بقية عمر حر مد فيها
Roses are red, violets are blue
تواضع تكن مما يشينك سالما
Be humble lest pride should disgrace you
إذا هبت صبا الأسحار يوما
When morning breezes blow
يسمو بخلق ولسان حلا
With noble character and eloquent tongue
قالوا لشاعرك الذي
They said to your poet who
كل الأمور لم تزل
All matters have yet to cease
ملكت من القنع كنز الغنى
I have attained through contentment the treasure of wealth,
إذا لم ألق في أمري شفيعا
If I find no intercessor for my affair,
لعمرك ما طال الوقوف على الحمى
By your life, we did not linger long on the ruins
أذهب نقد العمر حتى انحنى
He spent his life until he bent down
قد انحنى الشيخ لعظم الذي
The old man bent from the weight
ميعادك الفارغ إن ساعده
Your empty promise, if their saying aids it
لما رأى القلب أهوال الزمان وما
When the heart saw the calamities of time and found
أير ككلب الدار لما جنى
Like a home's guard dog when it goes astray
لقد ذب الذباب فليس يعلو
The flies have died, so he does not ascend
بغى على لئيم دون سابقة
He attacked a wicked man without precedent
يقول من أهواه دعني وتب
The one I love said leave me be
رئيس تشفع بي سيد
Plead for me, my lord, with the Healer
أيا قمرا زانت طوالع حسنه
O moon that graced the horizons with its beauty
لزناة الأنام حد ورجم
For the adulterers of mankind there is flogging and stoning
يتبادلان بلا ربا إذ أحكما
They exchange without interest when they strengthen
ومولع بالدب كي
A thief obsessed with parrots
مذ هجرتم هجر الطيق ولي
Since my leaving you, sleep has deserted me
لا تظنن ذا حياة مقيما
Think not that any living man abides,
توق السؤال إذا ما حججت
I see the blue sky above me
لما رأيت الوزير بالدنيا
When I saw the minister possessing
أيا شقيق الروض حياه الحيا
O companion of the garden, greetings give life
قدر الله أن أعيش فريدا
God destined that I live unique
قد كساني حلة هذا الضنا
This cloak of grief has fully clothed me,
ولا خير في ملك بغير مدبر
No good is there in kingdom without a wise ruler
يروغ في مشية ثعلب
A fox slinks with a sly gait
مذ فتحت أبواب نادي العلى
Since the doors of the exalted club opened
ما أقصر الليل الذي
How brief was the night when
رأيتك طودا قد لجأت لظله
I saw you as a towering form to which I fled for shade
قلت لم تشتري الغلام كبيرا
I asked, "Why did you buy an older slave,
أملي مذ سعى لطرق المعالي
My hope since it strove for the paths of glory
أتى الحبيب بوجه جل خالقه
The beloved came with a face whose Creator adorned it
وطوفان ليل مذ طفا فيه موجه
Since a night storm whose waves were raging
أيغلب من له الأملاك جند
Can one who owns the kingdoms be defeated by an army
ومولى أمطرت كفاه غيثا
And one who rains blessings from his palms
أصبحت في خلف كجلد أجرب
I have become like tanned leather, patched,
عذار خط في الوجنات خطا
A cheek has etched a line in the cheeks
جيوش مالها في الملك نفع
Waves of soldiers serve no purpose
إذا شرب الدخان فلا تلمنا
Roses of hope, if smoke is inhaled, do not blame us
وظبي من السمور ألبس فروة
A gazelle clad in sable fur
تملك حبات القلوب لأجل ذا
He captured the hearts' affection for the sake of that one
وقالوا حلت بئر بريق محمد
A well grew sweet by Muhammad's saliva.
لوالدي طه مقام علا
My parents have a high station
بمس أقدام النبي قد حوت
With the prophet's blessed steps enclosed
مدح بوجه كدية
In praise of Kudayah's face
لا يكذب العاقل ما
The wise man does not lie when
إذا رمت أمرا فكن طالبا
If you desire a matter, then be
غطت بساعد كماء يجري
Covered by a sleeve like running water
كم همة عالية
How many lofty aspirations
نثير الياسمين من فوق بدر
Scattering jasmine above the full moon
لله ما ألطفه من زامر
How lovely a flute player for God
ولو لم يكن ذابحا للكرى
Even if he were not a slayer of cares
فديت ديارا للأحبة لم تزل
I ransom the homes of my loved ones that have remained
من يزن في حلم يكن جزاؤه
Whoever commits adultery in a dream,
من صحب الدهر طول عمره
He who companions time throughout his life
إنما أشتهي لقاء حبيب
I long for a meeting with my beloved
إذا كنت في بلدة لم ترد
If you're in a town you hadn't meant
إن لم يكن بين القلوب تجاوز
Roses are red, violets are blue
قد كان لي خل على
I once had a friend
آه واشوقاه مت أسى
Ah, longing - how I pine!
