- أأسلوا وقد غبت عن ناظريCan I forget, when you have vanished from my sight,
- أتدري من تبارز بالذنوبDo you know whom you openly defy with sins,
- إذا أملت من مولاك قرباIf you hope for nearness to your Lord,
- إذا بهرت للهاشمي دلالةWhen a proof for the Hashimite shines forth dazzlingly,
- إذا غاب أهل الصدق عنك فإنماWhen people of truth depart from you, it is only
- أسير الخطايا عند بابك واقفA captive of sins stands at Your door,
- أصخ فلخير العالمين مناقبListen closely, for the best of all beings has virtues
- أصفيتك الود مضطرا ومختاراI gave you pure affection, compelled and freely choosing,
- أطع مولاك تظفر بالنجاحObey your Lord, and you will attain success.
- أطلت وحقي أن أطيل لأننيI have spoken long—and rightly may I linger—for I
- أعد نظرا في نسبة الفضل والنسكReconsider the attribution of merit and devotion,
- أعدد لضيفك أهبة الإِكرامPrepare for your guest all the trappings of honor,
- اعمل بآثار النبيLive by the legacy of the
- أغيب وعندي بالوفاء حضورI am absent, yet in fidelity I remain present.
- ألا قل للثقاة السامعينHear, tell the trustworthy listeners,
- الخمر متلفة لدينك فاحذرWine destroys your faith, so beware.
- الخوف والأنس شيء ليس يتفقFear and intimacy do not go together.
- الطعن والضرب منسوبان للعربThrusting and striking are ascribed to the Arabs,
- ألم يأن أن يروى فؤاد متيمHas the time not come for a lovesick heart to quench its thirst?
- الناس قد رحلوا وأنت مقيمThe people have departed, while you remain.
- إلى الله فلترفع أكف الخلائقTo God, then, let all creatures raise their palms;
- أما يمين محمدAs for Muhammad's right hand
- إن الكبائر للطاعات مفسدةIndeed, major sins are destructive to acts of obedience.
- أنا مذ بنت يا أبا العباسEver since you departed, O Abu al-Abbas, I have been
- إني رأيت العز مستودعاIndeed, I have seen honor laid up
- أهلا بغرتك السعيدهWelcome to your auspicious, radiant brow,
- أوخطب فرقتكم لدي قليلاIs the calamity of parting from you a small matter to me?
- أولى الأمور بسترOf all things, most deserving of concealment
- أي نور كشف الله بهWhat a light, through whom God dispelled
- أيا ذا الفضل والمننO possessor of bounty and favors,
- أيا عاصي النصيحة والوصاةO you who spurn counsel and admonition,
- بأوجد مني مذ نأيت وإنماMore anguished than I since you departed; I only
- بحمد الله يفتتح الكلامSpeech begins with praise of God.
- بدا علم للحب يممت نحوهA banner of love appeared; I made my way toward it.
- بدت لجفونك العبرLessons have appeared before your eyes,
- بذكرك نستكفي وإياك نعبدBy remembering You we seek sufficiency, and You alone we worship.
- بذكرك يبلغ الأربThrough remembering You, the desired aim is attained;
- بركات رسل الله غير خفيةThe blessings of God's messengers are not hidden,
- بيني وبين الفضل كل تنوفةBetween me and virtue lie all the boundless wastes
- تأدب إذا ذكر المصطفىShow reverence when the Chosen One is mentioned,
- تصبر إذا نابتك للخطب شدةBe steadfast when calamity brings you hardship;
- تقربت إلا في رضى الأم والأبYou draw near to God only through the mother’s and father’s good pleasure,
- تمنيت من وصل الحبيب اختلاسةI longed to steal a fleeting moment of union with the beloved,
- توكل إذا نابتك يوما ملمةPut your trust, if one day a calamity befalls you,
- ثق بالإِله فإنهTrust in God, for He
- ثوى لك في قلبي غرام مبرحA tormenting passion for you has made its home within my heart;
- جحدت الهوى حتى تبدت شهودهI denied love until its witnesses appeared.
- حال يقل لمثلهاA plight for whose like too slight is
- حروب النوى والقرب فيك سجالThe wars of distance and nearness over you take turns:
- حمل الفؤاد على الهوى وتحملاHe drove the heart toward passion and took its burden on,
- حننت إلى العهد الذي كان فانقضىI longed for the time that once was, then passed away.
