When we reach the waters of Midian, there shine

the wellsprings of my litany, as I seize my chance.

of spiritual knowledge and secrets, from the source of my being.

But when I seek the water, already wounded

by thirst in the thirsty midday heats,

nor casting off the garments of thoughts

that cloud my heart and hinder union with my presence,

nor tearing the sealed veils away from the little heart,

veils of bodily impurity in my primal clay,

nor closing the breach made by distractions from the depths

of base illusions within the cage of my desire,

nor keeping vigil in the encampment, hoping for union with her,

nor forgetting my whole self and all that I am,

nor casting the cords of passion off myself, nor

feigning deafness to their severing the bonds of my union,

nor checking the copious tears I shed,

that cleanse my eyelid of all but her, and purify my repentance,

nor repenting of every wolf and passing thought,

and illusion, confusion, and the tainting of my food,

and I said to the gatekeeper of the last hearts:

Why have time's afflictions exhausted him through my ardor?

Then he said: He seeks no gain in love; so have mercy

on your captive, whom every great ordeal has worn away.

so care for a captive who is now bound by the reins.

In every state, my heart is an endowment for you,

and if I die at the thresholds, I die in my passionate love.