كلا جانبي هرشي طريق لسالك
On either side of Harsha is a road for the traveler
قل لرقيب قد أتى لصبية
Tell the guard who came to a young girl,
العين تود في جميع الأزمان
The eyes throughout all times
الخلق سفر والزمان مراحل
Creation is a journey, and time strides in stages
وإذا ما كنت يوما مخطئا
If you were wrong one day,
قالوا لي اصبر لفادح الأحزان
They told me: "Be patient with the deepest sorrows,
أيسنا من هدى الهادي
We despaired of the guidance of the guide,
ما يطلب المرء بغير حاجة
What one seeks without need
ولى الشباب حميدا حين ورثني
Youth has departed, leaving me glory and poetry to match the splendor of ink,
حسدت كتابي حين لاقى أحبتي
I envied my book when it met my loved ones
كم أناس من الكرام تولوا
How many noble souls lived well
قد قلت إذ حسدوا وما
I have said when they envied, yet in life, when they envied, affluence
زارنا الورد في أسر زمان
The rose visited us in happiest time
البيع بالنقد خير
Cash sale is best,
ومن يقعد على طرق القوافي
Whoever sits on the paths of poetry
قد خاب من كان في مناه
Disappointed is he who spent his youth
وكم فتية نجيت من نار فتنة
How many youths have I saved from fiery trials
أغلق الجفن حين زار خيال
I close my eyelids when your phantom came
يسرني شتمك إذ كنت قد
Your insults please me, for it means
كم من كريم قد باب في دعة
How many a generous man has fallen into misery
فجعلت عيني تحت أخمص رجله
So I placed my eyes beneath the sole of his foot
شيخ بسعد وبنحس له
An old man of Sa'd and good omen,
أرى عز غير الله للذل صائرا
I see the glory of all save God fade,
صرف اللحاظ عن الوشاه
He turned his gaze from joyfulness
قالوا فلان قدر في بزوجة
They said so-and-so married a wife
كم قهقه الإبريق إذ قيل تاب
How the jug laughed when told to repent,
وبحيرة بفنائها سمروا
And by a lake in its courtyard they conversed
لي سيد متواضع لغلامه
I have my master so very meek to his boy
لئن نكس الدهر حظي فلي
Though fortune turns its back, in time's recess
دهر سوء فيه ارتفاع لئيم
An era of evil in which a villain rises
قلت للندمان لما
I said to the remorseful ones when
قد مشت نحوه على فرد ساق
She walked towards him on one foot
ومباحث في العلم من نفر
Discussing sciences, a group
دعوتك يا خليلي للحضور
I called you, my friend, to come
يا صاح والشوق استعر
O companion! Passion reignited
وكم ناس بموت أصولهم قد
How many people through their ancestors’ deaths
المد بعد الجزر قالوا إنه
The tide after ebb, they said it comes
طه كملت صفاته والخلق
Taha, his qualities were perfected, and his character,
لا أطمع اليوم وقد أصبحت
I have no more hopes or desires today
فديتك إن النفس تأنف أن ترى
I swear by your life, the soul disdains to see
أن يعد وبغي عليك فحله
Should he transgress and seek to oppress you
العرف قرض لمن تذكو مروءته
Custom is a loan to him who remembers his valor,
قالوا نراك سقطت من رتب
They said, "We see you have fallen from your rank,
من أكرم مرسل عظيم جلا
From the most noble of messengers, great and majestic,
يا حبذا ناد لنا
O what joy a companion who calls us
ويوم غدأ باردا جوه
And a day that dawned with coldness in its air
ناضر الورد قيل من عرق المختار
The rose's blossom, it is said, from the perspiration of the beloved appears
قيل في اسم السلام رقية راق
It is said that in the name of peace there is a soothing charm
معلومي المعلوم يا سيدي
My knowledge, O my Master,
نيران فارس انطفت لما بدت