- خذها إليك أبا إسحاق عن عجلTake it, Abu Ishaq—sent to you in haste:
- خليلي ما للقلب يهفو من الأسىMy two friends, why does the heart flutter with sorrow?
- خنازير ناموا عن المكرماتSwine slept on, heedless of noble deeds;
- خير الأخلاء من حلتك صحبتهThe best of friends is one whose companionship has adorned you
- دليل علاك ليس على اعتراضThe proof of your eminence admits no objection,
- دموعي أبت إلا انسكابا لعلهاMy tears would do nothing but pour forth; perhaps they
- ذكرتك فارتاح الفؤاد صبابةI remembered you, and my heart found solace in yearning
- ذهب الكرام فلا كريم يرتجيThe noble have gone—no generous man remains from whom one may hope
- رأيت بني الدنيا يؤمل نفعهمI have seen the sons of this world, their help hoped for,
- رأيت ذنوب العالمين قبيحةI saw the sins of humankind as ugly,
- رحلت وقد وجدت العيش مراI departed, having found life bitter
- ردوا عبرة تهمي كما انهمل القطرCome to a tear streaming as the rain poured down,
- رشوا بماء الورد ضيفا لناSprinkle a guest of ours with rosewater—
- رضا الله أعلى ما ارتجته عبيدهGod's good pleasure is the highest thing His servants have hoped for.
- زرعت بماء الدمع في القلب روضةWith the water of tears, I planted in my heart a garden
- زمان بتطهير القلوب موكلA time appointed for purifying hearts,
- سبحان من في كل شيء شاهدGlory be to Him who, in everything, is witness
- سلام وتقديم التحية واجبA greeting of peace and the offering of salutations are due
- سلوا علماء الحب عما أكنهAsk the scholars of love about what I conceal.
- شربت كؤوس الحب صرفا وليس ليI drank love’s cups neat, with no
- صدروا وسحر لحاظهم يغرينيThey departed, while the magic of their glances enticed me.
- صرحت بالحب إذ لم يجد تلميحI declared my love, since hints were of no avail.
- صفا لي ورد الحب حتى وردتهLove’s draught ran clear for me, until I came to drink it;
- ضعوا فوق قلبي راحة الصبر إننيPlace the palm of patience upon my heart, for I
- طويت الحشا مني على حر لوعةI folded my inward parts around the burning heat of anguish.
- ظمئت وأجفاني بدمعي فيضI thirsted while my eyelids brimmed with my tears.
- عجبا للناس تاهواHow strange that people have lost their way
- عجبا لمن ترك الحقيقة جانباHow strange that one should cast the truth aside
- عزمت على كتم الهوى فوشى بهI resolved to conceal my love, but it was betrayed by
- علاؤك مضمون وسعدك واضحYour eminence is assured, your good fortune plain;
- علم الحديث لكل علم حجةThe science of hadith is authoritative proof for every field of knowledge;
- غلا الحب فابذل فيه نفسك طائعاLove commands a dear price—so offer your very self to it willingly.
- فالآن أحسن إن نثرتSo now I excel, whether I write prose
- فسما به وهو النهايةSo he rose through it, and he is the pinna-
- فضحت بدمعي سر قلبي صبابةIn yearning, I betrayed my heart’s secret with my tears.
- فكأنه شجر بدا لكنهاSo it seemed like trees come into view, yet they were
- قبح الإله الملحدينMay God disgrace the atheists,
- قفوا فاسألوني اليوم عن لوعة الهوىStay, and ask me today about love’s torment;
- قل للمحدث الصوفي منSay to the Sufi hadith scholar, from
- قل للنسيم إذا الصباح أعلهSay to the breeze, when dawn has given it another draught,
- قل لمن يحسدكمSay to whoever envies you,
- كانت للمسرة معهداIt was a haven of joy.
- كتمت الهوى حتى تبدت سماتهI concealed love until its signs appeared,
- كل من قاس نبيا بسواهEveryone who compares a prophet with anyone else
- كم في الدياجير من ذخر وفائدةHow much treasure and benefit the deep darkness holds
- كملت بنعت محمد خير الورىThrough praise of Muhammad, the best of creation, perfected are
- كناس الأنس بعد نواك خيسThe covert of companionship is a lion's lair since your departure.
