وبسط نداك ليس إلى انقباض

The proof of your eminence admits no objection,

and the outspread reach of your bounty never contracts.

وفيك محاسنٌ لفظاً ومعنى

وفيك محاسنٌ لفظاً ومعنى

نهضت بعبئها أيَّ انتهاض

نهضت بعبئها أيَّ انتهاض

In you are excellences, in word and meaning;

you have shouldered their burden—how mightily!

يقر الحاسدون بها ولَم لا

يقر الحاسدون بها ولَم لا

وجدُّك شاهدٌ ونداك قاضي

وجدُّك شاهدٌ ونداك قاضي

The envious acknowledge them—and why not?

Your good fortune bears witness, and your bounty is judge.

بقيةُ منجبيكَ أباً وجداً

بقيةُ منجبيكَ أباً وجداً

وبالباقين تُعتبر المواضي

وبالباقين تُعتبر المواضي

You are the surviving heir of your noble progenitors, father and grandfather;

by those who remain, those gone before are judged.

وأورثهم وقد كثروا وطابوا

وأورثهم وقد كثروا وطابوا

كرث الزهر أنفاس الرياض

كرث الزهر أنفاس الرياض

And he endowed them—many and noble as they were—

as flowers inherit the gardens’ fragrant breaths [reading uncertain].

فهذا النور من تلك المشاكي

فهذا النور من تلك المشاكي

وهذا النهر من تلك الحياض

وهذا النهر من تلك الحياض

So this light comes from those lamp-niches,

and this river from those pools.

أتاني عن أبي الفضل ارتحالٌ

أتاني عن أبي الفضل ارتحالٌ

ثناني بين وجد وارتماض

ثناني بين وجد وارتماض

News of Abu al-Fadl’s departure reached me,

leaving me bowed between longing and burning anguish.

فلم نحن الضلوع على سلوٍ

فلم نحن الضلوع على سلوٍ

ولم نطو الجفونَ على اغتماض

ولم نطو الجفونَ على اغتماض

So we have not folded our ribs around consolation,

nor folded our eyelids shut.

فراقُ النفس ليس عن اختيار

فراقُ النفس ليس عن اختيار

وفقدُ الروح ليس عن التَّراضي

وفقدُ الروح ليس عن التَّراضي

Parting from the soul is not by choice,

and losing the spirit is not by mutual consent.

ومن يعتض خليلاً من خليلٍ

ومن يعتض خليلاً من خليلٍ

فما عُوضتُ خِلاً من عياض

فما عُوضتُ خِلاً من عياض

Though one may find a friend in place of a friend,

no friend has been given me in place of Iyad.

ولي دَين بلقيته ولكن

ولي دَين بلقيته ولكن

أرى الأيام تمطل بالتقاضي

أرى الأيام تمطل بالتقاضي

A meeting with him is a debt owed me, but

I see the days delaying payment when I demand my due.

أبا الفضل الزمان كما تراه

أبا الفضل الزمان كما تراه

يقلبُ في انبرام وانتقاض

يقلبُ في انبرام وانتقاض

Abu al-Fadl, time, as you see it,

turns between binding fast and unraveling.

رضيتُ عن الفراق وفيه سخط

رضيتُ عن الفراق وفيه سخط

وإني عن فراقك غير راض

وإني عن فراقك غير راض

I have accepted separation, though it holds displeasure,

yet I am not content with separation from you.

فسر متمهلاً وارجع سريعاً

فسر متمهلاً وارجع سريعاً

كصقر في علو وانقضاض

كصقر في علو وانقضاض

So travel unhurriedly, and return swiftly,

like a falcon in ascent and downward swoop.

وعش في غبطةٍ وعُلاً ومجدٍ

وعش في غبطةٍ وعُلاً ومجدٍ

وسعدك ذو انقياد وارتياض

وسعدك ذو انقياد وارتياض

And live in happiness, eminence, and glory,

with your good fortune obedient and tame.

متى صَحَّت دعاوى كلِّ صعبٍ

متى صَحَّت دعاوى كلِّ صعبٍ

بتزكية من الحدق المراض

بتزكية من الحدق المراض

When have the claims of any untamable one been upheld

by the testimony of languishing eyes?
