متىwhen تَنجَليwill lift عَنfrom نَاظِرٍa beholder لَوعَةُburning anguish الهَوىof love
وأحشَاؤهُand his entrails فِيin أدمُعٍtears تَتَضَرَّمُblaze
When shall love’s anguish clear from a beholder’s sight,
When will love's burning anguish lift from a beholder,
while his innermost parts blaze amid tears?
While his entrails blaze amid tears?
مَهالِكُthe perils هَذاthis الحُبٍِّlove غَيرُnot خَفِيَّةٍhidden
وفيand in الحُبِّlove يَعشَىgrows dim of sight النَّاظِرُthe beholder المتوسِّمُdiscerning
The perils of this love are not hidden;
The perils of this love are not hidden;
in love, even the discerning beholder goes blind.
And in love the discerning beholder's sight grows dim.
محَاerased الدَّمعُtears رَسمَthe outline الجِسمِof the body إلاّexcept بَقيَّةًa remnant
كَماas لاَحَappeared سَطرٌa line of script بالمَدامِعwith tears مُعجَمُdotted
Tears erased the body’s outline, save for a remnant,
Tears have erased the body's outline, save a remnant,
like a line of script appearing, dotted with tears.
Like a line of script appearing, dotted with tears.
مَدَىthe goal الحُبِّof love لاnot يزدَادُincreases إلاَّexcept تَنائياًin remoteness
عَلىdespite أنَّthe fact that قَلبيmy heart فِيover المَدىthe distance لَيسَdoes not يَسأمُgrow weary
Love’s course increases only in remoteness,
Love's goal only grows more distant,
though across that distance my heart never wearies.
Though my heart does not weary over that distance.
مُحِبٌّa lover لمَحبوبٍof a beloved إذاwhen ماever (emphasis) تَرَكتُهُI leave him
تأخَّرتُI hold back خَوفاًin fear والهَوىand love يتَقَدَّمُadvances
I am a lover of a beloved: whenever I leave him,
I am a lover of a beloved; whenever I leave him,
I hold back in fear, while passion presses forward.
I hold back in fear, while love advances.
مَعِيwith me كُلَّevery حينٍmoment بانَhe parts عَنّيfrom me أوor دَناdraws near
فَقَلبيso my heart بِسلُوانٍwith solace بهِin him مُتكتَمُconcealing
He is with me every moment, whether far from me or near,
He is with me at every moment, whether he parts from me or draws near;
for my heart keeps hidden any thought of forgetting him.
So my heart keeps secret the solace it finds in him.
مُرادُكَyour desire مِنfrom قَلبِيmy heart مُراديَmy desire كُلُّهُall of it
وأسلَمُand the safest أربابِof the masters القُلوبِof hearts المُسَلِّمُthe one who surrenders
What you desire of my heart is the whole of my desire,
What you desire of my heart is all that I desire,
and safest among the masters of hearts is he who surrenders.
And the safest among the masters of hearts is the one who surrenders.
مُحالٌimpossible صَلاحِيmy well-being إنif فَقَدتُكَI lose you لَمحَةًfor an instant
ومَنand whoever غابَhas vanished عَنهُfrom him بَدرُهُhis full moon فَهوthen he مُظلِمُis in darkness
My well-being is impossible if I lose you for an instant;
My well-being is impossible if I lose you for an instant;
whoever’s full moon is absent from him dwells in darkness.
And he whose full moon has vanished from him is in darkness.
مُحالُthe impossibility الهوىof love فِيin الرُّوحthe soul رَوحٌrelief وراحَةٌand rest
فَيشقىso suffers بهِthrough it جِسميmy body ورُوحيand my soul يُنَعَّمُis granted bliss
The impossibility of love is, within the soul, refreshment and repose;
Love's impossibility is relief and rest within the soul,
through it my body suffers, while my spirit is blessed.
So my body suffers through it, while my soul enjoys bliss.
مُنايَmy wishes مُنَاجَاتيmy intimate communion وَفِيهاand in it مَنِيَّتيmy death
كَذلكَthus هذاthis الحبُّlove شَهدٌhoney وعَلقَمُand bitter colocynth
My desire is intimate converse—and in it lies my death;
My intimate communion is my desire, and in it lies my death;
thus is this love both honey and bitter colocynth.
Thus this love is honey and bitter colocynth.
