ماnot طَلَعَتْrose شَمْسٌa sun مِنَfrom الْمَغْرِبِthe west
ما طَلَعَتْ شَمْسٌ مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ
قَبْلَكَbefore you فِيin أُفْقٍa horizon وَلاnor مَوْكِبِa procession
قَبْلَكَ فِي أُفْقٍ وَلا مَوْكِبِ
No sun has risen from the west
No sun has risen from the west
before you, on any horizon or in any procession.
Before you, on any horizon or procession.
وَلاnor سَمَتْsoared هِمَّةُaspiration ذِيone possessing هِمَّةٍambition
وَلا سَمَتْ هِمَّةُ ذِي هِمَّةٍ
حَتّىuntil اسْتَوَتْstood firm فِيat ذِرْوَةِthe summit of الْكَوْكَبِthe star
حَتّى اسْتَوَتْ فِي ذِرْوَةِ الْكَوْكَبِ
Nor has an ambitious soul's aspiration soared
Nor has any man of ambition aimed
so high as to stand upon a star's summit.
Until he reached the pinnacle of the stars.
هانَbecame easy الَّذِيthat which عَزَّwas difficult وَنِلْتَand you attained الَّذِيthat which
هانَ الَّذِي عَزَّ وَنِلْتَ الَّذِي
حاوَلْتَهُyou strove for it مِنْof دَرَكِattainment الْمَطْلَبِthe goal
حاوَلْتَهُ مِنْ دَرَكِ الْمَطْلَبِ
What was hard grew easy, and you attained what
He who was mighty has been humbled, and you attained
you had sought: the fulfillment of your aim.
What you sought to grasp of your noble goal.
فاسْعَدْso rejoice وَبُشْراكَand glad tidings to you بِهاof it عِزَّةًglory
فاسْعَدْ وَبُشْراكَ بِها عِزَّةً
مَتىwhenever تَرُمْyou seek صَهْوَتَهاits saddle تَرْكَبِyou ride
مَتى تَرُمْ صَهْوَتَها تَرْكَبِ
So rejoice—glad tidings to you of this glory:
So be joyous and receive the good news of glory,
whenever you seek its saddle, you mount it.
Whenever its rein you choose to mount.
مُمَلأًfilled بِالْعِزِّwith glory سامِيlofty الْعُلىexalted rank
مُمَلأً بِالْعِزِّ سامِي الْعُلى
مُهَنَّأًcongratulated بِالظَّفَرِon triumph الأَقْرَبِthe nearest
مُهَنَّأً بِالظَّفَرِ الأَقْرَبِ
Filled with glory, lofty in rank,
Filled with honor, sublimely high,
congratulated on the triumph close at hand.
Congratulations on the nearer conquest.
ماnot الْفَخْرُglory فَخْرَthe glory of الْمُلْكِkingship إِلاّexcept الَّذِيthat which
ما الْفَخْرُ فَخْرَ الْمُلْكِ إِلاّ الَّذِي
شِدْتُI built بِطِيبِthrough the nobility of الْفِعْلِdeeds وَالْمَنْصِبِand lineage
شِدْتُ بِطِيبِ الْفِعْلِ وَالْمَنْصِبِ
Glory—the glory of kingship—is only that
No pride is the pride of kingship but that
which I have built through noble deeds and lineage.
I have bound myself in good conduct and office.
فاليومso today أدركتyou attained المنىwishes غالباًvictorious
فاليوم أدركت المنى غالباً
وليسand is not غيرother than الليثthe lion بالأغلبthe mightiest
وليس غير الليث بالأغلب
So today you attained your wishes, victorious,
Today I have attained my wish, prevailing,
and none but the lion is the mightiest.
And none but the lion is the most prevailing.
فَالنَّصْرُfor victory كُلُّall النَّصْرِvictory فِيin سَيْفِكَyour sword الْthe
فَالنَّصْرُ كُلُّ النَّصْرِ فِي سَيْفِكَ الْ
باتِكِcleaving أَوْor فِيin عَزْمِكَyour resolve الْمِقْضَبِthe keen-edged
باتِكِ أَوْ فِي عَزْمِكَ الْمِقْضَبِ
For victory—all victory—lies in your sword,
So all victory is the victory of your sword,
the cleaving one, or in your keen-edged resolve;
Your firmness, or your keenest judgment.
فِيin عِزِّكَyour might الأَقْعَسِthe unassailable أَوْor هَمِّكَyour aspiration الْthe
فِي عِزِّكَ الأَقْعَسِ أَوْ هَمِّكَ الْ
أَشْرَفِnoblest أَوْor فِيin رَأْيكَyour judgment الأَنْجَبِthe most excellent
أَشْرَفِ أَوْ فِي رَأْيكَ الأَنْجَبِ
in your unassailable might, or your aspiration,
In your proudest determination, your noblest ambition,
the noblest, or in your most excellent judgment.
Or your soundest thought.
ياO كاشِفاًdispeller لِلخَطْبِof calamity ياO راشِفاًsipper
يا كاشِفاً لِلخَطْبِ يا راشِفاً
لِلْعَذْبِof sweetness مِنْfrom ثَغْرِthe mouth of الْعُلىglory الأَشْنَبِcool, white-toothed
لِلْعَذْبِ مِنْ ثَغْرِ الْعُلى الأَشْنَبِ
O dispeller of calamity, O sipper
O you who reveal tribulations, O you who quench
of sweetness from glory's cool, white-toothed mouth.
From the fresh spout of the sublime lips.
