- أبا الفضل كيف تناسيتنيAbu al-Fadl, how could you pretend to forget me,
- أبا المجد كم لك من طالبO Abu al-Majd, how many a seeker you have
- أبا حسن أنت أهل الجميلO Abu Hasan, you are worthy of noble deeds;

- أبعدك أتقي نوب الزمانAfter you, shall I fear the calamities of time?
- أبلغ أبا الفضل الذي شهدتTell Abu al-Fadl, whose excellence is attested
- أتاني أن المجد عني سائلNews reached me that glory was asking about me,
- أترى أبصره مثلي القدحDo you suppose the goblet saw him as I did,
- أترى الهلال أنار ضوء جبينهDo you think the crescent lit the radiance of his brow,
- أتطمع في الود من زاهدDo you hope for love from an ascetic?
- أحتى إلى العلياء يا خطب تطمحDo you aspire even to the heights, O calamity?
- أخلاقه أحلى من الأمنHis character is sweeter than security,
- أدنى اشتياقي أن أبيت عليلاThe least of my longing is to pass the night ill,
- إذا عز نفسي عن هواك قصورهاIf holding back from loving you defeats my soul,
- إذا لم يكن من حادث الدهر موئلIf there is no refuge from time's calamity,
- إذا ما ارتاح للراح الندامىWhen the drinking companions delight in wine,
- أراني من روعات بينك نازلاI find myself, from the terrors of parting from you, plunged
- أروح وقلبي عنك ليس برائحI depart, yet my heart does not depart from you.
- أرى العلياء واضحة السبيلI see the eminent path clearly,
- أسعد الله بالمسير وأعطىMay God grant good fortune on the journey, and grant
- أسوم الجباب فلا خزهاI bid on robes, yet as for their silk,
- أصون لساني والجنان يذالI guard my tongue while my heart is abased.
- أطاعك فيما تروم القدرFate has yielded to you in all that you seek;
- أظن الدهر جاءك مستثيراI think Time has come to you seeking to provoke,
- أعطى الشباب من الآراب ما طلباHe gave youth the desires it sought,
- أفيض دموع أم سيول تموجIs it a flood of tears, or torrents surging?
- أقول لدهر ضامني بعد عزةI say to Time, which wronged me after honor,
- أقول واليوم بهيم خطبهI say, and today is an inarticulate day, its discourse gloomy
- ألا أيها العضب الذي ليس نابياO keen sword that never fails to cut,
- ألا فتى من صروف الدهر يحمينيIs there no young man to shield me from the vicissitudes of Time?
- ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلةAh, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night
- ألا من مبلغ عني علياAh, who will convey to Ali on my behalf—
- ألا هكذا تستهل البدورBehold, this is how full moons rise:
- ألا هكذا فليحرز الحمد والأجراBehold, thus let one win praise and reward,
- ألا يا محرقي بالنار مهلاAh, you who burn me with fire, be gentle!
- ألم أك للقوافي الغر خدناWas I not an intimate of radiant rhymes,
- ألم تك للملوك الغر تاجاWere you not a crown for illustrious kings,
- أليس من العجائب أن مثليIs it not a wonder that one like me,
- أما أبو اليمن فلتفخر به اليمنAs for Abu al-Yumn, let Yemen take pride in him,
- أما الزمان فلم يزل ينحيAs for Time, it has never ceased to assail
- أما والهوى يوم استقل فريقهاIndeed, by love, on the day her company departed,
- أما وعتاق العيس لو وجدت وجديBy the noble pale camels! If they felt my anguish,
- أمد الله ظلك يا سعيدMay God extend your shade, O Sa'id,
- أمعذبي بالنار سل بجوانحيWould you torment me with fire? Ask my ribs—
- أمن الملك حسبك من أمينO Trustee of the Kingdom, what a trusted guardian you are!
- أمن الملك حسبك من أمينO Amin al-Mulk, what a worthy trustee you are!
- أمني النفس وصلا من سعادI promise myself union with Su'ad,
- أنا والندى سيفان فيI and generosity are two swords in
- أنت للمسلمين حصن وحرزYou are a fortress and a refuge for the Muslims,
- أهدى الأمير إليك خير تحيةThe emir has sent you the finest greeting,
- أو ما ترى قلق الغدير كأنماDo you not see the pool’s restless motion, as though
- أيا بين ما سلطت إلا على ظلميO separation, you were unleashed only to wrong me.
