صلّa viper اللديغthe bitten one أذابmelted قلبthe heart of الراسخthe steadfast one
صلّ اللديغ أذاب قلب الراسخ
والبينand separation حلsettled in حشاthe depths of الفؤادthe heart الصارخcrying out
والبين حل حشا الفؤاد الصارخ
The bitten one's viper melted the steadfast one's heart.
The serpent's sting melted the steadfast heart
And separation settled in the depths of the crying heart.
And separation filled the crying soul with desolation
كلمthe wound of الغرامpassionate love أصابنيstruck me يومthe day of النوىparting
كلم الغرام أصابني يوم النوى
بينbetween العراقIraq ومنهلand a watering place للشارخfor the young man
بين العراق ومنهل للشارخ
Love's wound struck me on the day of parting.
The affliction of love struck me the day of parting
Between Iraq and a watering place for the young man.
Between Iraq and the watering place of the arid land
سيفthe sword of اللحاظglances أذاقنيmade me taste طعمthe taste of الهناbliss
سيف اللحاظ أذاقني طعم الهنا
بينamong الخيامthe tents وزفرتيand my sigh فيin ناقخone who strikes the head
بين الخيام وزفرتي في ناقخ
The sword of glances made me taste bliss.
The sword of the glance made me taste ecstasy
Among the tents, while my sigh lies within a head-striker.
Between the tents as I sighed in the watchman
كلمthe wound of الحجازthe Hijaz وحاجرand Hajir جمرembers الذرىthe summits
كلم الحجاز وحاجر جمر الذرى
وربand by the Lord of الدرpearls إذwhen نسيمهاtheir breeze منfrom نافخone who blows
ورب الدر إذ نسيمها من نافخ
The wound of the Hijaz and Hajir is the summits' embers.
The word of Hejaz and the hot embers
And by the Lord of pearls, when their breeze comes from one who blows.
And the Lord of the house when its breeze blew from the blower
قبلkisses الجفونthe eyelids أصابنيstruck me يومthe day of الوغىbattle
قبل الجفون أصابني يوم الوغى
وسنانand the point of رمحa spear للزريfor scorn فيin سانخone firmly rooted
وسنان رمح للزري في سانخ
The eyelids' kisses struck me on the day of battle.
Before the eyelids, war struck me that day
And a spearhead for scorn lies within one firmly rooted.
And the fang of a spear for the warrior in the intense moment
صبa lovesick man غداwent نحوtoward الحجونal-Hajun بجانبto one side
صب غدا نحو الحجون بجانب
فسهامso the arrows of لحظa glance سمومهاtheir poisons فيin برزوخa barrier (uncertain form)
فسهام لحظ سمومها في برزوخ
A lovesick man went toward al-Hajun, off to one side.
Pour tomorrow towards the cheeks alongside
So the arrows of a glance—their poisons lie in a barrier [uncertain reading].
So the glances' arrows poisoned in uncertainty
ياO مالكاmaster ياO سائقاone who drives بفؤادwith a heart
يا مالكا يا سائقا بفؤاد
جهلاin ignorance رويدكgently now فالسقامfor sickness بنائخsettled down
جهلا رويدك فالسقام بنائخ
O master, O you who drive a heart,
O rider, o driver with a heart
In ignorance—gently now, for sickness has alighted.
Slow down in ignorance, for the illness is slumbering
وتنينand a dragon لسعstung سمومهاtheir poisons حشوthe filling of الحشاthe entrails
وتنين لسع سمومها حشو الحشا
والبينand separation منهلكperishing لجسمfor the body of الشامخthe proud one
والبين منهلك لجسم الشامخ
And a dragon stung; their poisons fill the entrails.
And the serpent's sting filled the desolation with venom
And separation is ruin for the proud one's body.
While separation is your watering place, o sturdy body
ياO ساكناdweller in ربعthe abode of الحمىthe sanctuary رفقاgently بهwith him
يا ساكنا ربع الحمى رفقا به
قدindeed مزقtore apart الهجرانestrangement طرفيmy eye الشايخaging
قد مزق الهجران طرفي الشايخ
O dweller in the sanctuary's abode, be gentle with him.
O dweller of the protected place, be gentle with it
Estrangement has torn my aging eye apart.
Separation has torn the sides of the old man
ياO بارقاflashing lightning نحوtoward الحمىthe sanctuary أنشدهمrecite to them
يا بارقا نحو الحمى أنشدهم
صلa viper للديغfor the bitten one أذابmelted قلبthe heart of الراسخthe steadfast one
صل للديغ أذاب قلب الراسخ
O lightning flashing toward the sanctuary, recite to them:
O lightning towards the protected place, chant to them
A viper for the bitten one melted the steadfast one's heart.
The serpent's sting melted the steadfast heart