When prophethood's good tidings shone clear
قيل لا تنظرت لوجه مليح
It was said, "Do not gaze upon a beautiful face,
أتى يوم بدر وهو بدر تحفه
The day of Badr came, and it was a full moon surrounded
قل للأحبة أنتم مذ غبتم
Tell the beloved ones, since you've been gone
فرائد تزهو في ترائب مدحه
Glorious poems flourish in the garments of his praise,
وليلة زارني والسعد وافى
And a night visited me, happiness arrived
في بكائي راحة من شجني
In my tears there is respite from my sorrow,
وصفت خصره الذي
They described his waist which
فالجذع حن وأن من جزع
The trunk has bent, for it mourned the separation from Taha
يا خلب البرق الذي
O lightning bolt that
وسفر منى جازت بعزمي ومالها
With determination, I crossed the bridge of my journey's purpose,
وباسل نار عزمه تقد
With embers of fire his resolve is ignited
سرق المنام بطرفه الفتان
The dream stole with its flirtatious glance,
روض المنى أيدي الأماني به
The garden of wishes, my dreams wander in it,
إذا ما غاب من أهواه عني
When my beloved is absent from me
ظننت الصبا لما على النهر قد جرت
I thought the morning breeze, when it flowed along the river,
أصبحت من يبصرني طرفه
I have become one whose glance
قالوا جهنم دار الخلد ساكنها
They said Hell is the abode of eternity, its inhabitant
وزان بحب الزنا مغرم
With passionate love for fornication obsessed
غاب الحبيب وفؤادي خافق
The beloved is gone, and my heart flutters
سكان مصر كالنيل ما عرفوا
The people of Egypt are like the Nile, unaware
لحديث النبي بعد كلام الله
The Prophet's words, after the speech of God, are good
يا صاح توق من فوات الفرص
O friend, beware of missing opportunities,
كتب الربيع على طروس رياضه
Spring wrote on the pages of its gardens
شجاع إذا قام في معرك
When a brave man enters into battle
بجوده تغرق الآمال حين ترى
With his generosity hopes drown when you see
ما نعمة تخلو من الحسد الذي
No blessing is free from envy's taint
لعمري لم أبد البكاء لذلة
Never have I wept from being abased,
يطيب عيش المرء في حيه
Pleasant is the life of a man among his own people
أرسل إذا أرسلت خلا حاذقا
If you send a messenger, send a wise one,
كل الورى صائد ولكن
All the world's a trapper
دار الأنام صغيرهم وكبيرهم
The home of people, their elders and youngsters
مولى إذا ما جئت أبوابه
When his doors are approached, he whose
أتارك قلبي في لظى الوجد مجمرا
My heart I leave aflame with love and longing
إن رضا المرء على نفسه
A man's self-satisfaction
إن نصحت الصديق فانصحه سرا
If you advise a friend, then advise him secretly,
ربما كان سارقان على المال
Perhaps there were two thieves in the wealth
يا من سقى من حنظل عسلا
O you who took honey from bitter aloes
سهام جفونه أعرضن عني
The arrows of his eyelids turned away from me
قل لمن في الخير أبدى جهده
Tell those who strive for good -
لا تصحبن إلا امرءا عاقلا
Keep company only with a wise man
إذا جاد للقوم رب الطعام
When the Provider nourishes the people with food,
إن لم يكن في منزل مؤنس
If there is no one in the house to talk to
من يتبع رأي الأماني
Whoever follows fanciful opinions
أفئدة الخلق على حكمه
Hearts of all people are under His rule
للروض أتى حبيب قلبي العاني
To the garden came the lover of my aching heart
أتدري السواقي ما تقول وقد غدت
Do you know what the water-wheels say as they turn around,
شق منه صدر فأخرج منه
A chest was cleft, from it emerged
لازمنا فدم ثقيل فهل
