خَلِيلَيَّmy two dear friends إِنْif لَمْnot تُسْعِداyou two give comfort فَذارنِيthen leave me, you two
وَلاand do not تَحْسَباyou two suppose وَجْدِيmy anguish الذِيthat which تَجِدانِyou two perceive
My two friends, if you will not console me, then leave me;
My two beloveds, if you don't make me happy, leave me alone
And do not think my anguish is what you two perceive.
And don't consider my passion that you both find
خُذاtake, you two مِنْfrom شُجُونِيmy sorrows ماwhat يَدُلُّpoints عَلَىto الْجَوىburning heartache
فَماfor ... not النّارُthe fire إِلاّexcept تَحْتَbeneath كُلِّevery دُخانِsmoke
Take from my sorrows what points to burning heartache,
Take from my agonies what indicates my love sickness
For beneath every plume of smoke lies fire.
For fire exists only under smoke
أَماتَkilled الْهَوىlove صَبْرِيmy patience وَأَحْياand revived صَبابَتِيmy ardent longing
فَهاso here أناI مَغْلُوبٌovercome كَماas تَرَيَانِyou two see
Love killed my patience and revived my yearning;
My patience killed passion, yet revived my youthfulness
So here I am, overcome, as you two see.
So you see I'm defeated, as you both notice
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat مَنْthe one who أَهْواهُI love him عايَنَwitnessed لُوْعَتِيmy torment
لُعَنَّفَنِيhe would rebuke me فِيfor حُبِّهِlove for him وَلَحانِيand reproach me
And if the one I love were to witness my torment,
And if my loved one saw my torment
He would rebuke me for loving him and reproach me.
He would reproach me for his love and be gentle with me
تَحَمَّلْتُI have borne مِنْof جُوْرِthe cruelty of الأَحِبَّةِloved ones ماwhat كَفىsufficed
فَلاso let ... not يَبْهَظَنِّيweigh me down الْيَوْمَtoday جَوْرُthe injustice of زَمانِيmy times
I have borne enough of the cruelty of loved ones;
I've endured the injustice of lovers, enough
So let the injustice of my times not weigh me down today.
So let not today's injustice of time upset me
وكَيْفَand how احْتفِاليmy concern بِالزَّمانِwith time وَصَرْفِهِand its vicissitudes
وَماand not زالَceased فَخْرُthe Pride الْمُلْكِof the Realm مِنْهُagainst it أَمانِيmy protection
And how should I care about time and its vicissitudes,
And how can I celebrate time and its turns
When Fakhr al-Mulk has always been my protection against it?
While the pride of kingdom still desires from it
عَلِقْتُI cling إِذاwhen ماever رُمْتُI seek عَدَّcounting كِرامِهِits noble men
بِأَوَّلِto the first مَنْthe one who يُثْنىare bent عَلَيهِfor him بَنانِيmy fingers
Whenever I seek to count its noble men, I cling
Whenever I aim to count its generosities
To the first for whom my fingers bend in counting:
I cling to the first one praised with my ode
بِأَزْهَرَto a radiant man وَضَّاحِbright الْجَبينِof brow مُهَذَّبٍrefined
جَمِيلِgraceful الْحَياin modesty ماضٍresolute أَغَرَّillustrious هِجانِof pure stock
To a radiant man, bright of brow and refined,
With the brightest, most radiant forehead, well-mannered
Gracefully modest, resolute, illustrious, of pure stock.
Beautiful, enchanting, who roused passions
إِذاwhen آلُthe house of عَمّارٍAmmar أَظَلَّكَcasts shade over you عِزُّهُمْtheir glory
فَغَيْرُكَthen someone other than you مَنْthe one who يَخْشىfears يَدَthe hand of الْحَدَثانِmisfortune
When the glory of Ammar's house casts its shade over you,
When the protection of the Umayyads shades you
Then someone other than you fears misfortune's hand.
Who else besides you fears the hand of time?
هُمُthey الْقَوْمُthe people إِلاَّexcept أَنَّthat بَيْنَamong بُيُوتِهِمْtheir homes

They are the men—save that among their homes
They are the people, though between their homes
Guest-fare is held cheap, but the neighbor is not dishonored.
Homelands are disgraced while neighbors are not
هُمُthey أَطْلَقُواset free بِالْجُودِthrough generosity كُلَّevery مَصَفَّدٍshackled person

They freed every shackled man through generosity,
They unleashed with generosity every shackled one
Just as they made every tongue speak in praise.
As they freed with praise every tongue
لَهُمْfor them بِكthrough you فَخْرَO Pride الْمُلْكِof the Realm فَخْرٌglory عَلَىabove الْوَرىhumankind

