1. At your door O family of Ruzzik, there is a poet
Content with your friendship and greeting
١. عَلى بابِكُم يا آلَ رُزّيكَ شاعِرٌ
قَنوعٌ كَفاهُ مِنكُمُ الوِدُّ وَالبِشرُ
2. Yet the gatekeeper turned him away in ignorance of his face
As he once turned away Amr in his poverty
٢. وَقَد رَدَّهُ البَوّابُ جَهلاً بِوَجهِهِ
كَما رَدَّها يَوماً بِسَوأَتِهِ عَمرو
3. I longed for you until when I drew near
You kept your distance and there was but a handspan between us
٣. تَمَنيتُكُم حَتّى إِذا ما قَرَبتُمُ
بَعُدتُم وَما بَيني وَبَينَكُم شِبرُ
4. And dawn welcoming me were yearning for me
How Strange then that Badr spurned my company
٤. وَقَد كانَ مُشتاقاً إِلَيَّ طَلائِعٌ
فَوا عَجَباً لِمَ قَد أَبى صُحبَتي بَدرُ
5. Even Husain, the master of my doctrine
Turned his face from me as if I were Shimr
٥. وَحَتّى حُسَينٌ وَهُوَ سَيِّدُ مَذهَبي
زَوى وَجهَهُ عَنّي كَأَنَّنِيَ الشِمرُ
6. And time increased over me the stinginess of Muhammad
Even though he is an ocean in every fingertip
٦. وَزادَ عَلَيَّ الدَهرُ بُخلَ مُحَمَّدٍ
عَلى أَنَّهُ في كُلِّ أُنمُلَةٍ بَحرُ
7. Not all are swordsmen in the fray like Al-Husam
Nor all lands in their majesty like Egypt
٧. وَما كُلُّ ماضٍ كَالحُسامِ لَدى الوَغى
وَلا كُلُّ مِصرٍ في جَلالَتِها مِصرُ
8. But honor parted from them, spurning
One to whom straw and gold were equal
٨. وَلَكِنَّ عِزَ الدينِ قَد نابَ عَنهُم
فَتىً قَد تَساوى عِندَهُ التِبنُ وَالتِبرُ