We needed heavy blood so is there
قبل يد الخيرة أهل التقى
Greet the hands of the virtuous people
تسبيح علق زاره لائط
The praise of a wretched visitor,
أيها السائلي عن النوم إني
O you who ask about sleep, I
قيل لا جهد بلاء نازل
It is said there is no affliction like
مذ زار من أهواه في روضة
Since you visit whom I love in a garden
رعى الله عصرا غاب عني عواذلي
God bless a time that passed me by when my friends were near
استغفر الله ما لي بالورى شغل
I beseech forgiveness from God, I have no business in this world,
قيامة قامت بموت الذي
The rising that rose with the death of him
إذا ما اتسع الخرق
When the tear widens,
يقولون إن المد في أثر الجزر
They say the tide follows the ebb,
وخدن يروق الطرف وضاح وجهه
His gaze is so bright and cheerful,
إني إذا ما الهم وافى إلى
When worries come upon me
رأى في طريق الرشد شبت بهامتي
I saw the path of righteousness where my ambitions ignited
ما سليمى ما هند ما أسماء
Neither Sulayma nor Hind nor Asma'
ذؤابة قد اشتفت
A keyhole gaping wide
خير السلاح ما وقى
The best weapon is what protects,
أوصاف مولانا سقت
The descriptions of our Master quenched
أمولاي كم من دعاء إلى
How much imploring to You I called,
إن الصديق من إذا دعوته
When you call a friend, he comes running
غزال نقدت له طاعتي
A gazelle whom I gave my obedience
يا حابس الكأس في يديه
O cup bearer, holding the cup in your hand
قد رأينا الملوك إن سار جيش
We have seen kings, when an army marched,
قالوا الزمان غدا قصيرا هل مضت
They say time has grown short, have its blessings passed
قصتي قد أتت إماما هماما
My story has come before an honorable judge
ويمنعني تقبيل خديه أنني
His cheeks I long to kiss, but I refrain-
إن غاب من أهوى فلي مسامر
If the one I love is absent, I have
صقيل خدوده مرآت قلبي
His cheeks polish the mirror of my heart
سقى الله روضا قد نعمنا بظله
God watered a garden, whose shade we enjoyed,
خد الربيع من الحياء توردا
The cheek of spring blushed red
إذا لحت قالت عيون الورى
When you appeared the eyes of creation said
أقول للهو والصهباء قد منعت
I say to frivolity and youthfulness you have denied
دار البرية إن ترد
If you seek glory in this vain life
زاد خط العذار في الخد حسنا
The line of blame on my cheek brought beauty,
هاتيك يا صاح ربا لعلع
Come, my friend, let's go!
ومولى له بالمرد قلب مولع
A passionate heart that loves fervently
على وجه من أحببت أبصرت نرجسا
On the face of the one I loved, I saw a narcissus
يعلي مقام المرء خفة ظله
A man's status is raised by his forgiving nature
مولاي شكرا لفرج قد رقيت به
My Lord, I thank you for the relief you have granted
أتيتك يا مولاي أبغي زيارة
I have come to you, my Master, seeking a visit
حسن لباس الفتى يدل على
The youth's fine garb bespeaks
ناديت وقد هجرتم يا ليلى
I called when you had deserted, O Leyla
خليلي مرا بي على طيبة التي
My friend, take me past Ta'if where the choicest,
في دولة وصل منيتي والهجر
In the state of my union and separation
رحم الله صاحبا لي أهدى
May God have mercy on a friend of mine who showed
ما زلزلة لها سقوط الإيوان
No quake like the fall of the palace hall
لما بدا في صدغه خاله
When his beauty mark appeared on his cheek
فتى كان من قبل الشباب مؤاجرا
A youth who once fought viciously in his prime
وساحر المنطق أظهر الطلا
The magician of logic revealed the gleam
لعمرك ما قلب النبي غفا ولا
By your life! The Prophet's heart has never slept,
إنما هذه الحياة منام