- ايا ما أحسن المنثورAh, how beautiful the stock flower,
- أيا ناهض الملك أي الثناءO upholder of the kingdom, what praise
- أيام دهرك كلها أعيادAll the days of your life are festivals,
- ببهاء وجهك تشرق الأنوارWith the radiance of your face the lights shine bright,
- بقاؤك أوفى اقتراح الأمانيIn your continued life lies the fullest fulfillment of wishes;
- بكيتك للبين قبل الحمامI wept for you at parting, even before death;
- بنفسي على قربه النازحMy life as ransom for him, distant though near,
- بنفسي من تضيء به الدياجيMy soul be ransom for one through whom the dark nights shine,
- تجاف عن العفاة ولا ترعهمLeave those seeking gifts alone, and do not frighten them.
- تحراني الزمان بكل خطبTime has singled me out for every calamity,
- تغيرتم عن عهدكم آل كاملYou have departed from your pledge, O house of Kamil;
- ثمر كأن به الذيFruit, as though it bears what
- جرى النهر من شوق إلى ما حل الثرىThe river flowed out of longing for the parched earth,
- جرى لك بالتوفيق أيمن طائرThe most auspicious bird has flown for you, bearing good fortune,
- خذا من صبا نجد أمانا لقلبهYou two, obtain safe-conduct from Najd's east wind for his heart;
- خليلي إن لم تسعدا فذارنيMy two friends, if you will not console me, then leave me;
- خيار حين تنسبه خيارA cucumber, when you attribute to it being a cucumber
- دار يدور بها السرورA house where joy goes round,
- دعاني الأمير فلبيتهThe emir summoned me, so I answered him.
- دعتني حاجة فبعثت وفداA need called me, so I sent a delegation,
- رأيتك لما شمت برقك خلباWhen I watched your lightning, I found you all flash and no rain;
- سأشكر ما مننت به ومثليI shall give thanks for what you bestowed; and one like me
- سعدت بك الأقمار جارا فلتفزThe moons are blessed to have you as a neighbor; may you prosper
- سقاني بعينيه شبه التيWith his eyes he gave me a draught like that
- سقوه كأس فرقتهم دهاقاThey gave him a brimming cup of their parting,
- سلوا سيف ألحاظه الممتشقAsk the unsheathed sword of his glances:
- سواي لمن لم يعشق المجد عاشقSomeone other than me loves whoever does not love glory;
- سوى باكيك من ينهى العذولNone but the bereaved will forbid bereavement,
- شرفا لمجدك بانيا ومقوضاHonor to your glory, whether building or dismantling,
- صرت بين الصادين يا بن المجليYou have ended up between the two ṣāds, O son of al-Mujallī,
- صروف المنايا ليس يودي قتيلهاDeath's vicissitudes—their victim does not perish;
- طربت وما كان ذاك الطربI was stirred to rapture, but that rapture was not
- عتادك أن تشن بها مغاراYou are equipped to launch a raid with them;
- عسى باخل بلقاء يجودPerhaps one who begrudges a meeting will be generous.
- عشت للمجد أطول الأعمارMay you live for Glory the longest of lifetimes,
- قد توالت علي منك أياديFavors from you have come upon me one after another,
- قد عدتني فشفيت من سقميYou have cured me and healed my sickness,
- قل للعميد عميد الملك إن لهTell the chief, Amid al-Mulk, that he has
- قلت للساقي وقد طاف بهاI said to the cupbearer, as he passed it round—
- قولا لفخراور قول امرئYou two, tell Fakhrawar the words of a man
- كم توالت يا سعيد بن عليHow many have followed one another, O Saʿīd ibn ʿAlī—
- كم ذا التجنب والتجنيHow oft this shunning, this offense!
