أَمّاas for الزَّمانُTime فَلَمْso has not يَزَلْceased يُنْحِيassail
أَبَداًever عَلَيَّupon me بِمؤْلِمِwith painful الْجُرْحِwounding
As for Time, it has never ceased to assail
The times have always dealt
me, ever, with a painful wound.
Unending wounds upon me.
فَلَئِنْyet if indeed نَوائِبُهُits calamities سَمَحْنَthey granted generously عَلَىdespite
ماwhat كانَwas مِنُْهfrom it بِماجِدٍwith a noble man سَمْحِgenerous
Yet if its calamities have granted me—despite
Yet if the times were lenient
what it has done—a noble, generous man,
Regarding what I wished they would be lenient about,
فَلأَثْنِيَنَّthen I shall surely praise عَلَىupon يَدٍa hand فَتَحَتْit opened
بابَthe door of الرَّجاءِhope إِلىto أَبِيAbu (father of) الْفَتْحِal-Fath (victory)
then I shall surely praise a hand that opened
I will praise the hand that opened
the door of hope to Abu al-Fath.
The door of hope to my father of conquest.
