جَرىflowed النَّهْرُthe river مِنْfrom شَوْقٍlonging إِلىtoward ماfirst fragment of ماحل: parched حِلِsecond fragment of ماحل: parched الثَّرىthe earth
وَأَجْرَيْتُand I let flow دَمْعاًtears شاقَهُstirred it to longing الْمَنْزِلُthe dwelling الْقَفْرُdesolate
The river flowed out of longing for the parched earth,
The river flowed yearning towards the resting place of the ground
And I shed tears, stirred to longing by the desolate dwelling.
And I shed a tear, burdened by the barren dwelling
فَلَوْso, if كُنْتَyou were يَوْمَon the day of الْبَيْنِparting شاهِدَa witness to عَبْرَتِيmy tears
وَعَبْرَتِهِand its tears لَمْdid not تَدْرِyou know أَيُّهُماwhich of the two النَّهْرُthe river
So had you witnessed my tears on the day of parting
If on the day of parting you had witnessed my tears
And its tears, you would not have known which of the two was the river.
And its tears, you wouldn't know which of us is the river
فَياso, O نَهْرَriver ثَوْراThawra قَدْindeed أَثَرْتَyou stirred up مِنَof الْهَوىpassion
دَفِيناًsomething buried أَجَنَّتْهُconcealed it الْجَوانِحُthe ribs وَالصَّدْرُand the breast
So, O river Thawra, you have awakened a passion
O raging river, passion has left its mark on you
That lay buried, hidden by the ribs and breast.
Swept in fervor by spirits and chests
فَلَوso, if كانَthere were لِيfor me صَبْرٌpatience كَفَفْتُI held back مَدامِعِيmy tears
وَلكِنَّbut مَنْwhoever يَشْتاقُlongs لَيْسَthere is not لَهُfor him صَبْرُpatience
So, had I patience, I would hold back my tears,
If I had patience I would hold back my tears
But whoever longs has no patience.
But one who yearns has no patience
