أَياO ناهِضَupholder الْمُلْكِthe kingdom أَيُّwhat الثَّناءِpraise
يَقُومُundertakes بِشُكْرِكَwith thanks to you أَوْor يَنْهَضُrises to the task
O upholder of the kingdom, what praise
O you who have assumed power, which praise
can do justice to thanking you, or rise to the task?
Could truly give you thanks or rise up,
وَمَنْand who ذاthis one يَراكَsees you فَيَدْعُوthen calls upon سِواother than
كَyou يَوْماًone day لِخَطٍْfor a line (likely a typo for 'for an ordeal') إِذاwhen يُرْمِضُit scorches
And who, seeing you, would call on anyone other
And who is there that sees you and calls
than you, one day, for a scorching ordeal [text uncertain]?
Upon another in days of distress?
وَكَيْفَand how وَلَمّاwhile not yet تَزَلْyou cease لِلنَّدىtoward generosity
مُحِباًّloving إِذاwhen كَثُرَgrew numerous المُبْغِضُthe hater
And how, when toward generosity you have always been
How could it be so when you remain
loving, even when its haters grow numerous?
Loving despite the haters abound,
فَتَعْطِفُso you turn kindly غِنْif (apparent typo) صَدَّturned away عَنْهُfrom it اللِّئامُthe ignoble
وَتُقْبِلُand you approach بِالوُدِّwith affection إِنْif أَعْرَضُواthey turned away
So you turn kindly toward it if the ignoble turn away from it,
So you show kindness though the vile
and approach it with affection if they turn away.
Turn away, and accept with affection if they shun.
دَعانِيَcalled me بِشْرُكَyour cheerfulness قَبْلَbefore النَّوالِthe gifts
وَأَثْرىand grew rich بِهِthrough it الأَمَلُhope الْمُنْفِضُimpoverished
Your cheerfulness called me before your gifts,
Your gift brought me hope before bounty
and through it impoverished hope grew rich.
And enriched the aspirations diminished,
وَأَحْرىand likeliest الحَياthe rain أَنْto يُرَوِّيwater thoroughly الثَّرىthe soil
حَياًrain باتَspent the night بارِقُهُits lightning يُومِضُflashes
And the rain most likely to soak the soil
And it beholds life to water the earth
is rain whose lightning kept flashing through the night.
With a living whose glow is unceasing.
وَأَطْعَمَنِيand fed me فِيin نَداكَyour bounty الْجَزِيلِabundant
خَلائِقُvirtues يُشْفىis healed بِهاthrough them الْمُمْرَضُthe ailing
And amid your abundant bounty I was nourished
Your plentiful gift has sustained me
by virtues through which the ailing are healed.
With creations that heal the diseased,
وَوَجْهُكَand your face وَالْفِعْلُand the deed إِذْwhen يُشْرِقانِthey both shine
كَأَنَّهُماas though they both were عِرْضُكَyour honor الأَبْيَضُwhite and unstained
And your face and your deeds, when they both shine,
Your face and your deeds radiate brightness
seem to be your honor, white and unstained.
As if they are your shining essence.
فَإِمّاso if وَهَبْتَyou bestowed فَنِعْمَthen excellent is الْوَهُوبُthe lavish giver
وَإِلاّand if not فَكَالواهِبِthen like the giver الْمُقْرِضُthe lender
So if you give, what an excellent giver you are;
Whether you have granted or withheld
and if not, the lender is like the giver.
You are the ultimate giver on loan.
