Whatever intoxicates the mind is wine;

and wine, to the discerning, is fire.

جماع إثم غَولٌ لوفدٍ

بأس وبؤس ضر وضرّ

بأس وبؤس ضر وضرّ

The sum of sin, a ghoul to every company:

affliction and misery, harm and hurt.

يا شارب الخمر مستسراً

يا شارب الخمر مستسراً

ما دون ربِّ العباد سرّ

ما دون ربِّ العباد سرّ

O you who drink wine in secret,

no secret is hidden from the Lord of all people.

لا تسدل السرّ ما على من

لا تسدل السرّ ما على من

يعصي إله السَّماء ستر

يعصي إله السَّماء ستر

Do not draw secrecy down like a curtain: over one who

disobeys the God of heaven, there is no veil.

واذكر إذا ما الحياة ولَّت

واذكر إذا ما الحياة ولَّت

وحان موت وتمَّ عمر

وحان موت وتمَّ عمر

Remember when life turns away,

when death draws near and a lifetime ends;

وجاء موت وجاء قبر

وجاء موت وجاء قبر

وجاء بعث وجاء حشر

وجاء بعث وجاء حشر

when death comes and the grave comes,

when resurrection comes and the gathering comes,

واجتمع الناسُ في صعيدٍ

واجتمع الناسُ في صعيدٍ

والنَّهيُ نهي والأمر أمر

والنَّهيُ نهي والأمر أمر

and all people assemble on one open plain;

when prohibition is absolute, and command is absolute;

والنار قد سُعِّرت وقالت

والنار قد سُعِّرت وقالت

هل من مزيد فقيل فقيل صبر

هل من مزيد فقيل فقيل صبر

when the Fire has been fiercely kindled and says,

“Is there any more?” Then it is said—said again: “Endure.”

هناك تلقى لذيذ ما قد

هناك تلقى لذيذ ما قد

جنيت من الإثموهو مرّ

جنيت من الإثموهو مرّ

There you will taste the sweetness of what you have

reaped in sin—yet it is bitter.

أيُّ مقام إن لم يكن من

أيُّ مقام إن لم يكن من

غافر كلِّ الذُّنوب غفر

غافر كلِّ الذُّنوب غفر

What refuge remains, if there comes no

forgiveness from the Forgiver of every sin?
