ألَمhas it not? يأنِbe time أَنthat يَروىhave its thirst quenched فؤادُthe heart of مُتَيَّمٍone enslaved by love
تفيضُoverflow مَاقيthe inner corners of جَفنهِhis eyelid وَهوَwhile he يَظمَأُthirsts
Has the time not come for a lovesick heart to quench its thirst?
The corners of his eyes overflow, yet he thirsts.
أصابَتهُstruck him عَينٌan eye أغمَدَتsheathed نَصلَthe blade of وَصلِهِhis union
وقَلبُand the heart of الهَويthe lover مَنwhoever كانَhe may be قَلبٌa heart مُرَزَّأstricken with loss
An eye struck him, sheathing the blade of his union.
And a lover's heart, whoever he may be, is a grief-stricken heart.
أُحِبُّI love حَبيباa beloved لاnot أُسَمَّيهِI name him هَيبَةًout of awe
وَكتمُand concealment of الهَوىlove للقَلبِfor the heart أنكىmore hurtful وأنكأُand more wounding
I love a beloved whom I do not name, out of awe.
And concealing love is more hurtful and more wounding to the heart.
أغارُI am jealous عَليهِover him مِنof هَوايَmy passion وكيفَand how لاnot
أغارُI am jealous عَلَيهِover him مِنof سَوايَanyone other than me وأبرَأُand I recover
I am jealous over him even of my own passion—how could I not
Be jealous over him of anyone else, and be healed?
أَبِيتُI spend the night أُعانيI suffer فيهِfor him حَرَّthe heat of جَوانِحِيmy ribs
وَبينَand between جُفُونيmy eyelids مَدمَعٌa stream of tears لَيسَdoes not يَرقأُcease flowing
I spend the night suffering for him the burning within my ribs.
And between my eyelids flows a stream of tears that will not cease.
أراهُI see him بقَلبٍwith a heart كُلَّevery يَومٍday ولَيلَةٍand night
وإنand though كنتُI am عَنaway from وِردِthe watering place of الوِصالِunion أُحَلأُI am driven away
I see him with my heart every day and night,
Though I am driven away from the watering place of union.
أتَانِيcame to me كِتابٌa letter مِنهُfrom him قُمتُI attended بِحَقِّهِto its due
فَهاso here أنَاI أبكيI weep مَاas much as استَطَعتُI can وأقرأُand I read
A letter came to me from him; I paid it its due:
So here I am, weeping as much as I can and reading.
أياO مَنone who هَواهُlove for him حَلَّhas lodged in سَمعِيmy hearing ونَاظِريand my eye
وَقَلبيand my heart فَماليso I have no مِنهُfrom it مَنجَىًescape ومَلجَأُand refuge
O you whose love has lodged in my hearing and my eye
And my heart—so I have no escape or refuge from it.
أَغِثنيrescue me بِيَومٍwith a day مِنof لقائِكَmeeting you واحدٍone
فإنّيfor I بيومٍwith a day منof لقائِكَmeeting you أجزَأُI am content
Rescue me with a single day of meeting you,
For one day of meeting you is enough for me.
أُعلِّلُI console نَفسيmyself مِنكَfrom you بالوَصلِwith union والرِّضَاand favor
ومَنand who ليfor me بهِwith it وَهوَand it is النَّعيمُbliss المُهَنَّأُuntroubled
I console myself with hopes of union with you and your favor.
And who will secure that for me? It is untroubled bliss.
