تحيات من مضنى تغلى على الجمر

The east wind’s breeze relayed in an unbroken chain a fragrant waft of

The morning breeze whispered and gleamed,

salutations from one worn by longing, seething upon the embers.

Bearing greetings from the beloved's abode,

وأنجد في التطلاب يقبس مشكاة

وأنجد في التطلاب يقبس مشكاة

بجدوة أنوار المواهب في القفر

بجدوة أنوار المواهب في القفر

And he went upland in his quest, kindling a lamp-niche

Where yearning's fires blaze upon the embers,

with a firebrand of the lights of gifts in the wilderness.

And the lamp of my longing is lit by desire's spark.

وهام على الأكوان علة يظفرن

وهام على الأكوان علة يظفرن

بأوكار عنقا القرب مهمه السير

بأوكار عنقا القرب مهمه السير

And he wandered over all existence, hoping to attain

My spirit roams the horizons restlessly,

the nests of nearness’s ʿAnqāʾ in the journey’s trackless wilderness.

Seeking intimacy's sanctuary in the bosom of nearness.

ولاقى على الأوطان أهوال عاشق

ولاقى على الأوطان أهوال عاشق

عرته أهاويل على الطي والنشر

عرته أهاويل على الطي والنشر

And across the homelands he encountered the terrors of a lover

And found in homelands dangers that afflict lovers -

whom horrors beset through folding and unfolding.

Misfortunes assailed me, on land and sea.

وكاد غبر الأرض يصطاد ما عنا

وكاد غبر الأرض يصطاد ما عنا

ه ما خانه ما كان يعلم من صبر

ه ما خانه ما كان يعلم من صبر

And amid the earth’s dust, he nearly caught what concerned

Almost did the dust of the earth snare what I sought -

him; the patience he knew did not fail him.

That which evaded me was what I knew not of patience.

وجاب سباريت السباسب وهو في

وجاب سباريت السباسب وهو في

السباريت أهدى من قطارية الجحر

السباريت أهدى من قطارية الجحر

And he crossed the barren expanses of the steppes, while in

I roamed the galaxies, more guided therein

the wastes he was better guided than the qaṭāriyya of the burrow.

Than creatures that crawl and burrow under the earth.

وووجه بالأخطار من حيث قد بدا

وووجه بالأخطار من حيث قد بدا

التشاجر في الأسما وأين ذوو السير

التشاجر في الأسما وأين ذوو السير

And he was confronted with dangers where there had appeared

I set my face towards peril, wherever it appeared,

contention among the Names—and where are the wayfarers?

And discord in the heavens - where are those who venture?

فما لهم في البحر أيد طوائل

فما لهم في البحر أيد طوائل

يغوصوا بها كيما يروا معدن التبر

يغوصوا بها كيما يروا معدن التبر

For they have no far-reaching hands in the sea

For they have no hands to plunge the ocean's depths,

with which to dive and see the source of raw gold.

To see the mines of pearls in the heart of the seas.

ولا لهم في البحر علم به يخو

ولا لهم في البحر علم به يخو

ضوا لجته العظمى قتب الدهر

ضوا لجته العظمى قتب الدهر

Nor have they knowledge of the sea by which to wade

Nor have they knowledge of it, to dare to brave

into its greatest deep—the pack-saddle of time.

Its mighty expanse, throughout the ages.

ولو سيروا فلكا تسير بهم على

ولو سيروا فلكا تسير بهم على

متون ظهور أو بطون على البحر

متون ظهور أو بطون على البحر

And even if they launched a ship to carry them upon

If they traversed a ship sailing with them

the broad backs or bellies upon the sea.

Over the backs or bellies of the oceans -

لما جن ليل الهجر إذ عسعس النوى

لما جن ليل الهجر إذ عسعس النوى

وعرس جند الوهم في غصص الفكر

وعرس جند الوهم في غصص الفكر

When estrangement’s night fell, as separation darkened,

Before the night of separation fell, desires stirred,

and illusion’s troops encamped amid thought’s choking sorrows,

And the hosts of illusion murmured in the thicket of thought,

وأرخى زمان البين راووق فرقة

وأرخى زمان البين راووق فرقة

فأٌصى قلوبا عن مشاهدة السر

فأٌصى قلوبا عن مشاهدة السر

and the time of separation lowered a filter of parting,

And the days of distance dropped the curtains of parting,

and drove hearts away from beholding the secret.

