لِلهِto God (in admiration) يَوْمٌa day سَقاناgave us drink اللَّهْوُrevelry وَالْمَطَرُand the rain
بِهِon it وَأُحْمِدَand was found praiseworthy مِنّاfrom us الْوِرْدُthe coming to drink وَالصَّدَرُand the departure
What a wondrous day! Revelry and rain gave us drink
The day when leisure and rain quenched our thirst
on it, and our coming and going were praised.
Is blessed and so are the roses and my joy
يَوْمٌa day كَفاناsufficed us مِنَof اللَّذّاتِthe pleasures أَنَّthat بِهِon it
لَمْnot تَطْلُعِrise الشَّمْسُthe sun حَتّىuntil زارَناvisited us الْقَمَرُthe moon
A day—it was pleasure enough for us that on it
A day that sufficed us from pleasures, for in it
the sun did not rise until the moon visited us.
The sun did not rise until the moon visited us
فِيin قامَةِthe stature of الْغُصْنِthe bough إِلاّexcept اَنَّهُthat he is رَشَأٌa young gazelle
فِيin طَلْعَةِthe countenance of الْبَدْرِthe full moon إِلاّexcept أَنَّهُthat he is بَشَرُa human being
With a bough’s stature, yet a young gazelle;
In the stature of the branch he is but foliage
with the full moon’s countenance, yet a human being.
In the rising of the full moon he is but a harbinger
زِيارَةٌa visit لَيْتَwould that يَوْمِيmy day لاnot يَكُونُbe لَهُfor it
فِيهاduring it عِشاءٌan evening وَلَيْلِيand my night ماnot لَهُfor it سَحَرُthe hour before dawn
A visit! Would that my day had no
Would that my day which hosted it would never end
evening during it, and my night no dawn.
That in it my night has no dawn, and my evening no supper
