يا خليّ العين والأذنِ

يا خليّ العين والأذنِ

لاهياً في السرّ والعلنِ

لاهياً في السرّ والعلنِ

O you, heedless in eye and ear,

distracted in private and in public,

أيقظ القلب اللجوج فقد

أيقظ القلب اللجوج فقد

أثّرت فيه يد المحنِ

أثّرت فيه يد المحنِ

Awaken the stubborn heart, for

the hand of tribulations has left its mark upon it.

عامل المولى بنعمته

عامل المولى بنعمته

من أيادي فعله الحسنِ

من أيادي فعله الحسنِ

Deal with the Lord through His bounty,

drawn from the favors of His gracious deeds.

وقبيح أن تضنّ وقد

وقبيح أن تضنّ وقد

مُلئت كفَّاك بالمنن

مُلئت كفَّاك بالمنن

And it is shameful to be miserly, when

your two palms have been filled with blessings.

فزكاةُ المال بذلُكَهُ

فزكاةُ المال بذلُكَهُ

وزكاة الصَّوم للبدن

وزكاة الصَّوم للبدن

For wealth is purified by your giving it away,

and fasting brings purification to the body.

ولعاشوراء مرتبةٌ

ولعاشوراء مرتبةٌ

شُهرت في سالف الزّمن

شُهرت في سالف الزّمن

And Ashura holds a rank

made renowned in times long past.

هو يومٌ لم يزل أبداً

هو يومٌ لم يزل أبداً

صومه من آكد السُّنن

صومه من آكد السُّنن

It is a day on which, ever and always,

fasting is among the most emphatically recommended practices.

فاغتنم إن كنت متجراً

فاغتنم إن كنت متجراً

خَلَساً من راحة المحن

خَلَساً من راحة المحن

So seize, if you are a trader,

whatever can be snatched from the palm of tribulations.

فكأن الموت مطلع

فكأن الموت مطلع

وكأن العيش لم يكن

وكأن العيش لم يكن

For it is as though death were looking on,

and as though life had never been.

ترتجي فوزاً وهل أحدٌ

ترتجي فوزاً وهل أحدٌ

نال ما يرجو بلا ثمن

نال ما يرجو بلا ثمن

You hope for success—but has anyone

attained what he hopes for without a price?

إن من ضاعت بغيَّتُهُ

إن من ضاعت بغيَّتُهُ

لكثير الغَبنِ والغَبَنِ

لكثير الغَبنِ والغَبَنِ

Indeed, one whose aim comes to nothing

surely incurs great loss and grievous errors of judgment.
