    Longing coursed through my heart, wandering toward you in passion.

    So a shattering force of nearness exposed me to death.

    For the star of the dark nights has lent its eyelids

    To a lovesick one beside the ruins, whose sleeplessness never ends.

    I lay sleepless at the gray doves' lament, the star a witness

    At my side, and the judge of love, in which there are crimes.

    فترصد لي جفنا لديه صوارم

    I desire sleep, that your apparition may come into view;

    But you set aside for me an eyelid with keen swords beside it.

    When the crosswind blows, through our body creeps

    The delight of nights of union, with their festivals,

    As tawny wine crept, when it turned into a jewel,

    Through the body of one laid low, within whom doves sang.

    فواكبدي حنت لصخر تهادم

    His bough's suppleness made me misread his eyelids;

    So alas for my liver—it yearned for a rock that crumbled!

    And every beauty in creation has its source

    In a beauty for which all hearts are interpreters.

    And whoever did not answer the call on the day of the throng

    To receive the eyelid's arrows, which pile up within it,

    Has tasted no delight in the flavor of passion,

    And has no share in love with which to partake.