This life is but a slumber
مذ أطنب بالمطال والأيجاز
Since he was eloquent in prose and concise in verse
مذ رأى النهر برقه سل سيفا
Since the river saw his lightning flash, it unsheathed a sword
يا ليتني ثان لحاد حداك
Oh, if only I were a second to one who called you,
لحى الله أياما تعادي أولي النهى
God has prolonged days that oppose the virtuous
قبلت مصطحبا شفاه لا كؤس
I kissed the lips of a cup-bearer
مسيل الصبح طم على الكواكب
The morning star spilt over the planets
قامت تجر ذيول التيه والجدل
She rose, dragging the trains of wandering and contention,
صمموا آراءهم على الفتك فيه
They were determined to destroy him
رواة حديث المصطفى قد دعا لهم
The bearers of the Chosen One's traditions prayed for them
رأيتك تعطينا الهبات كتارك
I saw you giving us gifts like one who has
تنازع فيه الشوق قلبي وناظري
My longing heart and eyes contested over it
لرسول الإله أعلى مقام
The messenger of God has the highest station
قلت لما عذبوه فغدا
When they tortured him, so the next morn he was
قصرت مدائحي والقصر مني
My praises fall short, though the fault is mine,
يا سخرة الشيخ بلا أجره
O ridicule of a Sheikh without payment,
روضة جادها الحيا بلآل
وسارق يسرق شعر الورى
لأشعار مصر بالتواري سخافة
فتح الورد في الرياض صباحا
قالوا المنام لم يزل
أرى كل ذي عيب ونقص لقد علا
ما فتح الورد بنان الندى
تغافل إذا رمت ود الورى
إن يكن أخلق الشباب ورثت
أيها السائلي عن ابن فلان
قد ضمه البحر في لج مخافة أن
لا وغصن راق للطرف ورق
خبأتك في العين خوف الوشاة
من كان في الدهر له مكسب
فرش الربيع لنا خمائل سندس
محا الله أقطارا من الجود أمحلت
كل الورى جرد سلوقية
من يبغ طول العمر لم يضجر بما
كم ناصح وصف الطريق لمدلج
لا تكن ممسكا حباب رجاء
بلحوم الأنام من يتغذى
من أكرم مرسل عظيم جلا
من يترك الدنيا يسد أهلها
يقول على رأس الشريف علامة
يقولون لي لم تبق للصلح موضعا
كن لما لا ترجو أشد رجاء
صبرت لخطب زمان دهاني
لم أنس إذ أهدى النسيم تحية
إذا غبت يا شمس المكارم والندى
مدحته يوما فنلت الغنى
ما جر لظل أحمد أذيال
منزل ضيق ولا حسن فيه
كل من قصر عما
أيها النافخ يبغي أنه
لسان كل عاقل في قلبه
إذا رمت إكسير نصر فقم
يكبرون إذا خاضوا بحور ردى
أمضى وأعنى في اللقاء لقيته
على النهر درع من نسيم حبابه
أهون بسيد فتية نال الغنى
سبح الحبيب ببركة
وبلدة سكانها في لظى
كم جئته بحاجة
إذا شاب شعر المرء قل سروره
كم من قريب كيلا لي شره
رقى الفقر اسمه يدعوه داع
لوالدي طه مقام علا
أخوك الذي أن جئته لملمة
أيها اللائم دعني واسترح
رعى الله عوادا إذا زار ناديا
كفى ناظرا للعبد أن عدوه
من لا له حبيب
من يهد للناس ثمار الغنى
من أفضل التصدقات برا
من ينتسب إلى العظيم عظما
لعمرك جبهة خير الورى
قدحت رعود البرق زندا
أرح طرف عين جفاها الهجوع
سهام جفونه أعرضن عني
يا يوسف الحسن الذي لم يزل
لله أيام الصبا والهوى
لنا مجلس فيه من اللهو مطرب
بت أرعى النجوم والإلف راقد
مذ سباني بدر بقلبي مقيم
مولاي داري والذي قد حوت
بنور المعاني أشرق اللفظ فاكتسى
زمان السوء إن وافى بريب
مررت على ربع الأحبة دارسا
يشتكي الخصر ردفه كل حين
قال لي الأير لا أهنيك إن
قد تستوي في الحركات الورى
على خده مذ لاح نبت عذاره
كن ابن وقت حاضر تجني هنا
أنا أصبو والتصابي حلية
إلى الله أشكو الزمان الذي
قد كنت في كنف الخمول منعما
بكر الندامى للصبوح ونبهوا
وحقكم مديحي في علاكم
رق مسكي حلة فوق جسم
تعلق قلبي في الغرام بصدغه
وقوم لئام ليس لي فيهم رضا
قيل فلان يدعي كرما
وسحاب فيه برق
قد شبت وعمر صبوتي عن طوقي
من تحت همزة صدغه ألف
هذه الدنيا ممر
لعيد الزمان وعرس الفلك
لقد قيل إن الكبر والعجب محنة
لعمرك نعل المصطفى بركاتها
وساق في السرور غداً طبيبا