Turning hearts away from beholding the mysteries.

ألا إن بحر الفضل خضناه لا نُكن

ألا إن بحر الفضل خضناه لا نُكن

ني عنه ولا نوري وقد فاض بالدر

ني عنه ولا نوري وقد فاض بالدر

Behold, we have waded into the sea of grace; we do not speak allusively

Behold, we plunged into the ocean of grace - we do not

of it, nor in double meanings; it has overflowed with pearls.

Conceal it, nor keep it hidden, for it overflows with pearls.

وقد أبت من بحر العجائب ناشرا

وقد أبت من بحر العجائب ناشرا

غرائب ما أوتيت من قاموس الوتر

غرائب ما أوتيت من قاموس الوتر

And I have returned from the sea of wonders, proclaiming

And we drew wondrous rarities from the sea of wonders -

the marvels I was granted from the ocean of the One.

Gifts I was granted, from the lexicon of divine gifts.

وأسأرت من خلفي بسؤر بقية

وأسأرت من خلفي بسؤر بقية

وأوردته العلم اللدني بلا فخر

وأوردته العلم اللدني بلا فخر

And I left a remaining draught for whoever followed me,

And I passed down to those after me a legacy of mysteries,

and brought him to drink of divinely bestowed knowledge, without boasting.

And endowed them with eternal knowledge, without pride.

وخضت بحارا طاميات زواجرا

وخضت بحارا طاميات زواجرا

برشحتها هامت خلائق بالسكر

برشحتها هامت خلائق بالسكر

And I waded into seas, surging and roaring;

I traversed tumultuous seas, repelling those who would forbid it,

through their seepage, creatures grew delirious with intoxication.

At which people thrilled with bliss.

وشاهدت أسرارا تنوء بها عقول أه

وشاهدت أسرارا تنوء بها عقول أه

ل الحجاب الصاديات من الخير

ل الحجاب الصاديات من الخير

And I beheld secrets that weigh down the minds of the people

I witnessed secrets that weigh down reason,

of the veil, thirsting for goodness.

Impenetrable veils, blocking blessings.

وقربني ربي وأطلعني على

وقربني ربي وأطلعني على

مكامن أسرار وقرب لي سيري

مكامن أسرار وقرب لي سيري

And my Lord brought me near and let me behold

Yet my Lord brought me near, and revealed to me

the hidden places of secrets, and shortened my journey for me.

The places of secrets, and drew me closer to my path.

وعلمني العلم المصون وكان لي

وعلمني العلم المصون وكان لي

وأصدرني للكون أورد صدري

وأصدرني للكون أورد صدري

And He taught me guarded knowledge and stood by me;

He taught me the guarded knowledge, and it became

and sent me forth to creation, having brought my breast to drink.

For me a guide - He opened my breast.

فمن رامنا يلق المعارف تنجلى

فمن رامنا يلق المعارف تنجلى

عليه وألطاف العوارف والبر

عليه وألطاف العوارف والبر

So whoever seeks us finds spiritual knowledge unfolding

And sent me out into the world and made my heart receptive,

before him, and the gentle graces of blessings and benevolence.

So whoever seeks wisdom and grace from me

ويدرك ما نال الأوائل أو يز

ويدرك ما نال الأوائل أو يز

يد من منح الوهاب ذي الطول للدهر

يد من منح الوهاب ذي الطول للدهر

And he attains what the predecessors attained, or gains still

Will gain the knowledge bestowed on the ancients,

more from the gifts of the Bestower, Possessor of bounty for all time.

Or more of the Giver's gifts - endless through the ages.

مربي البرايا جل أمر إلهنا

مربي البرايا جل أمر إلهنا

لقد أعجز الإرسال عن درك الشكر

لقد أعجز الإرسال عن درك الشكر

Nurturer of all creatures—exalted is the command of our God!

O Educator of wildernesses! Exalted is the command of our God!

He has indeed left the messengers unable to attain due gratitude.

The sending of blessings fails to attain thanking You enough.

لك الحمد رب العالمين كما انبغى

لك الحمد رب العالمين كما انبغى

لسلطانك القهري في الخلق والأمر

لسلطانك القهري في الخلق والأمر

Yours is praise, Lord of the worlds, as befits

Yours is praise, Lord of the Worlds, as befits

Your all-subduing sovereignty in creation and command.

