سَلُواask عُلَمَاءَthe scholars الحُبِّlove عَمَّاabout what أُكِنُّهُI conceal it
فَإنِّيَfor I مِنfrom بُعدِيmy distance وقُربيَand my nearness فيin لَبسِconfusion
Ask the scholars of love about what I conceal.
For I am bewildered by my distance and my nearness.
سَقِيمُsick الهَوىlove بَينَbetween المخَافَةِfear والرَّجاand hope
أرُوحُI go at evening إلىto رَوضٍa garden وأغدُوand I go at morning إلىto رَمسِa grave
Sick with love, between fear and hope,
I go at evening to a garden, and at morning to a grave.
سَبَقَتُI went ahead وَلَكِنِّيbut I طَرِيقاًَa path للمَحَبَّةِto love بَلقَعاًbarren
وَحِيداًalone مِنَamong الجِنسَينِthe two kinds ألجِنَّthe jinn والإنسِand humankind
I went ahead, but along a barren path to love,
Alone among the two kinds: jinn and humankind.
سَبَقتُI went ahead وَلَكِنِّيbut I حُجِبتُI was veiled لِعلَّةٍfor a reason
وَليسَand is not يُنالُis attained الفَوزُsuccess بالثَّمَنِat the price البَخسِpaltry
I went ahead, yet was barred by a veil for a reason;
And success is not attained at a paltry price.
سَألتُكَI asked you وَصلاًunion لَستُI am not أهلاًworthy لبَذلِهِof its bestowal
وَقَدand may تَطمَعُaspire الظَّلماءُdarkness فِيto وَضَحِbrightness الشَّمسِthe sun
I asked you for union, though I am unworthy of its bestowal.
And darkness may aspire to the sun's brightness.
سَبيلُthe way شكاتيmy lament فِيكَover you غيرُnot خَفيَّةٍhidden
فَمنfor from أدمُعِيmy tears نَقشِيmy inscription وَمِنand from وَجنتَيmy two cheeks طِرسيmy parchment
The way of my lament over you is not hidden:
For my inscription comes from my tears, and my parchment from my cheeks.
سَواءٌequal عَلَيَّto me النَّومُsleep واللَّيلُand night والأسَىَand sorrow
فأمسِيso I pass the evening كماas أُضحيI pass the forenoon وأُضحِيand I pass the forenoon كَماas أُمسيI pass the evening
Sleep, night, and sorrow are all the same to me;
So I pass the evening as I pass the forenoon, and the forenoon as the evening.
سُكَوتِيmy silence عَلىover النَّومُsleep واللَّيلُand night والأسَىَand sorrow
فَأمسِيso I pass the evening كماas أُضحيI pass the forenoon وأُضحِيand I pass the forenoon كَماas أُمسيI pass the evening
My silence over sleep, night, and sorrow—
So I pass the evening as I pass the forenoon, and the forenoon as the evening.
سُكَوتِيmy silence عَلىunder ذُلِّhumiliation الحِجابِthe veil تُكلُّمٌspeech
إذاwhen نَطقَتspeaks حَالِيmy state فَلاthen no صَمتَsilence للحِسِّfor the senses
My silence under the humiliation of the veil is speech.
When my state speaks, the senses cannot be silent.
سَكَبتُI poured out فُؤادِيmy heart أدمُعاًas tears وسَفَحتُهُand I spilled it
لَعَلَّperhaps غَداًtomorrow يُعدِيwill lend aid عَلىagainst اليَومٍِtoday والأمسِand yesterday
I poured out my heart as tears and spilled it,
Perhaps tomorrow will aid me against today and yesterday.
سَمَحتُI gave freely بِنَفسِيwith my soul للهَوىto love واحتسَبتُهاand I reckoned it a sacrifice
علَيكَfor your sake وَلولاand were it not for أنتَyou لَمdid not أحتَسِبI reckon as a sacrifice نَفسِيmy soul
I freely gave my soul to love and reckoned it a sacrifice
For your sake; but for you, I would not have reckoned my soul a sacrifice.
