ali
قد أقبل المنثور يا سيدي
My scattered prose has arrived to you, my master
جفاني صديقي حين أصبحت معدما
My friend abandoned me when I became destitute
قالوا حبيبك مبذول فقلت لهم
They said your lover is unfaithful, so I told them
لله أسد من بني الأفرنج
Roaring for God, a lion from the Franks

O swordsman arise
كأن الخال في الخد اليمين
As if the mole on the right cheek
كأن الخال في الخد الشمال
As if the beauty mark on the left cheek
لنا طبيب شاعر أشتر
We have a doctor who is a poet I bought
وكيف يراني الرقباء
How can the watchers see in me
جنب عن الدنيا إذا جنبت
Turn away from this world when it turns
خليلي جودا بطيف الكرى
My two friends, be generous with the phantom of memories
أما ترى البدر في السماء وقد
Don't you see the moon in the sky, how
ما اجتمع الشطرنج في مجلس
The chessboard and backgammon gathered no assembly
عج على عباس تلق فتى
Wonder at Abbas who met a youth
لمن الخيل كل أرض تجوب
For whom are all lands crossed by horses,
حي في الحي من قباب المصلى
Live in Al-Hayy from the domes of Al-Musalla
صلاح الدين قد أصلحت دنيا
Salah al-Din, you have set right the world
يا خفيفا على القلوب لطيفا
O gentle one, soothing to hearts
سلا هل سلا عن ربة الخال واللمى
Is there any news of the keeper of cheeks and beauty spots?
على بابكم يا آل رزيك شاعر
At your door O family of Ruzzik, there is a poet
ليل طويل وجفون قصار
A long night and short eyelids
أرى الصبر عن نجد أمر من الصبر
Patience from Najd is more bitter than patience itself
ومحبوبة في القيظ لم تخل من يد
A beloved in the heat who's never without a friend
أقول والأتراك قد أزمعت
I say, and the Turks have intended
لا ترقدن وابن ثريا معا
Do not sleep, O son of Thurayya, with
أبا الوحش جملت أهل الأدب
O father of the desert, you have beautified the people of literature
ضد اسمه المنقذي عن ثقة
His name belies the savior of trust
قومي اسمعي يا هذه وتأملي
Arise, and listen, O maiden, and contemplate,
لا بارك الرحمن في وحيش
The Most Merciful did not bless Wuhaysh
سليمان ميمون النقيبة حازم
Suleiman is fortunate, the leader is resolute
أي هلال كسفا
What crescent moon has been eclipsed,
عندي إليكم من الأشواق والبرحا
I have such longing and nightly sorrow for you
صفات القويضي فتى مشرق
The qualities of Al-Qawīshī, a shining young man
لحا الله ملكا يحتويه ابن مالك
A king has been killed by the son of Malik
يا طالب الصوري إن لم تتب
O seeker of aestheticism, if you don't repent
تقول خراطيم لما أتيت
The hoses say when I arrive
دمشق حييت من حي ومن نادي
Damascus, I greet you from one alive and calling
تضاحك الروض لما أن بكى المطر
The garden smiled when the rain wept
يا مخجل البدر كلما طلعا
O you who outshines the full moon whenever it rises
قالوا بدا في خده الشعر
They said the down was sprouting on his cheek
ويلاه على المفهف المياس
The willow sways on the praying land
جاءت بوجه معرض
She came with an averted face
علي صوته سوط
Ali's voice is a whip
كحل بعينيه أم ضرب من الكحل
Is it kohl in his eyes or a type of kohl?
ومهفهف ناديته لما بدا
When he appeared, radiant in his beauty, smiling,
كثر الخئون وقلت الإخوان
The traitors increased, and friends grew few,
دع استماعك ذكرى دير سمعان
Leave off listening to memories of the monastery of Simeon,
تأمل ولتكن ثبت الجنان
Contemplate, and let your soul be steadfast,
أعاذل كيف ينساني حبيب
How can a lover forget me
إذا ما الأمرد المصقول جاءت
When the polished sword's edge grows blunt
يا بدر دجى يحمله غصن أراك
O full moon, gloom carried by a twig I see you on
كنت أذم ابن مالك فإذا
I used to blame the son of Malik, but then
ما اجتمع الشطرنج في مجلس
Neither chess nor backgammon players gathered
كأن احمرار الخد ممن أحبه
As if the redness of the cheek were from one I love
أقبل يهتز في غلائله
He came swaying in his robes,
يا داخل الحمام هنئتها
O you who entered the bath congratulating it
أحن إلى نجد وإن هبت الصبا
I yearn for Najd though the north winds blow,
شغفتني على كبر
The sun and moon's heat enchanted me in old age,
وصل الكتاب عدمت عشر أنامل
The book arrived with ten fingers
قف بجيرون أو بباب البريد
Stand at Gerona or at the post office door,
يا صاح قد صاح الحمام وغردا
O friend, the doves have cooed and warbled,
من لي بساق أغيد
Who will lend me a slender leg
لمن حلة ما بين بصرى وصرخد
For whom is an outfit between Basra and Sarakh?