- كم سما لي بحسن رأيك جدHow often my fortune has risen through your sound judgment,
- كنت أدعوك في مداواة حاليI used to call upon you to cure my plight
- لاح الهلال فما يكاد يرىThe crescent appeared, yet can scarcely be seen,
- لاح الهلال كما تعوج مرهفاThe crescent gleamed, slender as it curved;
- لعمر أبي العطاء لئن تولىBy the life of Abu al-‘Ata’, though he has departed,
- لعمري لئن شرفتني بصنيعةBy my life, if indeed you have honored me with a kindness
- لقد أصبحت نعماك عندي مشيدةYour bounty has indeed become, with me, a herald
- لقد جاوزت فيك مقدارهاThey have indeed overstepped their bounds in striking you—
- لقد غال نبلك يا نابلIndeed, your arrows have dealt death, O archer,
- لك الخير قد أنحى علي زمانيMay good be yours! My time has assailed me,
- لله يوم سقانا اللهو والمطرWhat a wondrous day! Revelry and rain gave us drink
- لم يبق عندي ما يباع بحبةI have nothing left that's worth a single date
- لنا كل يوم هناء جديدEach day we have new joy,
- لنا مجلس ما فيه للهم مدخلWe have a gathering where sorrow finds no entrance,
- لو كنت شاهد عبرتي يوم النقاHad you witnessed my tears on the day at al-Naqa,
- ليت الذي قلبي به مغرمWould that the one my heart adores
- لئن عداني زمان عن لقائكمThough time has kept me from meeting you,
- ما طلعت شمس من المغربNo sun has risen from the west
- ما على العذال من سقميWhat claim do the reproachers have against me because of my sickness?
- ما على فضلك ذا من مفضلNo generous giver surpasses this bounty of yours,
- ما لأبي اليمن علينا يدAbu al-Yumn holds no favor over us;

- متى أنا طاعن قلب الفجاجWhen shall I pierce the heart of the mountain passes,
- محا الدهر آثار الكرام فلم يدعTime erased the traces of the noble, leaving nothing
- مليت بدرا تهناه وضرغاماYou have been granted a full moon—delight in him—and a lion,
- من كان مثل أبي علي فلينلWhoever is like Abu Ali, let him reach
- مهلا بني الصوفي إنكمGently, sons of al-Sufi; indeed, to you,
- مولاي تصبر عن أديبكMy lord, can you bear to be without your man of letters,
- نبي العلى والندى ما لي صفت وضفتO prophet of eminence and bounty, why have they grown pure and abundant for me—
- نشدتك لا تعدم الراح راحاI implore you: do not deprive the hands of wine,
- نفضت يدي من الآمال لماI shook my hand free of hopes when
- هبوا طيفكم أعدى على النأي مسراهGrant that your phantom's nightly journey has overcome distance;
- هو الرسم لو أغنى الوقوف على الرسمIt is the trace—if only standing at the trace could avail.
- هي الديار فعج في رسمها العاريThese are the dwellings; turn aside among their bare traces,
- وافى كتابك أسنى ما يعود بهYour letter arrived—the most splendid thing brought back
- وإني للزمان لذو نضالAnd indeed I do battle with time,
- وكنت إذا ما رابني الدهر مرةAnd whenever time troubled me on some occasion—
- ويعتادني ذكراك في كل حالةAnd the memory of you revisits me in every state,
- ويوم أخذنا به فرصةAnd a day on which we seized an opportunity
- يا أيها النجم ما وفيته لقباO star, I have not done you justice with that title;
- يا بن الحسين وأنت من غرس الندىO son of al-Husayn, you are he in whom generosity was planted,
- يا بن من شاد المعالي جودهO son of him whose bounty built the heights of honor,
- يا حسنه قمرا وأنت سماؤهHow beautiful he is as a moon, and you his sky!
- يا حسنها صفراء ذات تلهبOh, how lovely it is—yellow, with a fiery glow!
- يا دهر قد عديت عنك طلابيO Time, I have turned my quest away from you,
- يا سيد الحكام هل من وقفةO lord of rulers, is there a moment's pause
- يا فرحة البيت العتيق إذاOh, the joy of the Ancient House when
- يا قبر ما للمجد عندك فاحتفظO grave, what belongs to glory is in your keeping; guard well
- يا ليت أن يدي شلت ولم يرنيOh, would that my hand had been paralyzed, and I had not been seen
- يا مفلت الظبية الغناء من يدهO you who let the singing gazelle slip through his hands
- يا مؤذيا بالنار جسم محبهO you who torment your lover’s body with fire,
- يا موقد النار الذي لم يأل فيO kindler of the fire, who has spared no effort in
- يا نسيم الصبا الولوع بوجديO east-wind breeze, enamored of my longing,
- يابن علي ما أضيعت علىO son of Ali, no lofty honors have been lost;
- يحتاج في الشعر إلى طلاوهIn poetry, charm is needed;
- يد لك عندي لا تؤدى حقوقهاYou have done me a kindness whose due cannot be repaid
- يقيني يقيني حادثات النوائبMy certainty protects me from the onsets of calamity,
