- تزود من الدنيا فإنك راحلTake provision from this world, for you are departing;
- تستر ناسوتي بناسوت أهبهMy human nature is clothed in a human nature I bestowed
- تقاطر مني الدمع حتى تجففتTears dripped from me until I dried out.
- تلألأ وجه الدهر واتصلت عرTime's face glittered, and its bonds were
- تنوّر همة الأحيا في الأحشاThe aspiration of the living glows in the innermost depths.
- ثوى الحب واستعلى وما قد رثى لياLove settled in and rose supreme, yet showed me no pity.
- جفن العليل غدا بالدمع في غلسThe sufferer's eyelid grew tearful in the predawn gloom.
- جلسنا لدى الأغصان في يوم أنسناWe sat beside the boughs on a day of our shared joy.
- حدثني صبح دياجي الخندسThe dawn of pitch-black nights told me,
- حط الرحال بروض الأنس والأربSet down your baggage in the garden of companionship and desire.

- صوادج البان ولنا هجرها باديThe songbirds [uncertain reading] of the bān trees—their desertion is plain to us.
- طريقتنا قطع العلائق والخطوOur path is severing attachments and the step,
- طفنا بكعبة حسن قد ألفنا بهاWe circled a Kaaba of beauty, where we had befriended
- ظبي خزّ بلحاظهA gazelle has pierced me with his glances
- عتابكم حلو وغيظكمYour reproach is sweet, and your anger
- عج ساحل الدير سل عنها الشماميساTurn aside to the monastery’s shore; ask the deacons about her.
- عجبا لمن قد علا من عنصرMarvel at the one who has risen from an element,
- عرج أخي بحمى ليل لتخبرنيTurn aside, my brother, at night's sanctuary to tell me,
- عرج أخي حمى ليلى ومنعرجTurn aside, my brother, to Layla's sanctuary and a winding bend.
- عرج بمنعرج الكثيب الأخضدTurn aside at the bend of the soft dune,
- عرج على باب الغريب ونادىTurn aside to the stranger's door and call out,
- علمت بأنك سهم كليلI learned that you are a blunt arrow,
- غين بين المحو قد بانA veil has appeared amid effacement,
- فاء الفقير فكاكه من أسرهThe fāʾ in faqīr is his release from captivity;
- فاح عرف المسك من عرف الخزامThe scent of musk wafted from lavender's fragrance.
- فاشهدوا أني غلامSo bear witness that I am a servant
- فتنت بشمس الحسن لما تسترتI was captivated by the sun of beauty when she veiled herself
- فقل للشامتين بنا أفيقواRouse the gloaters about us and say:
- فلو عشت يوما كنت أحسب بعدهSo, were I to live a day, I would count after it
- فلولا قيود البين كنت عبيد باWere it not for separation’s bonds, I would be a humble servant at the door—
- فنحن شراب مذ حللن بقيعةSo we are a drink, ever since they settled on a bare plain—
- فؤادي قد براه البين لماMy heart has been afflicted with separation when
- فيا رب هذا الدهر قد جار حكمهO Lord, the unjust rule of fate
- فيا عجبا فرع يتمم أصلهOh, what a wonder: a branch completes its root!
- فيض بجمع الجمع صار حديثهAn outpouring: in the union of union its discourse came to be
- قد تيممت بالصعيد زماناI performed dry ablution with earth for a time,
- قلها كلنا عالم بأن فيناSay it: we all know that within us
- كبرت همّة عينيMy eye’s ambition grew;
- كتبت إلى سري بسطر من الهوىI inscribed, my God, my secret in a line of love;
- كتبت لقاضي العشق سطرا من الهوىI wrote to love's judge a line of passion,
- كم كنت في غمرات الحب أستبقHow often I raced ahead in the engulfing depths of love!
- لا يستوي معرب فينا ودرّ حسنAn eloquent speaker among us and a beautiful pearl are not alike.
- لاح لي برق بنجد فسباLightning flashed for me in Najd and took captive
- لقد ظهرت فلا تخفى على أحدYou have indeed appeared, so you are hidden from no one,
- لقد كان في مجللي البطون وما حوىIn my majestic innards and what they contained
- لقد كنا رنقا قبل فتق وجودناIndeed, we were turbid before our existence was cleft open.
- لما تبدت ديمية في ساعةWhen a piece of dimity appeared one moment,
- لما يرى حبها فؤاديWhen my heart beholds her love,
- لو تداني الدهر وانقاد ولمIf time drew near and yielded, without
- لي بالعقيق مليحة أودعهاAt al-‘Aqīq is a fair beloved of mine, to whom I entrusted
- لي في الغرام صبابة قد أسكرتI have, in passionate love, a yearning that has intoxicated
- ما الزهر ما ما الرحمن ما الحللWhat is the flower, what is the Merciful, what are the adornments
- ما لنا في الإمكان أبدع مماWithin possibility, we have nothing more wondrous than what
- ماذا على من غزلته سكينةWhat blame falls on one whom Sukayna has captivated
- محب الله في الدنيا سقيمThe lover of God is ailing in this world.
- من هو أصل وجودWho is the origin of existence?
- من يوم كنت عصا الوجدان تسيارEver since you were the staff of ecstasy, you have journeyed on and on;
- مهلا على قلبي فقد أبليتهBe gentle with my heart, for you have worn it out.
- نسيم الصبا عنعن وسلسل بنافح التThe east wind’s breeze relayed in an unbroken chain a fragrant waft of
- نعمل من لهوى كسوىI make a garment from the air,
- نعمل من لهوى كسوىI make a garment of air,
- نور الحق هداني بفضل عطانيThe light of truth guided me by His grace

- نيل الجفون أذاب قلب العاشقThe Nile of the eyelids melted the lover's heart.
- ها قد بدا فوق البسيطة شمس منBehold, above the meadow the sun has risen
- هب النسيم على الرياض وقد سباThe breeze blew over the gardens, casting its spell.
- هي لؤلؤ تفتر عن درّ بداShe is a pearl, her smile revealing pearls that emerge,
- وأعلم حقا أن بعدي عنكمAnd I truly know that my distance from you
- وغزالة لغزالة خضعت ولكنAnd a gazelle bowed to a gazelle, but
- وقد لاقيت من وقع سهمهاAnd from the strike of her arrow I have suffered
- ولو أن ما بي بالحصا فتت الحصاAnd if what afflicts me were in the pebbles, it would shatter the pebbles.
- وما حيوان في الرياض ممايلاAnd what animal sways in the gardens,
- ونقطة باء في الحقيقة عينهAnd the dot of bāʾ is, in truth, its very essence.
- يا راميا قلبا جريحO archer aiming at a wounded heart,
- يا راميا قلبا جريحO you who shoot at a wounded heart,
- يا ربنا اجعل خير عمري آخرهO our Lord, make the best of my life its end,
- يا ربنا يا مظهر الشهودO our Lord, O Revealer of witnessing,
- يا صاح إن فؤادي قد وهى سجناO friend, my heart has indeed grown frail in confinement,
- يا واردا من ليلى قف متصاغياO you arriving from Layla, stop and listen attentively.
- يا واقفا عند شط البحر منحبساO you standing at the sea's shore, held back,
- يلومونني أهل البعاد على العذبThose of estrangement reproach me for what is sweet.