هذا هو الزمن البديع المونق
This is the wondrous time, so utterly sublime,
قالوا هويت رفيعا نيرا حسنا
They said, "You have aspired high, bright, handsome."
لقد فاز بالملك العقيم خليفة
The barren one has won the kingdom,
كتم الهوى فوشت عليه دموعه
He concealed his love, so his tears flowed over him,
تضاعف ضعفي بعد بعد الحبائب
My weakness has doubled since the absence of loved ones
يا غربة جعلت فؤادي للأسى
O loneliness, you have made my heart accustomed to grief
يا معشر الناس حالي بينكم عجب
O people, my state among you is wondrous
يقولون لم أرخصت شعرك في الورى
They ask me why I cheapened my poetry among the people,
هذا الحبيب وهذه الصهباء
This beloved and this dawn,
بروق الغوادي أم بروق المباسم
Are they the lightnings of the valleys or the lightnings of the smiling mouths?
حاجتي شقة تشق على كل
My need is an arduous one, burdening
ميلو إلى الدار من ذات اللمى ميلوا
Yearn for the abode from the one with soft hands, yearn
إلى كم لا يفارقني الفراق
How long will parting not leave me
ومدرسة سيدرس كل شيء
A school where everything will be taught
وفي الشيب لي واعظ لو عقلت
In my gray hair there is an admonisher, had I but understood,
نديمي دا بالخمر الخمارا
My boon companion, pass round the wine,
ما فتح النور إلا أشرق النور
Whenever light has opened, light has shone bright
نديمي قم فقد صفت العقار
My friend, arise, for the stars have set,
أما آن للغضبان أن يتعطفا
Is it not time for the angry one to show sympathy?
عذلوني في الحب والعذل يغوي
They blamed me for love, though blame does seduce,
في كل يوم رحلة ومقام
Each day a journey and an abode
أدر يا طلعة البدر
Shine upon us, O rising moon,
أصبح الملك بعد آل علي
The kingdom after Ali's house
أما لي على الأحباب يا سعد مسعد
Is there no relief for me from those I love, O Sa'd, most fortunate?
ومهفهف كالرمح يحمل مثله
Like a spear carrier, another spear wielder,
الحمد لله السميع المجيب
بأبي قد يعيش بأبي
عبرت على دار الصلاح وقد خلت
قلت وقد أقبل ياقوت
أنا سرج لمليك
قد أصبح الطائي في جلق
أمر من عسرة ومن دين
كأن الخال في الخد الشمال
يا من إذا جئته سئولا
قد جن شيخي أبو نزار
سرى جلدي حين سار الحبيب
سلا هل سلا أو هل تقلب قلبه
حتى متى لا يبرح التبريح
لله شبلا أسد خادر
ناولني من أحب نرجسة
عرج على نجد لعلك منجدي
إلام ألام فيك وكم أعادى
شكا إلي أمرد
يا راكب البكر بين الشيح والغار
أعاذلتي قومي انظرى قد بدا البدر
قوموا انظروا واعذروا يا غافلين إلى
قل للصلاح معيني عند إعساري
إليك صلاح الدين مولاي أشتكي
عسى من ديار الظاعنين بشير
كأن السماء وقد أزهرت
قال قوم بدا عذار وهيب
طاف على الندمان بالكاس
قالوا يسبك طغريل وتهمله
أحبابنا خنتم عهودي وما
ترى عند من أحببته لا عدمته
وعلق تعلقته بعد ما
حبيب لنا واعد مخلف
يا أبا الفضل بالنجف
عج بالعقيق وعد عن تصحيفه
صد الحبيب وذاك دون فراقه
وصاحب يتلقاني لحاجته
رحلت من الشقيف إلى الغراق
تعلمت منك الغصون
وصال ما إليه من وصول
تقول صفية والصفو منها
رصع الشيب لمتي يا خليلي
تناءوا بعد قربهم ملالا
قلب وقلبي لأسهم المقل
رويدكم يا لصوص الشآم
ما كلام الوشاة إلا كلام