Your dominion of compulsion, over creation and command,

بألسن جند العالمين وأنواع الت

بألسن جند العالمين وأنواع الت

تحاميد أثني يا إلهي وما أدري

تحاميد أثني يا إلهي وما أدري

With the tongues of the hosts of all worlds, and every kind of

By the tongues of the world's hosts, and all types

praise, I extol You, my God, though I do not know.

Of praising hymns! I praise You, my God, but know not

بألسن أملاك وألسن إرسال

بألسن أملاك وألسن إرسال

وألسن صحب أحمد السر بالسر

وألسن صحب أحمد السر بالسر

With the tongues of angels and the tongues of messengers,

With the tongues of angels, tongues of messengers,

and the tongues of Aḥmad’s companions, the secret through the secret;

And tongues of the Prophet's companions, intimate with secrets,

وبألسن أفراد وألسن أغواث

وبألسن أفراد وألسن أغواث

وألسن أجراس تنوء عن الحصر

وألسن أجراس تنوء عن الحصر

and with the tongues of solitary ones and the tongues of succor-givers,

And tongues of individuals, tongues of saviors,

and the tongues of bells that defy all reckoning;

And tongues of bells, beyond counting,

وألسن أضعاف الكمال المحمدي

وألسن أضعاف الكمال المحمدي

عليه صلاة الله في الدهر للدهر

عليه صلاة الله في الدهر للدهر

and the tongues of Muḥammadan perfection multiplied manyfold—

And tongues of the multiples of Muhammad's perfection -

God’s blessings upon him, throughout time and for all time—

Upon him, God's prayers, forever and for always -

وآله أهل الإرث ما قد تماسكت

وآله أهل الإرث ما قد تماسكت

بهم حبل الأكوان في الصدع والكسر

بهم حبل الأكوان في الصدع والكسر

and upon his family, the inheritors, for as long as

And his family, the people of inheritance, by whom

through them the cord of the worlds holds fast amid rending and breaking.

The rope of the cosmos holds, despite splitting and breaking.

فيا ربنا رب العوالم عجلن

فيا ربنا رب العوالم عجلن

مآرب أوطاري وأوطار ذوي العسر

مآرب أوطاري وأوطار ذوي العسر

So, O our Lord, Lord of all worlds, hasten

So O Lord of the Worlds, O Granter of wishes,

the fulfillment of my wishes and the wishes of those in hardship.

Make smooth the paths of my friends and those in adversity.

وواجهنا بالألطاف في كل حالة

وواجهنا بالألطاف في كل حالة

وبادهنا بالخيرات يا مالك الأمر

وبادهنا بالخيرات يا مالك الأمر

And meet us with gentle graces in every state,

Greet us with kindness in every situation,

and surprise us with blessings, O Master of all affairs.

And allow us success, O Master of Command.

وفرج غموم الخلق والبسنا جلا

وفرج غموم الخلق والبسنا جلا

بيب المراحم والإسعاد واليسر

بيب المراحم والإسعاد واليسر

And dispel creation’s sorrows, and clothe us in

Relieve the worries of people, and clothe us in robes

robes of mercy, happiness, and ease.

Of compassion, joy and ease.

وسلم لنا الأزمان يا سلام من الحوا

وسلم لنا الأزمان يا سلام من الحوا

دث والأوحال والهم والجور

دث والأوحال والهم والجور

And keep our times safe for us, O Peace, from

And secure for us times, O Peace, from events,

calamities, mire, worry, and injustice.

Pitfalls, anxiety, and tyranny.

وطهر قلوبنا من قواطع أشرفت

وطهر قلوبنا من قواطع أشرفت

على الهلاك يا قدوس يا كاشف الضر

على الهلاك يا قدوس يا كاشف الضر

And purify our hearts of hindrances, as they stand

And purify our hearts from obstacles that lead

on the brink of ruin, O Most Holy, O Remover of harm.

To perdition, O Most Holy, O Remover of Harm,

إلى وطن الأحباب مركز آمالي

إلى وطن الأحباب مركز آمالي

ومسقط رأس الفضل والمجد والفخر

ومسقط رأس الفضل والمجد والفخر

To the homeland of the beloved ones, the center of my hopes,

To the homeland of loved ones, focus of my hopes,

and the birthplace of excellence, glory, and pride.

And birthplace of excellence, glory and pride.
