What do you think, O Bu Muhammad, will happen to people
بزغت بالظلام شمس الديور
The sun of eras rose in the darkness
مضى خلف الأبرار والسيد الطهر
The righteous have passed, and the pure master,
لا بر في الحب يا أهل الهوى قسمي
There is no goodness in love, O people of passion, divide my fate
أعجم هواك واجفاني عنه يفصحن
Your love has struck me dumb, yet still my eyes speak of it
إذا ذكرتك ولاح البدر لي حنيت
When I remembered you and the full moon appeared to me, I yearned
لما لماضي الحسن جدد عذاره رسم
When the past renewed its beautiful imprint
لما نهج النوى بالسير شديتم
Homeward bound the camel litters bear
يا قلب حتام اجهد في مدافعتك
O heart, you have tried your best to defend
كنت أرتجيك إذا جار الزمان علي
I hoped that if time oppressed me
يا طرس إن جئت عني صاحب المن
O Tars, if you come to me from my companion
لي لوعة فيك طول الدهر تتجدد
For you, my anguish renews forever,
جودة أكفك وكفك عن ذوي الإجرام
Your generosity suffices, spare those committing crimes
يا مصدر البيض محمره وسمر الصعد
O source of eggs, red and brown,
وبي قمر منير ضاع مني
A radiant moon of mine was lost to me
أشذاء زهر الباقلاء تضوعت
The blossoms of the broad beans have donned
قضى حسنه فليبكه اليوم عاشقه
His beauty passed, so today his lover weeps,
غربت منكم شموس التلاقي
The suns of our meeting have set,
قلت إذا غاب منيتي أين روحي
I said, when my wish was gone, where is my soul?
ذو المعالي الباهرات علي
Ali, the one with brilliant, lofty traits
خر الورى حيدري عم نائله
The best of creation, my master Haydar
إلى الله نشكو فادحات النوائب
To God we complain of the calamities that afflict us,
هذا العقيق وتلك شم رعانه
This carnelian and that fragrant musk,
روى عن الريق منها الثغر والشنب
Her mouth and lips told tales of the soul's rapture
لله قوم بأكناف الحمى نزلوا
They have a people for Allah dwelling at the side of the sanctuary
أتنكر بأس أحداق العذارى
I deny not the glance of the virgins’ eyes
هذا الحمى فانزل على جرعائه
This fever, so descend upon its victim
يا منة لذ بها السكر
O delight intoxicated by bliss
نبتت رياحين العذار بورده
The blossoms of adoration have sprouted with their roses,
لناركم بالجوى يا نازحين وقود
Your fire has the migrating birds as fuel
داعي الجهل عن زيارة مغرمك انفاك
O ignorant caller, cease your visiting of the one you love

إن شئت يا نفس مما تفزعين تنجين
If you desire, O my soul, to be saved from that which frightens you
هوى الكوكب الدري من أفق المجد
The brilliant star has set on the horizon of glory
سطعت شموس قبابهم بزرود
Their domes' suns shone with blue
حيدري عم نائله
Its heights are beyond what's attained
الحمد لله ارهب عنك ما تخشاه
By the grace of God, ward off that which you fear
يا خيرتي من أهل ودي ومن ناسي
O my beloved people, you whom I cherish,
يا بركة المجد يا من للكرام إمام
O blessing of glory, O leader of the generous
جعلتك بالسويدا من فؤادي
I made you the apple of my eye
كم معرك فيه يغرق بالدم المعتام
How many a battle in which the dark earth is drowned in blood
لك راحة من عطاياها الزمان امتلا
You have a respite from time's gifts, filled up
حتام يا قلب عن نجل العيون أنهاك
Surely, my heart, cease longing for the charming eyes that have wearied you,
يا من بعينه يرى الخطب الجليل يسير
Roams with eyes that see the mighty misfortunes pass