- لا بد للمعتل من آسيWhoever relies on others must have someone to comfort him;
- لا تجزعن لمكروه تصاب بهDo not grieve at any affliction that befalls you;
- لا تضق ذرعا بخطب نازلDo not be overwhelmed by a calamity that befalls you.
- لا زال في عفو وعافيةMay he never cease to enjoy pardon and well-being;
- لا يخدعنك ظاهر من باطنLet no outward show deceive you about what lies within,
- لاح وقد فاح بهار النهارIt gleamed—and as it did, the day’s splendor breathed perfume,
- لأهل الهوى في الدمع والسهد لذةFor lovers, there is pleasure in tears and sleeplessness.
- لبيك من مخلص موالAt your service, from a devoted, loyal one,
- لعزك ذلت الأممBefore your might, the nations bowed low;
- لعمري لقد ذقت الهوى فوجدتهBy my life, I have tasted love and found it thus:
- لكم من فؤادي خلص الود والحبFor you, my heart's affection and love have been made pure.
- لله أيامي بكمBy God, how blessed were my days with you,
- لم تبق معلوة إلا خصصت بهاNo exalted quality remains but you alone have been endowed with it—
- ما خمر العقل فهو خمرWhatever intoxicates the mind is wine;
- ماذا أقول ولا عتب على الزمنWhat can I say? There is no blame to lay on time.
- ماذا أقول ولا عتب على القدرWhat can I say? No blame can fall upon fate,
- متى تنجلي عن ناظر لوعة الهوىWhen shall love’s anguish clear from a beholder’s sight,
- معالم يفنى كل شيء وإنهاLandmarks—everything perishes, yet they
- مقامات أهل الدين عند بني الدنياThe stations of the people of faith among the children of this world
- من خدم المولى بإخلاصهWhoever serves the Lord with sincerity
- من عذل العقرب في لسعهاWhoever reproaches the scorpion for her sting
- نعم الإله بشكره تتقيدGod's blessings are held fast by thanking Him.
- نقضت عرى صبري وأبرمت ضدهاI have undone the bonds of my patience and fastened their opposite.
- هاك عن هذا النبي المصطفىHere, then, is a report of this Chosen Prophet—
- هلموا فعندي للمحبة والهوىCome, all of you—for I have, from love and passion,
- وأتتني الأربعون وماForty came upon me, and I had not
- وأدور مياس العواطف أصبحتAnd a round-eyed youth, with gracefully swaying limbs—
- وإني على بعد الديار وربهاAnd I, despite the remoteness of the dwellings and their lord,
- وجد وسهد ودم يسفكLonging, sleeplessness, and blood being shed.
- وجدت ولا طب لما أنا واجدI have felt passion, and there is no cure for what I feel.
- وشي حكى روضة الآداب مودعةEmbroidery mimicked a garden of letters, harboring
- ولا تزل في سعودMay you abide in felicities
- يا أبا الفضل وابنه وأخاهO Abu al-Fadl—father, son and brother of excellence,
- يا حاسد النعمة في غيرهO you who envy the blessing bestowed on another,
- يا خلي العين والأذنO you, heedless in eye and ear,
- يا ذا المعني بهذا الذكر تسمعهO you concerned with this remembrance that you hear—
- يا سيد الرسل المكين مكانهO master of the messengers, whose station is secure,
- يا شارب الراح في أوقات غفلتهO you who drink wine in your hours of heedlessness,
- يا مدمن الخمر غير آلO you addicted to wine, heedless
- يا مكثرا قاله وقيلهO you who abound in talk and chatter,
- يا من له شيم تملكهO you whose virtues win you
- يا نازحا عني ولوO you who have gone far from me—if only
- يا نائم الطرف عن سهد وعن أرقO you whose eyes sleep, untroubled by vigil or insomnia,
- يا نائم الطرف عن سهدي وعن أرقيO you whose eyes sleep, heedless of my sleeplessness and insomnia,
- يا نسيم الريح يهفو سحراO breeze of the wind, wafting before dawn,
- يدي لك رهن بالمحبة والرضاMy hand is pledged to you in love and contentment;
- يهن الجزيرة منك أي حسامMay the Peninsula be blessed with you—what a sword
