    فَلِلْيَوْمِ مِنْكُمْ غَيْرُ ما أَسْلَفَ الأَمْسُ

    You have departed from your pledge, O house of Kamil;

    For what comes from you today differs from what yesterday bestowed.

    The sword from you failed in my hand, though sharp,

    Just as your sun grew dark in my eyes.

    And you have left the place of your favor bereft of me,

    As though that affection and intimacy had never been.

    You planted praise, but your clouds never showered it

    With water—and can a plant grow in thirst?

    Sickly promises—whenever I say one has recovered,

    Your promise to give suffers a relapse.

    And I hold you too dear to see you turn

    To conduct that diminishes your honor.

    And you are sons of generosity, which brought smiles

    To the scowling days of a darkened age,

    Through bounty; and if you call for combat, you are the

    Horsemen—no unsteady riders there, nor weaklings.

    Why, then, does my market fail to flourish among you,

    And my praise earn from you only a paltry price?

    Does one who once gave take back his favor,

    And does one who has always clothed others strip away the robe of bounty?

    وَأَرْطَبُ إِجْمالاً وَفِي عُودِكُمْ يُبْسُ

    I show leniency, overlooking faults, while you are obstinate;

    And I grow supple out of courtesy, while your wood is dry.

    And it is not fair that I should soften while you grow harsh,

    Nor is it right that I grow tender while you grow hard.

    Peace be upon you; I have said nothing to give you misgivings,

    But it is reproach with which the soul seethes.

    وَما لِلْقَوافِي بَعْدَ إِغْضابِها حَبْسُ

    I held the rhymes in check before their master was angered;

    And rhymes, once angered, can no longer be restrained.

    If the pure-blooded Arabs do not honor a covenant,

    Then, after that, the Romans and Persians are not to blame.