حتام فيكم أعاني الشوق وأقاسي
I suffer longing among you and endure
تصاحى وهو مخمور الجنان
He awoke while still drunk with love,
عج بالعقيق وناد أسد سراته
Urge the red-garbed lions of Sarat,
بقيت بقاء الدهر يا بهجة الدهر
You have remained forever, O joy of all time
هلم بنا إلى أرض الحجون
Come with me to the land of peace
حتام أسألها الدنو فتنزح
I ask her for affection, so she becomes aloof,
كشفت حجاب السجف عن بيضة الخدر
I unveiled the veil of darkness from the moon's orb,
ضربوا القباب وطنبوها بالقنا
They struck the domes and plastered them with mud
قد براها للسرى جذب براها
Her beauty attracted the captives,
سفرت فبرقعها حجاب جمال
She traveled, so the veil of her beauty was lifted,
ما بال وتر صلاتكم لا يشفع
Your prayers' string cannot be joined,
عرج على البان وانشد في مجانيه
Journey to the deserts and recite among its sands
روت عن تراقيها العقود عن النحر
The epochs told of her neck's graces,
هلم بنا يا برق في أبرق الحمى
Come with us, O lightning, amidst the flashing fever,
طلبت عظيم المجد بالهمة الكبرى
You sought great glory with strong determination,
كتم الهوى فوشى النحول بسره
He concealed his love, so his leanness betrayed his secret,
خطبت المجد بالأسل العوالي
You sought glory with lofty determination,
يلوح فتستدعي الفراش وتبسم
She beckons, summoning the butterflies, smiling,
أموا بنا نحو العقيق وأدلجوا
Our mothers directed us towards Al-‘Aqeeq, and prodded,
خلط الغرام الشجو في أمشاجه
Love and yearning intermingled
ترفعت عن رجا الأنذال همتنا
We held our heads high and spurned the hopes of the lowly
ظبي إذا ما رنا منه الأسود ترتهب
A gazelle, when the fierce lion approaches, trembles in fear.
لما سنا الحسن من خديك آنسنا
When the radiance of your cheeks brought us joy
سلطان حسنك بحكم الجور خليته
Your tyrannical rule made a sultan of your beauty
ما الراح إلا روح كل حزين
The breeze is but the soul of every sorrowful one,
لي مهجة زاد فيك خفوق واجبها
I have a heart whose pounding for you has increased,
قلبي بغير الخدود الحمر لا يعني
My heart cares not for cheeks other than red
ما حركت سكنات الأعين النجل
The dark eyes were not stirred,
لك غصن قد بأنواع البها أثمر
You have a branch of eternity, bearing all kinds of brilliance
يا من بسيف النوال أباد نفس المال
O you who with the sword of justice destroyed the soul of tyranny,
حتام أشغل بفكر القلب واعذبه
Always my heart is preoccupied, thinking of you
خفرت بسيف الغنج ذمة مغفري
My guilt was diminished by the sword of forgiveness,
يا فارغ البال اشغل بعدكم بالي
O you who occupy my thoughts,
أمن البروج تعد أكناف الحمى
The constellations count the corners of the tents
ميلوا بنا نحو الحجون ونكبوا
Lean towards the hills and bend your course
ضحكت فبان لنا عقود جمان
She laughed, and the pearls of her teeth appeared
خطرت فمال الغصن وهو ممنطق
She moved gently, so the branch bent as if bound
حتام يا نفس من سكر الهوى تصحين
Awaken, O soul, from the intoxication of passion
شط العرب إن طفح جوده ومده طما
The Arabs spread widely when his generosity overflowed
كم صاحب لوفد رحولك تدور رحاه
How many a companion, if he turned away from you, you would wander to find him
يا من به الجمع في يوم الوغا مشهود
O you to whom multitudes are witnessed on the day of departure
يا من بأعداه شفرات المناصل دام
