زَرَعتُI planted بِماءِwith the water of الدَّمعِtears فيin القَلبِthe heart رَوضَةًa garden
مِنَof الحُبِّlove أنفاسِيmy breaths بهاby it تَتَميَّزُare distinguished
With the water of tears, I planted in my heart a garden
Of love, by which my breaths are distinguished.
زِنَادُfire-striker الهَوَىpassion بَينَbetween الجَوانِحِthe ribs قَادحٌstriking sparks
وَلاand no أثرٌtrace يَبدُوappears وَلاand no سِرُّsecret يَبرُزُemerges
The flint of passion strikes sparks between my ribs,
Yet no trace appears, and no secret comes to light.
زَلِقتُI stumbled بِحُبِّbecause of love for الحِبِّthe beloved ثمَّthen اختَبرتُهُI tested it
فأعوزَso proved scarce فيهِin it الصَّبرُpatience والوَصلُand union أعوَزُscarcer still
Love for the beloved made me stumble; then I tested it;
So patience was scarce in it, and union scarcer still.
زيادَةُincrease حُبِّlove الرُّوحِthe soul نَقصٌdecrease بِجسمِهِin its body
وقَدand may يُستَقَلُّbe deemed slight الجَوهَرُsubstance المُتَحيَّزُoccupying space
An increase in the soul's love is a decrease in its body,
And substance occupying space may be deemed slight.
زَعَمتُI claimed بأنِّيthat I فِيin هَوَاكَlove for you مُحَقِّقٌgenuine
وَعِندكَand in your view أَنَّيthat I فيin الهَوَىlove مُتَجَوِّزُspeaking figuratively
I claimed to be genuine in my love for you,
Yet in your view, I speak of love figuratively.
زَهِدتُI renounced ولَكِنand yet فيin سِوَاكَwhat is other than you ضَرُورةًof necessity
فمَراآكَfor the sight of you أسنَىmore radiant للفُؤادِfor the heart وأحرَزُand more protective
I renounced—but only what is other than you, of necessity;
For the sight of you is brighter and more protective for the heart.
زَمانِيmy time تَقَضَّىhas passed رَغبَةًlonging وطَماعَةًand craving
ولاand no عِلَّةٌailment تَشفَىis cured ولاand no وَعدَpromise يُنجَزُis fulfilled
My time has passed in longing and craving,
And no ailment is cured, and no promise fulfilled.
زُهِيتُI took pride لِمَحبُوبٍbecause of a beloved أًذِلُّI humble myself لِعِزِّهِbefore his might
وَدِرياقُand the antidote to هَذاthis الذُّلِّabasement ذَاكَthat التَّعزُّزُpride
I took pride in a beloved, before whose might I humble myself,
And the antidote to this abasement is that pride.
زَوَىhe turned aside وَجهَهُhis face عنّيfrom me فَبِتُّso I spent the night كأنّماas though
جِدادُfresh القَناthe lances بَينَbetween الجَوانِحِthe ribs تُركَزُare planted
He turned his face away from me, so I spent the night as though
Fresh lances were being planted between my ribs.
زِمَاميَmy rein فيin كَفَّيهِhis two hands سِراًin secret وجَهرَةًand openly
فَكَيفَso how وحُكمِيand my fate عِندَهُwith him أتَحوَّزُcan I draw away
My rein is in both his hands, in secret and openly;
So how can I draw away, when my fate lies with him?
