Ever since you were the staff of ecstasy, you have journeyed on and on;
Since the day I was the staff of inner feeling, ever wandering,
no upland or lowland ever strutted proudly with her.
Neither upland nor lowlands ever beguiled it.

خان العزاء وما تثنيها أوزار
Time wore away her lovely qualities—and how often
Time wore away its beauties, and how often
solace failed, while burdens could not bend her.
Solace failed, yet burdens do not deter it.

How often she was stained with Time’s blood! Devouring never ceased
How often it was stained with time's blood; ceaseless devour-
to carry her, while longing beguiles.
-ing bears it, and longing is a sword-edge.

عنها الخناجر دور الدهر تيار
You broke open Time’s tangled knots, and the daggers withdrew
And I shattered time's perplexities, and away receded
from her; the revolutions of Time are a torrent.
The daggers from it; time's cycle is a torrent.

I seem to see Time’s calamities falling in love with her;
It is as though I see time's calamities loving it.
and so, through every revolution, she changed from phase to phase.
Thus, over the cycles, states were transformed.

Nothing appearing between the two horizons could bend her, nor
What appeared in the East and West did not deter it, nor—
was divine self-disclosure raining lavishly upon creation.
Be the manifestation, pouring abundantly over the worlds.

It turns back its [unclear], wears away its calamities.
it draws her workings near—advance is retreat.
It draws its deeds near; advance is retreat.

It guides its witnesses; the universe has no choice.

We are the two who drank love out of thirst,
We are the two who drank love out of thirst,
while the watering places have habitual visitors and righteous folk.
And the watering places have visitors and righteous folk.
