  1. أولى الأمور بستر

    شيءٌ ركيك المعاني

    Of all things, most deserving of concealment

    is something feeble in meaning.

  2. فات الطبيب احتيالا

    وفاق طور المعاني

    It outstrips the physician in ingenuity,

    and exceeds the bounds of meaning.

  3. مدح الكرام يُسَاوى

    به نسيب الغواني

    Praise of the noble is matched

    by love poetry to beautiful women.

  4. أيا فلان فأحسن

    ببذله لفلان

    O so-and-so, then be generous

    by bestowing it on so-and-so.