Through you, Fakhr al-Mulk, they have glory above all mankind;
Through you they pride themselves over all people
In your two palms it has a raiser and a builder.
You have a comrade in your ease and structure

عَلِيٌّAli وَعَمّارٌand Ammar بِهاin it الْقَمَرانِthe two moons
Stars of eminence in a sky of noble deeds;
The stars of glory in the sky of virtues
Ali and Ammar are the two moons within it.
Are Ali and Amar their two moons
هَنيئاًjoyous لَكَfor you الأَيّامُthe days فَالدَّهْرُfor time كُلُّهُall of it
إِذاif وَقاكَkeeps you safe اللهُGod دَهْرُa time of تَهانِfelicitations
May your days be joyous, for all of time,
Congratulations on your days, so all time
If God keeps you safe, is a time of felicitations.
When God protects you, time is disgraced
لِذاfor this الْخَلْقِhumankind عِيدٌa festival فِيat أَوانٍa season يَزُورُهُمْvisits them
وَأَنْتَand you لَناfor us عِيدٌa festival بِكُلِّat every أَوانِseason
These people have a festival that visits them in its season,
For people, feast comes in a time they visit
And you are a festival for us at every season.
While you’re a feast for us at all times
فَحَسْبِيso it suffices me مِنَof النَّعْماءِblessing أَنَّكَthat you وَالنَّدىand generosity
خَلِيلاًtwo close friends صَفاءِof pure affection لَيْسَnot يَفْتَرِقانِthey two part
So it is blessing enough for me that you and generosity
It’s enough favor for me that you and dew
Are two friends in pure affection, never parting.
Are intimate, pure, never to part
إِذاwhen رُمْتُI seek شِعْرِيmy verse فِيin عُلاكَyour greatness أَطاعَنِيit obeys me
وَإِنْand if رُضْتُI train فِكْرِيmy thought فِيabout سِواكَanyone other than you عَصانيit disobeys me
When I seek to praise your greatness in my verse, it obeys me;
When I aim my poetry at your eminence, it obeys me
And if I train my thought on anyone but you, it disobeys me.
Yet if I aim my thoughts at anyone but you, they disobey
وَماand ... not ذاكَthat إِلاّexcept أَنَّنِيthat I لَكَto you ناطِقٌspeaking
بِمْثِلِwith the like of الَّذِيwhat يُطْوىis folded عَلَيْهِaround it جَنانِيmy heart
And that is only because I speak to you
That’s only because for you I utter
In words that match what my heart enfolds.
The same as what my soul hides within
أَلاّah حَبَّذاhow excellent دَهْرٌa time إِلَيْكَto you أَصارَنِيbrought me
وَخَطْبٌand a calamity إِلىto جَدْوىthe bounty of يَدَيكَyour two hands دَعانِيcalled me
Ah, how welcome the time that brought me to you,
Oh how excellent if fate led me to you
And the calamity that called me to the bounty of your hands!
And a purpose to benefit from your hands guided me
لَقَدْindeed أَثْمَرَتْbore fruit أَيّامُهُits days لِيَfor me أَنْعُماًblessings
وَلَوْلاكَand but for you لَمْnot يُثْمِرْنَthey would bear fruit غَيْرَother than أَمانِيwishes
Its days have indeed borne blessings for me;
Its days have certainly borne me blessings
Without you, they would have borne nothing but wishes.
And were it not for you, it would bear no more than wishes
وَإِنِّيand indeed I لَتَقْتادُsurely leads الْمَطالِبَthe pursuits هِمَّتِيmy ambition
فَأَرْجَعُso I return مَثْنِيًّاturned إِلَيْكَtoward you عَنانِيmy reins
And indeed my ambition leads my pursuits,
I set out to seek what my ambition wants
So I return with my reins turned toward you.
Then I return, reined in, to you
وَإِنِّيand indeed I لأَرْجُوcertainly hope منْfrom عطائِكَyour bounty رُتْبَةًa rank
يُقَصِّرُfall short عَنْof إِدْراكِهاattaining it الثَّقَلانِhumankind and jinn
And indeed I hope for a rank from your bounty
And I hope to gain from your gifts a status
Which both humankind and jinn fall short of attaining.
That the two realms fall short of attaining
فَماfor ... not تَقْرُبُdraws near الدُّنْياthe world وَعَطْفُكَwhile your favor نازِحٌdistant
وَلاand not تَبْعُدُis far away النُّعْمىblessings وَجُودُكَwhile your generosity دانِnear
For the world does not draw near while your favor is distant,
Neither does the world draw near nor your kindness recede
Nor are blessings far away while your generosity is near.
Nor does favor disappear but your generosity remains close