O you whose blades are sharpened daggers, whose
يا بركة المجد يا غيث النوال الهام
O blessing of glory, O rain of inspiration's clouds,
يا باعث الجود بعد الموت والإعدام
O source of generosity after death and execution
الغيث إن خص أحيانا فجودك عام
Though the rain may favor some years with its plenty,
يا ناقل المصباح لا تمرر على
O lamp bearer pass not by
ووصوت شاد حكى في سجع منطقه
With a happy voice his eloquent speech rang
كأنما الأفق لما شمسه غربت
As though when its sun had set on the horizon
أوائل أسماء الذين ارتجيتهم
The first letters of the names of those I hoped for
ينم عليه الدمع وهو جحود
Tears flow on him yet he is ungrateful,
أيها المصقع المهذب طبعا
O refined, well-mannered poet
محاسنك للعقول الراسخة تدهشن
Your beauty astounds disciplined minds,
بروحي عارضا كالشذر حسنا
With my soul I compare your beauty
سلام حكى في حسنه لؤلؤ العقد
Greetings that told of his beauty like pearls on a necklace
هذا هو العيد أقبل يا حمى الإسلام
This is Eid, welcome O fever of Islam
من فوق صادين عينيك الدعج نونان
Above the two deer eyes of yours, Nu'nan,
قصري إليكم صلاتي بالطريق تمام
My prayers to you are complete as I travel
أيها المصقع المهذب طبعا
O refined and well-mannered young man
فخر الورى حيدري عم نائله
The pride of mankind, my Master whose wishes are fulfilled
كفيت خلاف الدهر يا واحد الورى
You have defied the vicissitudes of time, O singular in the world,
هويت نجل العيون وفي هواك أرداك
I fell in love with the most beautiful eyes, and in my love for you I pursued you,
حصن العلية بفخرك زاد فخر وسما
The fortress of Aliya grows prouder still with your pride
يا بركة المجد يا ليث الوغا المفترس
O blessing of glory, O fierce lion
فخر الورى ذو المعالي الباهرات علي
Ali, pride of the world, possessor of glorious feats
يا من موارده من مره علي عذاب
O you whose resources once brought suffering upon me,
لما على وجنته نثر الحسن أوراق
When beauty scattered petals on his cheeks,
نفائس العمر بالآمال أنفقها
I spent the gems of life on hopes,
يا خير من سار في سرج وصار بكور
O best of those who rode at dawn in procession
ما الظن أظما وفي كفيك بحر الجود
What is the most generous hope when the sea of generosity is in your hands?
كنت ارتجيكم إذا قل الصديق صديق
I hoped in you when the friend was scarce
أحباب لي مهجة بالسير تتراكم
My loved ones kept journeying on
ماذا على من أذى الأشواق ينهكه
What can he who is worn down by intense longing do
لو أقسم المرء بالرحمن خالقه
If one swears by the Merciful, his Creator,
يا سيف عزم فلق هام العدا مضربك
O sword of resolute will that splits the neck of the foe,
فارقني النوم منذ بليت في فرقاك
Sleep has left me since we parted
كم بالورى من خبيث الذات أعلمك
لله إخوان صدق ما هواهم مين
أنوارك الخاطفة لعقولنا تسترق
لي مهجة لا تزال إليك مصروفه
فقت الكهول بإدراكك وأنت غلام
هل المحرم فاستهل مكبرا
هذا الحمى يا فتى فانزل بحومته
كم ليلة قمت فيها والخلق نوما
النوم بعدك على عيني رد نقاه
بالزور شانيك عارض فوق خدك خط
ظبي قبض بالهوى مني الحواس رهون
يا عاذلي يوم جد الحب بالفرقا
يا جيرة بالطرب تحيي دياجيكم
يا من بشوقه على جيش الهموم نصول
لا الفكر يمكن يصيد لقاك بمراسله
أمين للموت نصلك ما يرى كلمه
فقت السلف يا حسين وأنت أتيت أخير

أما ومواضي مقلتيها الفواصل
ويا وميض بروق المزن إن سفرت
نصال من جفونك أم سهام
تلثم بالعقيق على اللآلي
رنا فسل على العشاق أحوره
